***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I've planted those Walmart bulbs and roots with good success, for years! I always "plant food to nourish our bodies, and flowers to nurture our souls." I can't remember who said that, but it is so true for us. We absolutely love flowers. They bring us joy. Here in our region, we call them pee-OH=nees!

I live in Washington State. I say PEA-a-Knee. I think the key to buying any plant from a large chain store is making my purchase right after they get their shipment. Typically, the employees are not well versed in the needs of the plants and therefore the longer stock sits on the shelf the more neglected it is.

Hi Sara, I am from Iowa and have always heard peonies pronounced the way you said you pronounce it ( pee-uh-nee). My mom and dad had many different peonies at their house and when they passed away I dug them all up and now have them at my home. Every time I see and smell those beautiful flowers blooming in my yard, I think of my mom and dad. They will always be my favorite and bring me wonderful memories.

Minnesota: Pea-a-knees. Can't wait to see how the Walmart bare root stock grow! Fun, and another good reason for planting flowers: POLLINATORS! Next year, you might want to add some more native perennials. They are healthier, take less maintenance and help support the local pollinators, who are all at risk. A website I love is Prairie Moon.

Interesting you brought up the different pronounciations of the word "peonies." My Grandma (from California) always said it like you do, but I also started hearing pee-OH-nees when I came here. My Grandma's joke was that the family dog heard it as "pee on THESE." 😉🤣 LOL 😂

Thank you for this video on planting flower bare roots and seeds. Watching you and Kevin start seeds inspired me to try two years ago. I failed then. My seedlings got leggy and did not thrive. I know why now. I am trying again this year. My tomatoes are sprouting already. I also planted petunias and marigold seeds. For years I have bought annuals as young plants. But now they are cost prohibitive. I hope I can grow them from seeds. Thank you for teaching all of us viewers how to plant things and for inspiring us!

Marigolds are easy to save the seeds: just let a few blooms completely dry out, pull seeds out and store in a labeled envelope. These seeds will last for several years. Also petunias will reseed themselves as will morning glories. Another of annuals will reseed...just cover bed with heavy pine straw if you live in in colder climates. I'm 2hrs south of Atlanta, Ga and we get ice and freezing Temps, but rarely below 10°.

Here in the bread basket of Canada we call peonies the first way. Note: if you get bored with the colour of your peony blooms you can change the colour by using dolomite lime, it’s pretty cool! I changed my white and pink peonies to dark wine ❤I’ve been buying Walmart bare root plants for many years 99% of the time they turn out great! I find the bulbs and roots are definitely smaller than greenhouse varieties but it’s a great way to go if you’re just starting out and don’t want to pay greenhouse prices. Can’t wait to see what your flower garden looks like in July.

Be careful with bagged topsoil or mulch. My SIL worked on electronics at sewage plants and they spin the "stuff" which is used in those products. If you have a cut you can get a serious infection which can lead to death. I don't use gloves either & no shoes either. Wash hands well & use alcholol afterwards.

Most I know in Indiana say pee-a-knee for peony, but I was born and grew up in the same area and all the older people of the 50s called them pie-knees. My mom, now in her 90s, and my grandparents and neighbors that age all called them pie-knees. Only when I went to college did I find out that was a local pronunciation among the locals and elders, though kids who never moved out of the area still use the same pronunciation as their parents.

Yarrow that looks like Queen Anne's lace weed flower, I loved the look of the Queen Ann's lace flower... I planted a daisy bed with cone flower, Ox-eyed and many other similar flowering daisy look flowers and only put Yarrow in a few spaces along it's curve. After only 3 years the purple cones and Oxes were the only to survive against the YARROW roots and spread. Yarrow can create a Carpet of burly growth. I mowed the large crescent Moon shaped daisy bed over and my lawn still has a burly, curly green yarrow patch that I don't allow to flower anymore.

In our Indiana family, we called them "pennies," though we knew how they were spelled. We had other relatives who pronounced the name "pineys"--long "i." As I got older, I began to pronounce the name as you do. They are one of my favorite flowers. My understanding is that the blooms cannot open without the aid of the large ants that accompany them. I need to look into that to learn if it's true, and, if so, why.

I bought some rhubarb crowns last year from Walmart and to be honest, I didn’t expect much. Boy was I wrong. Every single plant took off, survived the summer & winter and are popping up right now. I can’t wait to make strawberry rhubarb pie! 🥧 🍓 Oh and I grew up in MN and we say pea-a-knees.

East Tennessee we call them Pea-onies, a combination of Peas and pony's..lol. We southerners like to put a slang on most words...lol. Great video as always Sarah.

Native of Arkansas - It was Peōnies - Long ō. Moved to New Mexico and became friends with a transplant from Canada who pronounced it as Pee-â-nees. I thought she was just playing around with the letters the first time I heard her say it! 😂 Nope, that is really the way it was said where she grew up in Ontario! This was a great video! Love your Sprout House and Water Misting Bottle! 💛 🌸🏵️🌞🌺🌼 🩷

I like roses for special occasions. But my all time favorite flower is the daisy. They have a quiet understated elegance to me. Wildflowers are a favorite too. It just amazes me when they show up wherever. Buffalo, NY and pee uh nee.
