Many teachers don’t WANT to quit. But many of us will have to choose our health and sanity over staying. Teachers are over worked, over stressed, underpayed, undervalued and disrespected. It’s ridiculous!

Our energy and money is going toward teachers Unions, department of education garbage -they even control our local school & property taxes? They keep pounding on the taxpayers for more more - when a lot of districts have less students? Vermont is a great example - they have nearly 30% less students than they did 20 years ago, but they're demanding more teachers? This special ed rip-off has to stop - you people are crazy and abusing children telling them something's wrong with them when in fact it's not the case. You're only doing it for your own jobs.. you don't care about kids And don't you dare try saying otherwise- based on your actions? The way you vote? It's all about your profit Only now you're realizing that your profits are going into pockets of politicians and you don't like it - you already sold out. I screened children from birth - 5 years old for disabilities and delays. The public school system wants me to fail them in every test, so they can get 12 years of federal special ed funding! Your local school boards set it up so that they bring billions of dollars in through special ed funding - which leads to more food stamps, subsidized housing, special services.. you people are out of control! The leadership demanded I open case files on every child being raised by a single mom, whether divorced or not. I was given a cheat sheet on questions to find out whether mommy had any uncles visiting her at night! If I came across and abuse case where there was a male involved, they buried it. That wasn't the path of least resistance and they were going to allow that kid to take the abuse. Cuz social workers don't want to open Case files unreal investigations nor real abuse - and you work very closely with them creating fake dossiers My boss called these women "the path of least resistance" We were to expand our caseloads to get more Federal funding into our local community by telling kids something was wrong with them? And trapping that mother in the state until we got the 12 years of federal funding out of that kid! I quit, went to politicians, the media - that was in the mid-90s! Teachers have sat by and allowed the federal government to destroy their students! For YOUR profit! it's all paperwork now. There's no time to spend with kids - they're not getting enough attention at home because mothers are now demanded to send their kids to Head start, subsidized by taxpayers to go out and earn minimum wage instead of raising their families? Liberals have killed the home cottage industry. Family courts are deliberately ripping children away from their families -not demanding their father's pay child support Most of the caseloads that end up in family Court come from school districts now.. you think your gods! Why do you have social workers in public school systems? They're paid to find problems their jobs depend on it.. and they're keeping their jobs by destroying our children. I was part of it! nor by paid teachers The teachers went along with the union for decades - we were warning you that you were going to become minions for politicians and they were going to leave you behind. Just like they did African-American communities.. they have used the teacher Union voter block enough to gain the power they wanted in local communities because you drink their Kool-Aid and there's no antidote. Substitute teachers get called in in droves on election Day - especially midterm elections when schools and teachers union put the most devastating economic burdens on local communities - nobody's watching But the teachers unions make sure there are enough substitute teachers on hand so every teacher can run out and vote during the school day! You voted your way into the trash and took our children with you. You allowed your union to destroy our children's education system - they don't even get summer vacation now? I was a part of that system, I tried to warn people, parents and now you're complaining that you're underpaid and overworked? You're complaining about parents, complaining about your salaries.. but I don't see one complaint toward your fine leaders who are laughing all the way to the bank off of your sweat equity! Your union dues end up in lobbyist pockets who passed on your hard-earned pennies to politicians! Why don't you pound on them to keep their promises? Turning to the taxpayers and complaining about parents isn't going to do it now - your department of education is failing our children while they're building schools in the Middle East Using money borrowed from China You let the rats take over the cheese and now you're complaining? We saw the writing on the wall 30 years ago - but you did your duty and lined up like good little soldiers for your local politicians ... Go talk to them.

Teachers have been complaining for decades about pay, blah, blah, blah.. The fact is that the American education system has never been that good. Certainly not compared to Western Europe.. Teachers in the U.S. are paid far better than almost all countries in the world and still they complain.. The problem with students discipline in the U.S. is a reflection of all of society in the U.S. An attitude of "I deserve that" is prevalent throughout society..

27 students on my roster. I usually have 18-24. Eleven of them are kids with Special needs. I am not getting actual teaching done, because I am dealing with daily behavioral issues. I have considered quitting several times, since pandemic started. I am definitely burned out, and I have been looking for another job. I just love working with kids. I can't see myself doing a desk job, either. A desk job would be a lot less stress, but I would hate it. I don't want to quit, either, but the burnout is serious. The endless paperwork is never looked at by the district, but it takes me hours to complete for each child. It is a waste of my time.

I lasted only four months before I resigned. You wouldn't believe how students are addressing adults today. It's outrageous. Children aren't being raised. How do you expect us to teach them when they're this unruly? You can't possibly get any instruction done. All day long you're disciplining, even with established classroom management. If you do something about that, then that alone for many teachers, who don't become educators for the money, would compensate for the lousy pay. Then, principals need to quit coming into classrooms needing to do an excessive number of evaluations. I don't need you spying on me. I've been qualified to teach the class already. What employee, in any other profession, gets evaluated four or five times a year because they're new? I can understand having to do one evaluation in the beginning and one at the end of the school year, but not FOUR! Am I being interviewed for the job all over again? What are you doing? You're micromanaging. That's what you're doing. Moreover, get some of these issues with parents under control. Some are running the schools for God's sake. Oh, and by the way, why am I spending hundreds of dollars (of my own money) on kids who don't even belong to me? What company hires people, then tells them that they must purchase their own work supplies to do their job? It's unprofessional. Finally, schools of education must do a far better job at preparing preservice educators for the realities of teaching. I simply wasn't prepared for everything teachers are responsible for doing. Not even my student internships prepared me as well as they should have. Had I known, I wouldn't have become a teacher. Tell teachers the TRUTH. Teachers need PRACTICAL information they can actually use in their classrooms, especially classrooms in high-needs areas. Why aren't schools of education preparing teachers for children living in high-needs areas? They have so many issues and needs. I always imagined myself teaching kids in a beautiful newer school, with well-parented kids, raising their hand, in an organized, well-stocked classroom. That's a fantasy. Reality is NOTHING like that. Reality is a run-down sweatshop in a basement school with 40 kids, absentee parents, one textbook, and a principal barely keeping the school together. These are schools where most teachers end up, especially new and naïve teachers who aren't yet eligible for transfer. The "fantasy" schools in affluent suburbs never have any openings and they're super picky about who they hire, because they can afford to be. There are no shortages at the most desirable schools.

@TheFoolintherainn
@TheFoolintherainn 2 жыл бұрын
Now if you said that parents were the backbone of society, they might feel valued.. but they're in a system that doesn't want parents parenting. All your child has to do is walk into school and say - "I don't feel safe at home" - which they're taught to say in health class... Then suddenly there are Case files open, social workers coming in, Court hearings, and they don't demand child support out of Fathers - they prefer women on welfare. If there is child support, they keep it just below the poverty level I did this for a living - I tried to warn you people in the 90s The department of education and teachers union is in the business of destroying families. There is no financial incentive whatsoever for reuniting families in this country States get up to a quarter million dollars per year per child they take custody, and then they get paid more when they adopt babies out Do some homework - this goes much deeper than kids behaving badly or throwing crayons

Whether they have disabilities, are difficult to keep attention at the board and work, or are having a hard time at home! They have somebody waiting for them to have a talk whenever they need one. Having to walk away from that family because you need to help your own is probably the hardest thing a teacher is having to do during these times! The educational system has become a joke, mainly due to upper management. Instead of letting teachers teach, they force them to follow the ridiculous Common Core State Standards Initiative. I'm 48 and have been going to school most of my life. I love learning and I love interacting with people, but I have seen the decline in the quality of education over the years. Now you have adjunct teachers, who have very little experience teaching or knowledge of industry standards in any number of professions. Colleges are just an extension of High School and in fact, many High School students are jumping right into College which is also lowering academic standards for continuing educational students. No one can really afford to attend Universities and I can't speak for how a University is run because I could never afford it. It simply isn't worth going into debt over if the quality of education you are receiving is anything like High School College. You can get a decent education via the University of KZfaq (completely free) or pay into online Master Classes,(which is still cheaper than College/University. The entire system needs an overhaul, the same can be said for the medical industry, food industry and prison system. The story is much bigger than news agencies are willing to dive into, but no surprise since they are bought and paid for by big corporations.

I don't mean any disrespect to the teachers involved because I know first-hand that teaching is an extremely emotionally taxing job, but the 160,000 "underqualified" teachers doesn't really bother me that much because what I have seen is on average the underqualifed teachers are often more qualified than the actually qualified teachers, or they are about the same level of qualification. There may be programs that are exceptions, but on average a teaching degree really does very little to prepare teachers to actually be good at their jobs. To put this in perspective, a teacher who intended to teach English who got an education degree and then was hired to teach Math because there are more Math teacher vacancies than English teacher vacancies is considered fully qualified to teach even if they have taken almost no Math and barely passed the Math classes they did take. A teacher who double-majored in Math and Physics but who has no teaching degree is considered "underqualified." But I would prefer to study under the "underqualified" teacher in this scenario pretty much every time.
@hollybigelow5337
@hollybigelow5337 2 жыл бұрын
Also, keep in mind that the 20% lower pay on average stat isn't the whole story. In most states teachers may start lower, but at least in the past pay also increases faster per year than most professions. So teachers just starting out will struggle, but they may get paid back for that sacrifice towards the end of their careers. Also, they tend to get better benefits than the average college graduate. And they have better job security than the average job graduate. Don't get me wrong, even with all of those benefits it's still not a job I would want to do. And notice that I didn't mention the fact that teachers officially on teach around 6-7 hours per day on average or get summers off because I know that teachers work way more than official teaching hours preparing lessons, grading homework, going to meetings, dealing with parents, etc. The average employee works 2,088 paid hours in a typical year. It's not really fair to compare total compensation between college graduates because an Accountant or Lawyer may be expected to work closer to 4,000 hours their first couple of years to prove themselves, while someone with a Music degree may only work 1,000 hours as they try to attract loyal students in their new profession. The average teacher probably only teachers for a total of 1,080. A High School teacher may spend much more time grading homework than a Kindergarten teacher. But let's pretend the average teacher spends 1,600 per year doing the job with more of those hours clustered when school is in session. That just isn't comparable in any way to an Accountant that works 4,000 not for the money, but to prove to the partners that they deserve to not be fired. On one hand, one hour of work teaching school is probably psychologically equal for most people to 1.5 hours in any other normal job. So the teacher psychologically may have worked 2,400 hours compared to the average worker. Or if we assume one school teaching hour is the same as 2 hours, it might be the same as 3,200 hours. But once the Accountant goes over 16 hours per day you have to start taking into account sleep deprivation, which may make those hours also harder than average. Or a Doctor may make more just out of college, but that student's degree also cost twice as much to get, so really the student has to spend all of that extra money paying off extra student loans. Teachers may stay up at night worrying about students who have no support at home, but Doctors may stay up at night worrying about patients that may not make it through the night that have young children at home. In isolation, comparing first year total pay without taking into account a ton of other factors, especially if you don't even consider total hours worked per year is irresponsible.

@hollybigelow5337
@hollybigelow5337 Жыл бұрын
@@gasparma2316 I can completely relate. My experience as a substitute teacher was extremely rough and very low paid. The reason I use the Physics/Math degree example was because of my Dad. He taught High School Physics for a bit. He wanted to do science labs. His lab budget for the entire year for all students was $80. Of course, he also was taking a pretty big pay cut to do the job and was supporting a family, so supplementing that budget out of his own pocket wasn’t an option that first year. He wanted a class graphing calculator, but that just wasn’t in the budget. At the time, even one graphing calculator cost more than $80. Ultimately, I remember he really thought outside of the box and designed a Physics experiment using tape and used his $80 budget to buy enough tape for all of his 180ish students to be able to do a lab. I think he also designed a couple of demonstrations from supplies he already had from his previous job. The sad thing was this was at a school that genuinely valued his subject and contributions. The $80 annual lab fee for 180 students was considered generous and was more than most Physics teachers got in the state. If he had taught longer he did plan to start using raises to fund his classroom experiments, but as I said, there’s no way he could do that in Year 1. In order for High School Science to be effective it absolutely needs to include labs. That may not be true for Math or English or Social Studies, but it is absolutely true for Science. It may not need to be a ton. It may not even need to be money. If the teacher inherits lab supplies from another teacher or the lab supplies themselves are donated that would be enough. But I certainly would agree that only giving a Science teacher enough of a budget that they can spend a little over 20 cents per student for the whole year is not setting up the teacher for success. And while regular teachers are not usually set up for success, that goes double for substitute teachers. You get paid almost nothing for the day and have no benefits and also no reliable number of jobs, and yet there are other ways they sabotage you. For example, the worst school I ever substituted at had a policy that they didn’t trust subs with a key to their classroom, so you had to wait for the janitor to let you in. They also had a policy that they wouldn’t start letting subs sign in until 20 minutes before school. I had been trained to show up way earlier than that, so I would just stand there for over a half hour staring at the person who was supposed to sign me in. Sometimes the janitor would even stop by and say hello (I substituted there many times). The only thing getting there early did was it put me first in line. I even remember another sub came early to tell the school she had accidentally taken a job she couldn’t do and needed to cancel so they could find another sub, and the school refused to talk to her until 20 minutes before. I knew the sub well. She was one of the most reliable subs in the district. Anyway, the point is it was a huge High School with only one janitor, so starting 20 minutes before they would escort the subs one at a time to their rooms to unlock the door. And they didn’t move with any urgency. If you were the 3rd sub in line or later you were guaranteed to be let in your classroom after class starts. Of course, at that point they would chew you out for being irresponsible and late. And, of course, it can easily take 20 minutes or more just to find the teacher’s instructions for the day and reas them and understand them. Plus, a handful of students will start showing up 15 minutes before class, and they will also start asking questions such as “Can we sit wherever we want?” and even potentially will start tearing the room apart if you don’t keep an eye on them, so the idea that you can properly pay attention to reading the teacher’s instructions is ridiculous. You absolutely need to show up at least 30-45 minutes early so you can read through the instructions twice, walk around the room to get a sense of what’s in the areas you can’t see well and where any important technology is located and figure out how it works, and read through the roles and any seating charts so you know names. Knowing names and keeping the room clean and organized is often the difference between being able to keep a class relatively in order and having chaos. That and making sure you are a stickler for the rules in the first 15 minutes of every period. If you let people go to the bathroom (other than a clear emergency), run to their locker for ANY reason, or sit where they want to in the first 15 minutes you will fight the class tooth and nail the rest of the day/period. But if you lay down the law and fight even the tiniest of battles for the first 15 minutes, for some reason you can be extremely permissive after that. But laying down the law means knowing names and knowing the layout of the room like the back of your hand. Anyway, that is my extremely long-winded way of saying I absolutely agree with you that many, many schools do not set up their teachers for success, and that goes double for substitute teachers. And while I didn’t touch on principal discrimination, I absolutely agree that that is also a real problem, too.

If you raise the minimum age of school to age 7 yrs or second grade ; which ever comes first. That would take of your teacher shortage. In recent years many school districts have lowered the minimum age for school to age 4 or 5 years old. Boost the minimum age and problem solved.

Um…that doesn’t solve anything. Teachers are certified for different levels. You would be cutting early childhood teachers, but those teachers won’t necessarily move to teach upper grades.

I bet if we didn’t have such a huge budget set aside for museum renovations in the Middle East and other stupid projects, the government can pay teachers as much as we can pay our engineers and plumbers.

What pains me the most as a teacher of twenty four years, is the fact in all that time, under every curriculum change and new educational directive not once have I been asked, what are your opinions on solving the situation? Up to the Election Day itself we will hear from a slew of opinionated experts chiming in. Remember to listen to the people in the trenches.
