Thank you! I graduated in 93 and The Breeders was my favorite band in high school. As soon as I heard Wet Leg my first thought was holy crap, 90’s inspired alt rock is back, they sound like The Breeders! I’ve been listening to this album daily since. They are opening for Harry Styles in Australia and New Zealand which makes me excited for his fans that are being introduced to this sound.

Wet Leg's name comes from the idea that when British mainlanders crossed over to the Isle of Wight (where the band hails) they would be called "wetleggers".

That’s what they jokingly claimed in an interview! I grew up on the Isle of Wight and Islanders do have their own words for stuff, but ‘wetleg’ is not one of them. Mainlanders are actually called ‘oveners’, as in ‘from over the water’…

@@Colgan1 I've no idea what they inspire in people. I guess the music industry is like a shark -it needs to keep swimming or it drowns. They have to keep putting music out to generate money -even if there's not any decent music to put out. Wet Leg are utter rubbish. They contain nothing of substance. Glad you enjoyed and shared some of my impressions, too. I'd seen a few people whose opinions I respect not giving it the credit it deserves and others still that say it's overrated or just a pastiche of something and I was beginning to doubt myself for a second. I also got heavy '90s vibes, nothing specific and without heavy nostalgic yearning, just something lingering there in the sound that nods towards stuff that I heard and forgot about when I was a kid. Very good, and I think probably more so if, like me, you missed some of the apparent hype that was surrounding them for a good while before its release. Nice one.

Interesting insights. The one element about them I think you largely overlooked is just how much fun they are. In the videos or watching live performances, they just look like they're having a great time, as are their audiences. How many bands can you say that about? I get the sense that the success they're having is beyond their wildest dreams and they're just gonna ride it as long and as far as they can. We often have a tendency to overthink things, music being no exception, I suppose that's your job to some extent, nevertheless... The band is very solid - bass and drums driving most of the songs, I love their rather simplistic guitar and vocals and the way the girls play off of each other is very refreshing, the bond and trust between them is probably the thing that makes them work the most.

Late to the party here, but the new album still hasn't been released, so . . . One of the great stories about Wet Leg is how the two ladies wrote their songs much like Lennon and McCartney did in their early days--together at one of their homes in a very stripped down style. If a song works with just guitar and vocals, then it's got a solid foundation. That being said, Wet Leg said they were going to write more as a full band, so we'll see if the songs have the same impact. Even though their songs so far are filled with quirkiness, they do keep an eye on life in the modern world. I hope that focus matures as they themselves do. Another positive about them is they obviously have a tonne of influences and they're not trying to fill just one genre. They look like Heart and they play like Green Day--with dashes of The Cranberries, The Violent Femmes, and . . .

When you ask whether there are any other female bands 'based on friendship', it reminds me of a band I've been listening to obsessively at university: The Ophelias. Aside from just being a super distinctive band with detailed lyrics and unusual arrangements and these almost- whispered vocals (and even an unexpected violinist), I just get the vibe from their music videos and instagram posts that they are all genuinely close friends with characterful personalities just larking around and supporting each other. Me likes dat.

I do enjoy this album very much and I know these girls are going far. BUT!!!: Just to answer the question that the video title poses: NO! It is being saved mostly by a COLLABERATIVE EFFORT among TONS of EPIC women in Rock n Roll today! Not all of them but a great many of them are part of the burgeoning UK music scene, much of which is underground. Just to name some of my favorites besides Rhian and Hester in this rush of new (and not *SO* new) female talent: Mille and Mie Debray (The SoapGirls. You MUST check them out!), Camille Alexander and Marie Niemiec (A Void: an eclectic power trio and nightmare of sound engineers! lol), Becca Macintyre (Marmozets), Lauren Tate & Becky Baldwin (Hands Off Gretel -- Lauren also in Delilah Bon and Becky also in Fury), Nina Courson (Healthy Junkies), Amy Love and Georgia South (Nova Twins), Kelli Mayo & Peyton Bighorse (Skating Polly), Tanzy Velayne (Midwich Cuckoos), Emily Alice (Alice's Ants), Marisa Rodriguez (Marisa and the Moths), from OZ Amy Taylor (Amyl and the Sniffers), The Four Elliot Sisters: Alison, Anna, Amy and Abby (Maid of Ace), and of course Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Reckless)... and God knows I can certainly find more! I do keep finding more! Seriously these chix ALL RAWK!

Just to be clear, Amyl and the Sniffers are the only Oz band mentioned, The Pretty Reckless and Skating Polly are the two US bands. The SoapGirls are from South Africa but are a big part of the UK and EU scenes and the rest are UK bands (though the members of A Void are from France).

You should really check out car seat headrest. They're an indie rock band that I think has really struck a cord with recent generations due to their ability to capture the teenage and young adult experience. The lead singers lyrics are akin to someone reading their personal journal. They also have songs that go on for 10-13 minutes that manage to not drag out through a constant shift in the music and an ability to maintain the listeners attention through the story the songs tell. I think they're proof rock really isn't dead at all. I'd recommend checking out either their album twin fantasy (face to face) or Teens of denial.

i love Wet Leg and they might save rock b/c they are really popular but they are not the only ones making music like this. what Poppy is doing is pretty damn cool and there are young bands like Wednesday, Momma, Ex Void to name a couple that have elements of the 90s sound that redefined music. I do want to stress that that music never went anywhere it just was not on radio and MTV all the time. there are tons of shoegaze bands from the 2000's 10s and 20s. same for punk rock, grunge, industrial and other music genres.

F yeah. Nice personal review. To 99 luftbaloons of now. Needed humor. Really cool to hear rock now like its 81. Kim n Kelly n b52s had two women partners. Kelly's stuff is super cool too. All the breeders n solo stuff I love. One long song

These girls and the fellas have the 't' word TALENT. Drums and vocals are always the measure nay at times stumbling block for me to start listening to a band. Drumming is good to John Bonham great, vocal is per this reviewer at times generic (hey it is a genre) to transcendantly good. Hard work, song craft, attitude (or maybe outlook's a better word) brilliant.

Hey Professer Skye, a soft boy (boi) is a guy who is less masculine ( masculine as in the traditional outdated use of the term). A soft boi is someone who comes off as sensitive and not your typical "manly man". Sometimes , soft boys are bisexual or pansexual but they can also be completely straight and/or cisgender

Old git here.....blown away on first hearing of chaise long...Thought my god, rocks back! For first time in 25 years.BUT,and I don't mean to be a Casandra.....I think it might all ware thin very quickly and time will forget.Could be wrong but I don't think this digital age will create much longevity for anyone after their 15mins.Also the persistent swearing strikes me as a cheap shot which good double entoundre shouldn't require. My children(and many parents) won't be listening which could limit their popularity demograph....of course you youngsters may consider otherwise. Was ever thus

I like wet leg but saviours? that's a stretch. There's plenty bands before them. Royal blood and wolf Alice just to name a couple newer groups. I like one called Summer Cannibals who play pretty kick ass and have couple front woman on guitars. Rock doesn't really need a saviour, plenty people still playing it regardless of whether they make it onto the radio or not

I don't get the obsession over this group, a local band from my city opened for them and my first thought after looking them up was "how on earth do they have a following".

Heard them, not bad, a bit of an overproduced sound for me. Don't reach higher enough heights for me to buy the LP though.
