17yrs ago I started a worm composter in my kitchen. I used the castings on organic veggies and medicinal plants. I also fed some of the red wiggler worms to my pet largemouth and smallmouth bass in my 125gallon aquarium. I fed the worms coffee grounds, veggie scraps, and even hair clippings. Potato scraps would sometimes start growing in the compost. The coffee grounds did seem to make the worms more active, but you got to be careful to not add too much moisture or you can get small gnats like fruit flies. I would dry out my coffee grounds for a day or two before adding them for that reason. I believe that Wiggle Worm brand you showed in this video is a Wisconsin based company. I started using their castings over two decades ago. It is very good stuff, and it was always priced better than competitors. Edited to add: At the end of the video you said castings are not compost, but they are often referred to as "Vermicompost". Somewhere I have a book on the stuff. Have you ever looked into "Aerated Compost Tea"? In my opinion that is the best use for worm castings. I used to deliver pizzas to a lawn guy that had a couple homemade 50gallon brewers in his garage. I used to have a 5gallon homemade brewer. Mr Tim J Wilson(channel name mrtimjwilson) here on youtube nerds out on Aerated Compost teas. He invented the Microbulater airlift brewer

Hey Frat, thanks for being a cool local fan! I got them from a guy who unfortunately went out of business. There is a guy in Tonawanda called Buffalo worm works. His name is Myles. There’s another guy in Akron but he doesn’t answer the phone. Here is a link to some on Amazon. These work well if you briefly let them dry out and then spread them. They take about 2-3 weeks to kick in. Put them down before some heavy rain and you’re good to go! When and exactly how many times would you apply worm castings to your lawn? I've learned a lot from your channel. Thanks!
@GarageGear
@GarageGear 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan, first off thanks for being a fan of the channel! This is a really great fertilizer! I’m very tempted to try an entire season of this to see what it does! Typically I fertilize my lawn once in early April, once in mid May, then around the 4th of July, then in Early September, and finally in late October. Based on my soil test, my lawn can really benefit from this stuff! I’m going to attempt to throw this down in the early spring and see how the lawn is doing come May. If I see that it needs another does I’ll give it a dose in mid May. Then I’ll use it again in the summer, and once in the fall to see how it does. I could also try half doses mid May and in October. I like to experiment with this kind of stuff and see how the lawn responds. My lawn fertilizing program works great but these worm castings are far more organic and cost way less. Thanks David! You may have just inspired me to make another video! 👍

@GarageGear
@GarageGear 11 ай бұрын
I’m glad you had success with using the worm castings. You could lay them out on a tarp let them dry out a bit, and then put them in your spreader. Others have, before that they’ve tried that and that has worked. They changed the formulation since I’ve made this video. This makes them harder to spread now.

I hired a company to help me get it back into shape. We killed it all off and any day now they are coming out to aerate, fertilize and seed. Would you recommend putting down the castings now or wait until the new grass starts to come in or even wait until next year?

It doesn't take much to have a great looking lawn, it's just like rough on a golf course, we maintain that the least out of any Turf, basically I'm saying anyone can do it but growing anything shorter than a fairway height is much harder to do. There is one golf course that's a complete science project where everything is organic, no chemicals no nothing and for the most part it works pretty good but when it goes bad it goes really bad
