Due to my HF sensitivities, I'm all about getting my room as quiet as possible. I've changed the cables on my high-performance 9 Channel setup multiple times, and I just like to say.. the better the shielding the quieter the room. Btw one is unlikely to hear the benefit of a shielded power cable if one hasn't addressed the cables of length first. Unshielded cables can act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna! Explains why when I use the disconnect my Heights and surrounds, within 10 minutes, the noise floor used to come down.

I use XLR cables cause they are there, not that I noticed a difference in my system. And I say don't go crazy on the money for XLR cables. $30 or under for an XLR is more than enough!

@@HTtimperry xlr cables are for long runs. i don't know if 15 feet is considered long. you would probably hear the difference if they were lets say 50 feet

Balanced cables have nothing to do with noisy power. It simply filters out interference picked up by the cable acting like an antenna picking up wifi, mobile phones,radio ect. This is especially important on long cables.

A direct drop from your house electrical panel to your audio gear is the best thing anyone can do. XLR cables are convenient for long runs, I have used both in my systems. Are XLR better, doubtful from my experience for Home audio or theater.

XLR's are (usually) more flexible, come in longer lengths, have better locking connectors and coil nice and you can get tour grade professional cables with genuine Neutrik connectors for about a buck a foot. For running longer lengths I would use them for the above reasons alone.

Nice timing Guys, i just changed my rca to xlr cables from my marantz prepro to my amplifiers. Just took simpel metal plugs xlr cables. In my dedicated basement home theater i heard the music and details in movies a little bit more clear. Like there is cleaner signal. Now i am going to change the height rca cables to xlr's. Oh btw you will get a 3db gain.

Using better RCA cables and having a really good surge protector/power conditioner can help limit noise & distortion

I ran a power conditioner and tried many RCA cables. It didn't make a difference in my case.

Most power conditioners are nothing more than glorified surge protectors. If ones power conditioner/bar has independent output sockets, noise contamination can be reduced. However, this will only become apparent if one has already addressed the noisiest cables first (i;e unshielded RCA's / speaker cables). Hence, "it didn't make a difference"

Maybe a smarter smart switch too, like it is for me. I use them to turn my devices on in a certain order. I didn't buy them, so I had no prior expectations that they would do anything to solve noise issues. I have one in my studio where a USB docking station was causing noise in my system. The power conditioner did nothing to alleviate the noise. You know what did? Connecting the dock to a 3-prong smart switch? I don't know if it's acting as a ground lifter, but it stopped the noise.@@totalplonker824

Chana knows his Marantz processors. XLR(s) have a lock and amplifiers should have XLR female clamp lock. I won't by an amplifier if they don't include the XLR female clamp lock. Has nothing to do with cost. Receivers can't drive all channels at high volume and not distort or sound muted and distorted during dynamic playback. The industry not getting us back into more affordable multichannel processors is ridiculous.
