The live discussion talked about people coming to the Lido in PJs for breakfast. I like the idea of getting up and get going. Don't want to miss moment of the excursions and all the fun around this ship. The cruising Canucks are great role models of getting up, getting dressed, and making the most of the day!

I like dressing up for dinner & lament the casualness these days at weddings, funerals etc. I don't take long dresses any more. I did see a man in Bermuda shorts be refused entry to a NCL MDR & he said his shorts cost over $100 but was still denied entry.

Just got off a three week voyage on Queen Mary 2. Most nights were smart attire, buttoned down shirts and long pants were required. On gala nights it was jacket and tie. We saw several men turned away.

I'm a snob. I do not go black tie but I wear a dress/nice slacks with a silk top for dinner. Cocktail for formal. If you don't want to put in the effort, that is what the buffet is for. My perspective, I've spent a lot and achieved a lot to go on vacation. It's a nice time. Dress the part or go camping.

Very true on that this is a hot topic right now. We're neither slobs or snobs. If we're going to the MDR, I'm wearing a dress and my husband will put on nice pants and a collared shirt. We go for clothes that don't wrinkle easily, so no big thing there.

Watching on the catch-up. I think the world has gone much more casual these days. Luggage fees are expensive and sadly luggage frequently gets lost. I'd rather go smart casual and spend my money on adventures (in ports or on tours) instead of luggage fees. We do dress formal when on ships that have formal nights but I LOVED Azamara's always smart casual.

I love to dress up in the evenings. Hubby wears dark jeans and collared shirts most nights and chinos, jacket and tie on formal (we do fly cruise mostly so that can be tricky to fit everything in - particularly dress shoes!) Love to see Military dress uniforms and fully Kilted Scots too.

Great video. We also like to dress up and look put together on cruises, I remember back in the day I even brought an evening gown. My frustration with the cruise lines is if they have a dress code, they shouldn’t enforce it. I like Jill’s suggestion of maybe having one dining room that’s a little bit more casual. About a year ago we were on HAL and we did see somebody turned away from the main dining room with shorts on however, this is not always the case.

My husband put in his two cents towards the end of the stream.. We started cruising in 2018 and he packed a suit and tie back then. He said he hated it and that's why he still shys away from the main dining room. Now he can wear his khakis and comfortable shoes with a collared shirt and it's much better. One of his brothers and his wife are going on a cruise in January for their first time and we told them to pack what they would normally wear and church clothes for formal nights. Made sense to them at least 😊.

I think we differ hugely on this. I would never ask another fella what they are wearing on any given night. I frankly don't care what others wear. I don't try and influence what my wife chooses to wear either. That's entirely up to her. Similarly I wouldn't expect her and she doesn't, tell me what to wear. I don't dress up on cruises. It's too much hassle taking suits so i don't. I don't wear scruffy clothes though in the dining room. But who decides what dressing up is? Each to their own is my motto. And I have seen some strange sights involving some unsightly people in tuxedos. Give me decent jeans and polo shirt any day.
@CruisingCanucks
@CruisingCanucks Ай бұрын
We feel the dressing up would be something that one doesn’t wear in their everyday life. Jill for example will wear a casual dress going shopping or visiting friends but the dresses that she wears on formal night have only been worn for special occasions such as weddings of special parties.

@@CruisingCanucks got to be honest here, I wouldnt know the difference between a casual dress or a formal dress. I know the difference between a suit and tie, and jeans and polo shirt. And I know which is the most comfortable. You see, I only associate suits and ties with job interviews and funerals. I want to comfortable on holiday, not reminded of my uncle alberts funeral.

My wife and I love to dress up on formal nights. It takes very little extra effort, and makes us feel good. We also appreciate others that make the effort to dress well. Cruise lines need to enforce the formal night dress code. It's a tradition that needs to be upheld. They enforce many other rules, so why not this one. There are many other wonderful dining options available on formal nights, so if someone does not want to dress up, go eat there. When we started cruising in 1998, I was much like Jerry, dressing up was not my thing. My wife on the other hand, loves to dress nicely. Guess who got a new formal wardrobe before our first cruise 26 years ago... I haven't looked back since.

I'm pretty laid back but tank top and basket ball shorts for dinner in the main dining nope. I go for "what would I wear to church if I went to church" I've seen people in video's who have done Cunard, don't wear "suits" just a button down and nice pants. Folks don't get "dressed" anymore like in the past. I mean, when was the last time someone wore gloves to "formal" weddings? I was the one who would wear gloves when not even my mom, aunts, cousins etc for the same thing looked at me like I was crazy. Last wedding I went to it was a "summer casual" As for baseball hats, military folks wear theirs as well as cancer patients. People get upset when folks where their service dress uniforms, they say it doesn't belong on a cruise. You can't please everyone. When I'm asked what to wear for formal nights "what would you wear if you were going to a church for a wedding, funeral etc" that's what you wear. They've never had an issue and a lot of my friends don't normally go to churches.

I think everyone should be able to wear what they want as long as they look nice. Meaning no swim suits and no tank tops. I also don’t want to see hairy arm pits Lol! I think collared shirts and dress shorts are ok. Someone else mentioned the baggage fees are expensive on certain airlines so I just bring a few pairs of black pants and various blouses and maybe a sundress. I hate to overpack. And my husband would be miserable in a suit if we were in a tropical location. But again people can still look presentable and not have to bring a ton of formal clothes.

Surely to take this to its limit, people who are grossly overweight or a bit smelly, should be turned away too? The arent becoming more "lax" they are becoming more relaxed. And as we are on vacation, surely thats not a bad thing? And there is a couple of levels between formal and scruffy, which you apepar to be advocating here. Also, why does a man need to have movements constricted by having to wear a tie/ bow tie round his neck, which is clearly uncomfortable. Maybe we are different these days in the UK, but nobody even wears suits in offoices any more. And when folk do, they rarely wear a tie. I didnt even wear a suit for my last interview. You can clearly see this is a topic that irks me. Brilliant video though lol
