John I think the issue is that many people are looking for a shortcut, and the internet has gotten good at packaging "shortcuts" and calling them products. Mastery at archery like many things is a process of many years. Most people just dont want to devote years to a journey when so many experts are promising instant success with hacks. Your arrow can be spine aligned, with perfect FOC, and the most expensive componenets on the market but if you're not putting time in on the range everyday practicing a smooth consistent release you're still going to suck. It always amazes me how a factory fletched off the shelf quality arrow can still group as tight as my custom setups when I take the time to center my pin, pull through, and follow through each time.

As always I love your thinking. It’s very logical and practical. To answer your question, I always believe practice makes perfect. I got my bow stolen last week. So when my new bow arrives, I plan on shooting 100 arrows 3-4 times a week.

Awesome! I started 3D shooting in 2020 with my brother in law. The first day of 3D archery league, I realized I wasn't ready. I think I lost 3 arrows that day. I spent some money on better equipment and started listening to the nock on series. Every night after work, I would go to the local outdoor bow club and work on what I just heard you tell me. Built a very good foundation. I had some kids and work more than I should, so I haven't been practicing as much as I should. I decided to do a weekend local shoot a few weeks ago. I hit a target that was about 4" in diameter at 67 yards. Then fast forward to this last Thursday 7/27/2023 I didn't shoot as well as I wanted. I felt like I was high and sometimes left. I know it was me. Time to build the foundation again.

I've been sticking to the rivers and lakes that I'm used too... oh wait that's waterfalls not ghosts LOL. As a newerish archer, I love these videos as they help me/ remind me what a waste some things are that I don't need to worry about. Thanks!

I'm relatively new to archery and having a bow..the bow I have is at max 40 lbs..I'm hoping to upgrade soon....I have learned fundamentals on the bow but by far I think my greatest asset has been from the help and knowledge of your videos....thanks for sharing!! So far the journey has been something of good therapy to me..

I love the tinkering side of archery. That being said with time limits I have with my work I’m having to put all my unnecessary tinkering to the side. Only tinkering I do is getting my draw length as close as possible and making sure my timing stays while doing so. Come winter I’ll tinker when work slows down. Till then it’s shoot as much as possible with my target setup and get my hunting setup put together before September 2nd

Last week I switched from standard diameter to .204 arrows. When we paper tuned at the shop, I was amazed that the .204 shot bullet holes with no adjustment needed. So I then adjusted the weight on my standard diameter arrows so the overall weight was the same as the .204. I shot both the standards and the .204s together and was amazed that they group together just fine. The FOC is different and diameter is different, yet they group tight together and both paper tune with no adjustments.

Really glad we got to catch up at Utah TAC John. Content is on fire for sure!

Mr. John Dudley is so right.But at the same time we still, especially for beginners, have to learn how to tune our bows to the best of our ability.But I get the message don't get loss down the rabbit hole and focus on shooting fundamentals!

Thanks John for the information. I got out of bow hunting because of the job i was at for a few years. Then after i got a different job i was able to get back into it and had some problems with form and i wanted to get better because i owed it to the animals. Started off with your school of nock and slowly became better. I sent you guys an email several years ago of myself and my son with my biggest buck to date then to say thank you for all your help and what you do for the archery community. Food for thought and i know you have always worked with Easton but maybe try it with some other arrow manufacturers so show that it can also be done with them as well. Keep up the great work. Always Practice , if i got time i tinker . but prac before anything. Shot this morning for 3 hours. once it cools off ill go back to shooting 4 - 5 days a week .

That's true! If you can't shoot a group and practice it doesn't pertain to you. Everything else is irrelevant because you have no idea what you or your equipment is doing in the first place. Don't wait until the week before season and shoot your bow, practice all year!!🎯

Awesome arrows man. The first time I shot them, my group was hella tight. Just a little to the right though (probably my grip) I’ve been shooting a compound bow for a week now.

(Thoughts in my head right now) A stiffer spine will straighten quicker and therefore a higher helical will steady that big ass 2 blade better. Shooting field points, you should be able to shoot bare shaft in good groups. (Trust me I play a doctor on TV)

Also, whats your opinion on eye dominance? How should a right handed, left eye dominant person be shooting? Should they use their left eye to aim, ultimately shooting left handed? Or use the less dominant eye and shoot right handed?

Every day I shoot 4 arrows, one of them is anfletched up to 30 m, achieving exactly the same flight.This is a very accurate method of adjusting the bow and every day you have to make adjustments depending on the shooting technique for this day, which changes a little it is not clear why you may need to get out of bed in the morning with the right foot or with the left and the shooting technique will be a little different.That's the ghost I'm chasing.

Ive said it time and time again, mainly about the left and right fletch, no person is good enough to notice a difference if there is any. Once you introduce human error into it, just shoot your bow, have fun doing it as well, dont let it become a chore so to speak or let it frustate you. Just my opinion

When bowharvesting is the priority, I think “grouping” is not the priority. One shot practicing is…. over and over and over.

I love the demystifying all the BS about arrows and FOC and buy this buy that to shoot better.... Placebo effect does NOT make you hit the 10 or kill a deer or elk! Shoot what you have, bow will shoot the same, arrows will fly the same, where they land is on the shooter.... Ty DUD for being true and honest and such a great teacher instructor and true archer..

John, silly but timely question for you: when it comes to practicing for the up coming hunting season, do you spend equal time shooting field tips and broadheads (assuming the arrow grain weights are the same) or do you suggest a different approach? Always happy to use your wisdom!

Lol so you’re telling me if I get a .001 straightness arrow that is clocked,spined aligned with 3 degree helical and 18 percent foc I won’t see much difference compared to a .006 factory fletched 12 percent with offset vanes??? I love this !! And I’ve been saying this stuff to my friends and archery shop for a long time… however could you clarify what you where saying with the fixed blade Broadheads?? Cuz I don’t care about fletching offsets or helical or even number of fletches… arrow straightness isn’t even an issue…….Until I put on a fixed blade then I do think a lot of those things matter. What do you think is most important for a arrow with a Broadhead ?

Just playing devil’s advocate here… the two 3-degree helicals are touching vs the 1.5-degree offsets are 4” apart. Is one more consistent?

So let me ask what if I shoot better groups with an index verse a hinge or thumb. Do u believe that the release depends more on the group? Like a high end index with adjustable travel and tension? I think this kind of video has been needed for a long time. There is nothing better than practicing everyday. All of this talking about helical, off set, foc, bla bla bla is nothing but trying to get out of practice,practice, practice. It seems like they are trying to find a short cut to shooting better. There isn’t one ! Go shoot your bow and practice. There’s nothing better than time and effort.

Unless you’re a pro shooting shooting X’s nearly every shot on a Vegas 3 spot, you’re not gonna be able to tell the difference in arrow flights. Get good arrows, set up your rest correctly & just practice a lot.

What about with a fixed blade broadhead on it, the important stuff lol. I tested a few different offsets and helical as im shooting an iron will single gle bevel and the max helical just grouped better. With a feild point I don't think it really matters like you say. Show a video with some fixed blade broadheads, cause I know it ain't the same. I do local 3D and some target events foe fun and practice with some add anxiety and I use ny full hunting setup because that what matters to me, if I ever decide to build a target setup who cares about all this heck I'd shoot no fetchings if I could cause it's a feildpoint up front with no lift created
