Great suggestion. I did this for a live setup, and 𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 cleaned up the guitars and vocals. This gives them more definition, less muddiness, and a much more pleasant listening experience for an audience. Plus, it has the added benefit of being easier to hear the instruments for a vocalist singing. Additionally, it reduces the added muddiness of room reflections that can kill the clarity of a mix where there are hard floors, walls and odd bounce backs. Thanks.

Agreed. There's only a few "always" things I do when mixing. Sending the reverb and delay to their own channel is one. There's more control over the effect, and you're now open to send other channels into that reverb. I will EQ the reverb much like this as well. I also pseudo automate my reverb with a sidechain compressor.

In the music I mix, that big bottom end is critical to a good mix: think of an organ or ensemble (double bass, tuba) in a cathedral - in that environment, not only does the sound bloom, but the bass end of the spectrum cascades longer. Think of a space with the organ in the triforium (high above), the brass ensemble near the back wall of the chancel, and an antiphonal choir left, right, and forward of those instruments (but still inboard of the organ; that area raised a few steps above the pavement). To add another ring to this circus, the string ensemble is often on the pavement (floor level) forward of the choir. These would be normal deployment in a 'typical' long aisle space of this kind. I would like to see a series on mixing for classical instruments and in creating the ideal (and realistic) audition spaces - concert hall, recital hall, and my use case, cathedral or large church. Many of use are using a mishmash of libraries, and insights there would be helpful too - especially as it would be preferable to use one reverb environment for the entire kit, not the separate ones that come with each library.

It's always really great to put major effects on busses like this so you can experiment with other effects on the bus to create a really unique sound to your reverb/delay. One of my personal favourite things to do is remove prominent frequencies using a VST like Soothe and cutting out the lows and mids on a reverb to just get reverb on the breath. You should try it out.

Joe... Sweet - Been doing this both live and in studio for years... By removing that low end of the reverb we allow the shimmer to appear without the "rumble" that appears This is really beneficial in live work - where you are often fighting room reflections. Thanks for showing others this "trick" - :)

Tag teaming with Joe, I've recently learned the trick of putting the EQ between the primary signal and the reverb, so those low frequencies never even get there. The difference between the two sounds is subtle but notable.

Great advice! I need to go check all my templates and make sure I'm doing this consistently. Another thing to mention regarding reverbs on sends vs tracks is that it's far less CPU intensive to have 3 or 4 reverb sends than a reverb plugin on every single channel.

I am a big Studio One fan but use a lot of 3rd party plugins because the stock ones lack the basic functions that other plugins have. Some suggestions for stock plugin improvements are; low and high cut EQ filters on all Reverb and Delay plugins, mid/side option on the ProEQ plugin.

Just a quick question - I have started to do Reverb as described in this video (not just for the improvement in sound - though my ears are still learning this stuff - but also from an organisation POV). My query is if the same error and fix as per this video are applicable to Chorus and Flanger effects - if this is applicable perhaps there could be a video dealing with them as well?

@presonus Audio Electronics #Joe Gilder I am just curious here. Sometimes I've read in groups that they like to print the reverb, delays etc onto another track and leave vocals or guitar dry. 1st question... If you can do that How? 2nd question.... Why would you do that? Thanks for entertainimg my questions! Great content as always

You also could've used the channel spillter tool in frequency mode to send only the frequency content you want to a reverb. I always use reverbs on sends though. I think the splitter tool is highly underrated and I WISH Presonus would make the controls in the splitter tool midi mappable!
@binarysun_
@binarysun_ 8 ай бұрын
Same here. Love the splitter. Not only for only sending the wanted freq to a send but also for mid/side stuff. But I always wonder if this could have more features though I am unsure which specifically
@ledheavy26
@ledheavy26 8 ай бұрын
@@binarysun_ Being able to map the controls to midi for splitter channel mutes, volumes, frequency balance and so on would be HUGE. Being able to bypass a split chain (with a mappable control) would be great. Being able to route audio through sidechaining inside the same channel would also be awesome. While we're at it, make the channel macro controls (buttons for instance) be able to be mapped to more than one parameter and then give us polarity control for each parameter if a control is mapped (one button push turns on one parameter and turns off the other for instance). I've been trying to create a comprehensive guitar rig setup (NAM with other plugins) and a lot of the issues I'm running into could be fixed with these changes.

Hi Joe -- great video. One question though: I think I saw you put the EQ after the verb. Is it best there or what if we remove the low end before the EQ? Wouldn't that clean up the signal more efficiently? Or will the verb just add low-end artifacts even though the input signal was high-passed?
@Mikey__R
@Mikey__R 8 ай бұрын
It makes no difference at all, unless you add some non-linear processing in there too, like compression or saturation. When you add two linear processes, it's like X + Y = Y + X. Mathematically, they're commutative, but that's probably more information than you wanted.

Pure GOLD!! I was literally just hours away from uploading a song for release when I saw this vid listed on the Studio One news feed. I'd long ago accepted that I'll never get a decent reverb on my virtual guitars without compromising the integrity of the raw sound, and reluctantly had learnt to live with muddy guitars. But now....WOAH YEAH BABY!! My guitars suddenly sound twice as loud without actually being any louder! Like some wierd compression trick or something. And now my song sounds like it's just been given a shot of adrenaline in both arms! Look out world, I'm about to release a MONSTER!!!
