A lot of people are plagued by the feeling that society used to be better, that neighbors were more helpful, that strangers once talked to you. Some people channel that belief into political action, as in the Make America Great Again movement. A new study explains why the sense that people and the culture have gotten worse is a psychological illusion.

I'm old enough to remember when Christians used to talk about the Good Samaritan, now trump is their new Jesus.

And they used to burn crosses. White supremacy is embedded in Christianity.

I think when you are young you have a naïveté that you lose as you grow older. This makes you think the world is a good place.

5:52 Oh, this is great. So, as soon as you have to start "adulting", the world turns out to be ruder and less caring. When we have to start dealing with our own problems and aren't being cared for by a parental units, the world gets worse.

people aren't necessarily colder, they're just more afraid.

The 24 hour news cycle I think has a lot to do with this. Also the thing Reagan got rid of for news media.

But the world is chancing in so many ways. 15% of young people surveyed today have no friends, compared to 1% in the early 90's, thanks to the internet I assume.

the world has changed a great deal since i was a kid. (btw I don't remember people being nice AT ALL back in the 70s lol ) but the world certainly has changed with technology, population growth and economic opportunities. i think it's perfectly fair to believe the world was better back in the day, but people are and always will be the same.

2:53 The pandemic traumatized everyone in a way that has never happened in history - we stopped the world for 2 weeks. I believe this traumatization caused a fight or flight (or freeze or fawn) response in everyone. Our current technological society never allows us to disconnect to allow the brain to exit the ForF. Due to repeated traumas, people’s amygdala’s maybe stuck in a hijacked state. We need breaks to let our brain heal.

How incredibly condescending to old people to say their description of the past is a psychological illusion. They know more about their own lives than you do.
