The Temple- outside & inside is filled with SYMBOLS to help us to remember, "think about" , identify, and memorialize our amazing SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. We can learn to feel more genuine love for him! It's a wonderful process of learning to "relish" repentance and feel his mercy & grace towards us personally.

Same thing happened to me. When I was like, 15 I stumbled across a video on KZfaq that someone secretly took in the temple. I was like, “that’s not Mormons, I’ve never seen that before”. I was a little weirded out and I asked my mom. She explained that that does happen in the temple, and that they are asked to not talk about certain things outside of the temple due do their sacred nature. I’m kinda glad I saw that video because now as I’m preparing for my own endowment, I know what to expect a little better. Also my stake president (who is awesome) explained a lot of things to me as I have been preparing that I didn’t know before. People definitely need to stop keeping the things that don’t need to be a secret a secret. It creates confusion and scares people when they learn about it. Other religions have rituals that involve symbols, like the Catholic Church for example. Symbols are just part of religion in general 🤷🏼‍♂️

It’s important to keep in mind that literally any ceremony from any religion can be made to look “cult-like” when displayed out of its proper context and in bad faith. Imagine how a regular baptism looks without the cultural context you already have for it, for example.

Because I went through the temple with my family, and I knew what kind of person were my parents and siblings, they are good people. And because I knew my mother wouldn't let me do something that would hurt me, or scare me, or humiliate me (for any things, work, school, church...) I felt safe. So yeah I was surprised, but each time I was surprised I would look at my my family and be reassured. I love the temple. I go there as much as I can. :)

I struggle with the temple a lot. I 100% felt it when you guys were talking about how people should know what covenants they will be making prior to getting there. That happened to me and because I felt like I couldn't talk about anything in the temple, it happened to my wife. Yes, you don't have to make those covenants even while you're there, but in most cases, your whole extended family is there, friends are there. I can only assume what kind of scene it would cause if you just walked out at that point. Then, they ask you to leave if you're not comfortable with making the covenants prior to you knowing what those covenants are, so if you change your mind, it's not going to be then.

@@germanslice Ok, well "study the scriptures" is pretty broad. I wasn't told anything. I went through the temple prep class and didn't find that to be helpful in retrospect. I thought I was prepared. Then I got there and I wasn't. I wasn't told what to study. I wasn't told "Hey, these chapters explain a lot of the ceremony." I wasn't even told that there would likely be things I wouldn't understand. I was just told that I needed to go and that there would be certain promises I would make, but we couldn't talk about them.

@@tysonmontgomery3849 What a member should be doing if they are going to enter into the temple for the first time is study their scriptures on the temple, so when the time comes a year or so later they be ready to enter into the temple to learn of the higher knowledge as you must have all the foundational doctrinal basics already laid down first before you enter the temple. If you go in unprepared spiritually, you will not get the same light and knowledge from the temple and the temple experience will be different from those who are spiritually prepared. So you must have the Holy Ghost with you to enter into that place, you must be living close to the Lord before entering in. Its no good going to the temple in if you are not feeling the Spirit with you as the teaching of the temple can only be taught by the spirit. . SO you must be in tune with the Holy Ghost in order to understand the temple teachings because its highly symbolic. So its important to become converted to the gospel first before going in the temple, that's why they give year of time before going in to receive the endowment. As the temple is the Lord's University so we are expected to be living the basics of the gospel first before entering in. Temple Prep class assumes you have already done the scripture study on the temple and gives an overall basic understanding of it to discuss only those things that can be talked about outside of the temple, that's why Temple prep class can't tell you everything that goes on in the temple.

The temple was as weird as Mass was the first time I attended it, and significantly less weird (and evil seeming) than an Eastern Orthodox liturgy. I walked out of all three experiences going “God is not here.” But that’s what happens when you’re suddenly confronted with symbolism you’ve never seen before: strange clothes and chanting and ritual practices all make for a creepy experience. Once you’re used to it, though, you find beauty in it. I now find the Mass breathtakingly beautiful. I now find Eastern Orthodox liturgy bearable and fascinating. And I’ve found much in the temple to love. I wish Joseph had taken less from the Masons (dude was a genius, he could’ve come up with something different) but every religious leader seems to plagiarize so what’re you gonna do 🤷‍♂️

@@getharryonsax The Catholics could have had their services revealed to them rather than taking the trappings of imperial Roman pagan worship. Or, as far as prophets go, God didn’t have to command Moses to use the rituals and symbols with which the Hebrews were familiar (gold, incense, sacrifice, chants and songs, etc) in Tabernacle worship, or Solomon to use typical Canaanite worship practices in the Temple. This was done before the changes in 2005 so there was touching involved. The endowment was something I did not expect. I was worried about remembering every word at the veil, but a worker helped me. It may be worth mentioning that we view the word “Covenants” differently than most people. Typically the word ‘covenant’ as used in an HOA document, simply means the ‘rules’ of the HOA. When we use ‘covenant’ in an lds setting, it refers to vows, or promises made w/ God. Not unlike marriage vows where a couple promise faithfulness to each other, a “Temple Covenant” promises faithfulness to God.

Everything in the temple is symbolic, except for the actual covenants you make. The signs, tokens, environment...everything is symbolic. There is a reason that there is an altar that you kneel at before you can approach the veil. It's all symbolic. The prayer circle is symbolic. These are rituals and symbols that surround the covenant-making process that help you to remember your purpose on earth, what you're striving for and the reward you'll receive if you are faithful. TEMPLE PREP NEEDS REFORM. I was a ward temple prep teacher for a year back in 2016-17, and I don't know if anything has changed since then, but the temple prep I was instructed to teach was anything BUT temple prep. I would always try to incorporate relevant and important things into the lessons, but it was almost never part of the manual's lesson outline. Like I said, I don't know what it's like now, but that crap needs some serious reform. Temple Preparation classes should be centered around the actual covenants you'll be making. Discussing what will be taught. You know, things that actually prepare you for the temple! But nope, instead we talk about ancient temples, the plan of salvation, and temple symbolism (the only three lessons I can remember off the top of my head, haha), which are good to talk about, but hardly substantive. My opinion is just one among many, and I may be out of line because maybe it's better now, but man. Temple Prep classes need reform. Amazing how people accuse the Church of being greedy, yet they obsess on the money aspect far more than the Church does. And let's really look at the logic of this criticism. Temples are able to exist in part because of tithing, because tithing is responsible for funding their construction and management. So when a critic says he wants to go to the temple but not pay tithing, he is, in a nutshell, saying that _other_ people should fund his temple experience but that it's somehow wrong to expect him to volunteer anything. If you really want to read about freaky, outlandish, scary and deeply disturbing Temple practices (as required by God) then read the Old Testament. This was the Gospel to all those who lived prior to the Sacrifice of Jesus. Read this and stop your whining. Now thank God that times have changed. Today we may be required to wear white clothing but at least we're not required to dip the hems in fresh blood and splash gallons of blood on the floor, while incinerating dead animal carcases by the score. "Holiness to the Lord" And these were the good Hebrews, while the bad ones were busy throwing their living children into cauldrons of fire, in order to feed and appease Ba'al.

Question: Do the saints actually use that picture of the actor of jesus as a "picture of jesus"? I just wonder if this is like a "joke" or if members may actually have this picture in their house as a piece of religious art or as a devotional thing?

Not sure why it would be a "joke." Latter-day Saints don't worship or revere pictures. They simply exist to inspire us to remember Christ. We know that the actor of Jesus isn't actually Jesus. It's pretty simple. We see an actor. That actor (John Foss) is known for portraying Jesus in a video series. So because portraying Jesus is what he's known for, when we see the actor, it reminds us of Jesus, even though we know he's not Jesus.
@Bellg
@Bellg 3 жыл бұрын
@@gordonbarnes7005 I get that. But then why are crosses tabboo, but a picture of a human man depicting him is supposed to help people remember jesus? I would think an empty cross is more of a reminder of all the things jesus did for us (dying and rising again) than a picture of an actor.
@gordonbarnes7005
@gordonbarnes7005 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bellg Well first of all, we hold no superstitious aversion to crosses. Or at least, if some people do, it's definitely not widespread. Our reasoning is that: What reminds someone more about Christ? A cross? Or a depiction of Christ? To us, we see it as the latter. We remember "sailing the ocean blue in 1492" by remembering Christopher Columbus, because that's what he did. We remember Jesus Christ's death on the cross by remembering Jesus Christ, because that's what He did. To use an analogy (I promise it'll make sense): In linguistics, phrases have a "head" and a "dependent." In the phrase "big stick," we're talking primarily about a stick, not the quality of being big. So stick is the head, and big is the dependent of the phrase. A head can occur in a sentence without a dependent, but a dependent cannot occur without a head. You can say, "I hit him with a big stick," or "I hit him with a stick." Those make sense. But, "I hit him with a big," doesn't make sense. Using that analogy here, you could consider the cross as sort of a dependent, with Christ as the head. The cross doesn't really mean anything without Christ. So I suppose you could consider our choice in pictures "head focused."

Can anyone name another actual faith (not cult) which hides details of its rites or doctrines from the world?
@gordonbarnes7005
@gordonbarnes7005 3 жыл бұрын
You're asking the wrong question. Why is it wrong? Because it's clearly leading towards the position that religious observances that aren't public are necessarily indicative of a cult. Here's the thing: The temple is about making formal promises with God. It's absolutely rational to expect privacy in that regard. It's not open to the public because it's none of their freaking business. People are making personal promises with God there. And you're calling them a cult for expecting privacy to do so.

@@christopherrandallnicholson Actually, I was leaving it to the respondent to decide what is or isn't a cult. Perhaps using something like the BITE model to evaluate what is and isn't a cult would be better...

@@MichaelSmith-fq3pg The only reputable person who accepts Steven Hassan's BITE Model is Steven Hassan. And the people who use it to examine the Church greatly over exaggerate the extent to which it implies, often due to confirmation bias. For example: Teaching people not to drink alcohol or smoke is seen as a "rigid dietary restriction," even though that standard of behavior is completely rational to expect and is repeated by any physician worth their salt. Another example: Offering people volunteer positions within the congregation is cited as "making them too busy to think," which makes no sense. Conducting music on Sunday _doesn't_ make you too busy to think, at all. I don't know a single person who is too busy to think. I'm a service missionary, and I have time to think, cook, write a book, and invent a language. And I do it because I enjoy it, not because I felt any pressure to "fill my time." Also, the BITE model's point about "Require members to internalize the group's doctrine as truth" is virtually meaningless, because internalizing an idea as true is literally the definition of _belief._ Belief in _anything_ requires you to internalize it as being true. By that logic, _anyone_ who believes anything is a cult member. Ridiculous.

@@gordonbarnes7005 Well... Steven Hassan and a substantial segment of the mental healthcare world. Do you have any better, more objective, method of testing for cult status? I'm always open to new data. The irony of a confirmation bias accusation is rich... and dismissed. Agreed, avoiding alcohol and tobacco are good things. People should choose to do them of their own volition, because such decisions are healthy. However, the church connects a temple recommend, and therefore degree of exaltation, to that requirement. That's institutional control. I also tend to agree with your third point. That question isn't that great. However, that's why the model has as many questions as it does in creating a score.

`The requirements aren't that intense." Just a solemn promise to fork over 10% of your income to the LDS church for a temple recommend. So if you make 50k a year, you're paying 5k for access to the temple and its secret ceremony, and 5k every year for the rest of your life to keep whatever spiritual benefits are said to come from that ceremony. Scientology would be less expensive.

Only Jesus's words are gods words. As its the gospel of Jesus Christ . ...before jesus was sent the world never knew god .. John 17 "oh rightous father the world does not know you." As to gods word.. As Jesus explained.. These are not my words but the fathers who sent me. Hence the true word of God. ... But to the jews or jewish Pharisees.. As he stated he is one with God.. But to them. "Your father is the devil" John 8:44 ... so don't get to stuck..in the Torah or old testimine.. ... As the truth is god does not come from afar. But lives within you as you are one with god. ... And Jesus... Chooses who he reveals god to. ... As no one knows the son except the father and no one knows the father except the son and whom the son chooses to reveal him. .. I see god from within and understand this without corruption. ... Only Jesus..and only Jesus's words are gods words.. You can see god perhaps when your eyes are closed.. Follow Jesus's teaching.. Jesus was sent to save the jews not reward them. So when john was saying do you want us to have fire cast down upon them and destroy them like Elisha did. We too can understand. .being one with God. ...may your path be with God...and May all your ways be..in reflection of gods love..
