When my father died in his small retirement home apartment, he had 22 guitars in it. 14 of them were telecasters. He was the king of telecaster GAS

Musical instruments are a great thing to spend your money on. I have 8 guitars and I like what you said about how some people can't afford one. You've inspired me to go out and buy a $200 guitar for a different community center every year. We need to get more kids playing.

This used to be a major problem for me until I got better at my instrument and started running out of room. There are worse problems someone could have so just keep it fun. Happy Anniversary to both of you!

I find the more I play and practice the less I desire to get more gear. I’m pretty happy with my current lineup and while I still think about getting something from time to time I haven’t bought anything big in a couple years.

I discovered the cure for GAS. Poverty!

The key for me has been getting rid of equipment when I notice I'm not using it, to open that spot up for something I'll enjoy and use. Picked up a pawn shop Les Paul Jr last year when I thought I really shouldn't, but it played so well (still does) and has significantly improved my electric playing. Not just instruments but also for electric, the speaker/amp tuning makes a world of difference in playing too.. if you can get a tight electric speaker tone, you start exploring tighter rhythms, different bending techniques/effects.. and think "oh I CAN play!" Thank you for sharing your invaluable insight Tomo!

I keep it under control by using the one-method: one electric, one bass, one lap steel, one acoustic, one bass amp, one guitar amp. I had to to stop looking at gear online and dreaming/scheming. Less eBay; more Mel Bay 😅

I've been playing with no pedals for 3 years. This has helped me tremendously. I started playing 3 years ago actually lol and I have developed my own tone from practicing every single day. I recommend someone gets used to playing with just their guitar and amp with clean settings, this has helped me despite appearing to hold me back, I don't require pedals to get a nice tone because it's in my fingers and soul.

5 is my perfect number - your statement about that being perfect resonated. Single coil, humbucker, HS, P90, and a Breedlove acoustic. I treasure each, and I play each plenty. I also can carefully monitor the health of each as well in terms of humidity and playability. Anymore and I'd get overwhelmed.

It's true, I see a lot of people around me worrying about gear when all they should be ''worried'' about is playing. It's in the fingers. I only got a acoustic guitar and a telecaster. It's enough for learning guitar. Great video!

Each guitar has a story and significanct point in my life which is a reason why I struggle to sell/give/get rid of guitars. I guess I am very nostalgic. From 16 as my highest number of guitars owned, now I'm down to 11 including 3 bass guitars. Great to hear your stories sir Tomo! Always a pleasure to watch your videos. :)

Happy Anniversary. Buying gear is part of the fun. It can be inspiring and sometimes disappointing. A really great instrument does bring some magic. Every guitar inspires you to play slightly differently. You could still conquer the world with one Telecaster.

I didn't want to go down the rabbit hole of buying vintage guitars but I've managed to have a few very nice modern ones. My latest acquisition is a China made Squier Classic Vibe Strat in Fiesta Red with a maple neck. Great guitar. Happy anniversary to you and your wife!

What cured my GAS is my line 6 Helix. It was tough selling my pedals one by one, but I couldn’t be happier with my helix!

Until I was 20 I only had an afinity telecaster. I refused to let myself buy any new guitar until i got "better" like I deserved it. But one day i said to myself, I am playing guitar everyday who cares if I am not the best. I want better guitars! And now I have 5 and I love them so much. So much fun and having the different types of guitars to play with inspires me to play more and I have improved so much.

Great discussion Mr. Fujita. Back when I was touring, I spent time in a lot of pawn shops. Every so often, I would find an electric that was a deal. Maybe it needed a bit of work. Maybe it needed a lot of work. If the price was right, I would take it and rebuild it. Maybe new pickups. Maybe new everything. Then it would tour with me for awhile....until I found a teenager that needed a decent guitar to play. They were always thankful to get a guitar that had "experience". That is what I toured with....pawn shop rejects. If the neck is good, you can rebuild and replace everything on an electric and make it sound good enough to play on stage. And you don't have to sell your first born child to do it. Most of the guitars that I played on stage had a total cost (purchase + rebuild) of less than $300. My most expensive guitar, at the time, was a Blueridge dreadnought that I bought new in 1986 for about $600. The acoustic guitars were run direct into the mixer. The electrics were micked through either a Lab Series L9 (awesome compressor) or a Peavy Special 120. My effects were through a multi-effects pedal....nothing like the stuff available now though. It had an overdrive, chorus, digital delay, compressor and tuner. That's it. And you could turn them on or off with individual footswitches. I think it was a Boss ME8? I rebuilt a Strat copy once that had a thumb sized hole through the body, between the bridge and the strap knob. I stuffed it full of steel wool and used Bondo to smooth it out. Then a new paint job. This particular "Strat" also got all new pots, switches and pickups. It sounded good....not great but good enough for live performances. Most of the guitars I have owned over the past 40 years found new homes after me. I would play them until I was tired of the sound and pass them on to a beginner. A few were traded for an upgrade but most were just given away. NOW....I have some really nice guitars. Stuff I wish I could have afforded while I was touring. The moral here is to not be afraid to try things. If you plan to play professionally, learn how to solder! It is fairly easy with the right equipment. With that knowledge, you can fix almost everything that you use on stage. Your gear will definitely need repairs at some point. KZfaq has excellent tutorials on almost everything.

First, congrats on your anniversary. My thoughts on GAS is, try to avoid the impulse guitar purchases. I have two acoustics with pickups, one steel and one nylon. Both play very well, however the pickups on the steel string drive me crazy and I rarely play it out. The nylon is phenomenal and pickups are great. However, once again I rarely play it out. Thus, I have two acoustics that I only use for recording. New rule, I only buy if I am going to use for gigs and to record. Thanks for your video and guitar wisdom!!

I have four guitars…Martin D28, Martin LX1 travel guitar, MIM FSR Tele with Custom Shop 51 Nocaster pickups and a Gretsch Electromatic 5622T semi hollow. I have a Vox AC10 with a small pedalboard and a Yamaha THR10c practice amp. I find myself really wanting a vintage reissue Telecaster but I should really focus on playing and practicing. I don’t really need anything more, as much as I occasionally want more. I really enjoy your videos Tomo, you’re an absolutely lovely guy and amazing musician.

Hello Tomo, I used to have a collection of 42 synthesizers and outboard gear. Never made any music at al. I thought i needed it all1 and there was always something new I needed. I finally brouht it back to 5 😊 it's a blessing. Now that I play guitar for a few years. Not making the same mistake again. One amp, one, first guitar and a second, better mid ranged priced guitar. And instead of wasting time checking new products. I practice the instrument.

Ultimately, I think I don't suffer really much, because I have a firm satisfaction with what I have, and they play so well! Happy Anniversary man!

I'm not not in a vintage part yet in my life but acoustic electrics are my thing for the past 3 years buying pick up lr baggs ect to find a organic sound on digital for live streams . Then I bought a Yamaha APX 700II I'm the pick system is incredible ,when thru my R16 interface and my isolation box sound very organic thousand $ after i could say I'm satisfied for now lol. Different instruments, pedals and gear are like paintbrushes for different applications. I think the key is knowing when to stop. Also, I think a good test is seeing what gear you are actually using, what inspires you and what is only gathering dust. I'm working on my acoustic pedalboard now... And there are some pedals that I thought would be great in theory but I'm actually never using live. So I'm rethinking it. Sometimes you don't know except in practice and over time. As someone else said a Kemper helps a lot. For electric I'm truly happy with only one guitar and a Kemper stage. It's acoustic that gets me in trouble. I have a dreadnought, OM, a cheap parlor guitar and a nylon string. Now I'm covetting a 0000, a better parlor guitar, and a baritone and maybe a terz 😬🤦‍♂️...to get those other sounds. Then for a home studio I am thinking about getting a bass and a snare (since I don't feel like the VST snares sound realistic)...but I don't know what to do...if I should be happy and satisfied or improve my studio and guitar lineup. I haven't been recording a lot but when I do I get frustrated I don't have to bass or snare. That's what's so hard...to know what is going to be used and what is a waste or will be rarely used. Also, I prefer to keep my wife more than acquiring more gear to where she may think I'm crazy

I bought a squier tele as my first and i still love it. I have no money to buy another but I’ll finish med school in two years!! But I promised myself to be better before buying another guitar. It’s my motivation to improve.

A very happy anniversary to you and your lovely wife! "GAS" is a funny one... I went from "certifiably fatal" to "managed and under control", to now "barely notice it". Keith Williams from Five Watt World had a video out, called something like, "How Many Guitars Do You Need?" a few years ago, and that really got me introspective. I have a "go to" guitar now, and a short scale Ibanez Mikro, and my solid body guitar needs are met. Sure, I would love a hollow body or even a proper jazz box, but I can really, only play one guitar at any one time! I *am* considering a pedal amp, but "how softly can I pick?" is a game in itself. The temptation is there though, there is no denying it! It's like your "veggie burger" analogy though, they aren't "bad" but they aren't tube amps!

As you mentioned in your story, finding instruments that inspire you to play more and learn more about your instrument, playing style etc. is the key. Moderation in spending is the challenge. I bought a new Les Paul Standard 60's this spring and it really opened my eyes. The responsiveness to volume and tone controls had a huge impact on me! i got way too into guitar pedals when i was way too new to guitar, and while it enabled me to make some cool sounds that i wouldn't have been able to normally at that point, it's sort of a trap because i became obsessed with that instead of obsessed with bolstering my fundamentals and general guitar skills. now 10 years into the journey im going back and starting fresh, taking beginners lessons, improving my fundamentals. and now i take those skills to my pedals and it's a game changer, just wish i did that earlier

interesting topic and great insight. I recently acquired many guitars, amps and pedals as my guitar playing knowledge increased, I believe that as long as you are are inspired to play / practice more, I don't see an issue buying more. Though, I have a 12 string electric guitar that I thought I would enjoy more but through this experience, I now know that it probably is not a suited guitar for me in the long run. I am not brand conscious but at some point down the road I will probably upgrade my guitars for those special styles I am looking to have in my collection. I believe that as musical / instrument aficionados we all share similar, but personal journeys, and often we do not appreciate and enjoy these unique voyages. Again, as long as it does not hinder your journey, G.A.S. can be beneficial. Congratulations on your anniversary and thank you for your time and insight.

A hobby can have different elements to bring joy. One of the great things about playing guitar is the great the collecting and curating of a collection of guitars, amps and pedals. You can even build guitars to make something unique or just fun to build.

I have waves of G.A.S. often; and as others have said, I think it to some degree stems from not being able to afford much of the gear I wanted when I was growing up, and now actually being able to justify to myself getting new/dream gear. I try to be as healthy about it as I can though by always selling something to buy the next piece of gear & almost always buying used, so at least it’s a bit of a revolving door rather than just hoarding gear 😅

Very much happy with my first electric guitar which is a Squier that cost me around 200 usd. In this world of consumerism, it could be stressful to be always thinking what to buy next. It can be a distraction. Instead of practicing and learning about music. Music doesnt care if you use a Fender or a Squier. Thank you Tomo!

Hi Tomo. I've recently discovered you and subscribed to your channel. I have a rationale for my GAS syndrome. First of all, back in 2008-9, I lost everything I had -- including my instrument collection -- due to the economy. Yet, in the past five years, or so, I've decided to reinstate my collection. Not only am I a drummer who has owned a great number of high end drum kits, hardware and cymbals, I have finally gotten rid of all of my drums equipment because I record in my apartment, and no longer have my home studio to have a 9 mic set up for my drum sound. I now use Superior Drummer 3, and it works quite well. However, my guitar, and stringed instrument collection has continued to grow. Yet, I have a very good reason for doing so for recording purposes. I am a songwriter, and having an arsenal of tonal values -- both acoustically, and electrically with guitars -- is very empowering. A parlor guitar will not offer the same tone as a Gibson J 200. Or, a Les Paul Jr. wont deliver the same tone as a 335, or a hollowbody. Single coils sound much different than Humbuckers, or P 90s. An f-style mandolin is much different than an octave mandolin. A P bass is much different than a J bass. They all have their strengths and weaknesses with concern to music production. Certainly, if I was performing every night (which I do not), I would most likely have a main ax or two (or, three) to carry me through. But, a Les Paul is a different animal than a Strat, or a Tele. Each has its own voice, personality, temperament, etc.. So, my reasons for currently owning twenty one stringed instruments -- ranging from acoustic to electric... from basses to guitars to mandolins to lap steels.... are quite practical. Plus, if I need to express myself creatively with a certain sound, I have options. If I need a baritone guitar to round out the production, I have it -- both acoustic and electric. Moreover, the quality of instruments that I buy are usually high end, or vintage. Therefore, it is an investment. At the very least, I can usually get what I paid for... yet, more often than not, I make a profit on the appreciation of the instrument. So, these are my reasons for having GAS. I hope this can give some insight to others who wonder why some people (like me) own so many instruments... (which, BTW, to others.... i.e. producers.... own quite a bit more).... Lastly, as a side note... When I had my home recording studio, I also owned quite a bit of very good outboard gear and amps.... However, with today's modeling technology, and quality plugins -- along with ProTools, my recent recordings are actually much better sonically than I used to produce with racks full of high end outboard gear. First of all, Congratulations on your anniversary. I have owned six guitars over the years. My dad bought me a cheap guitar when I first started playing. Then I was given a Yamaha classical guitar as a graduation present. This started my habit of giving up in discouragement and giving my guitars away. I have the classical to a young person who wanted to learn. I bought a Simon and Patrick acoustic when I was in my late 30s. Got frustrated in my progress and gave it to my middle son. Then I bought a Seagull 25 anniversary edition guitar when I was later in life and attempted to learn again. Gave up, and gave that one to my youngest son as a graduation present. Sigh. It never occurred to me to own more than one at at time. Until now. I recently started playing again, having decided to take myself seriously and learn the tough stuff that would make me a real guitar player. I felt guilty about all of the guitars that I had given away in the past, so I bought an Orangewood Sierra. Which is actually a nice guitar. I had some struggles with it. Found it more difficult to play. But I know this time, that it is probably me that is the problem. Then finally, I just decided that if I was ever going to have a very nice guitar, when will it be if not now. So I bought a ten year old Taylor K24-CE. Amazing guitar. Warm and smooth as butterscotch. So, now I have two. I plan to keep them both. But if I'm honest, it is hard to play the Orangewood, because the Koa is so lovely. But I know that the Orangewood needs to be played in order to open up and reach it's potential. Plus it is a good guitar to take out of the house and play at church or whatever, where the Taylor is maybe too expensive to go out to "gigs" with me. Anyway. That is my addiction story...so far.

A lot of guitarists suffer from this(me too) -First of all Happy anniversary to you and your wife - to enjoy more anniversaries you have to get the balance right ... there are so many different kinds of guitars and if ,like me. you like them all GAS can quickly become a problem - being married with kids one has to be careful what to buy -a good acoustic ,a classical guitar and a few electrics should be enough.... I love upgrading cheap Squiers -one learns about technical stuff like pickups pots etc. and guitar setup basics and fret dressing - but at the end of the day its all time NOT spent playing the guitar -one can become obsessed with the details and forget the main thing which is playing - I recently got an AZES ,cream coloured and it is my favourite at the moment -great job Tomo and Ibanez.

i was gifted a made in japan fender telecaster along with a music man 1x12 amp from my dad that was his rig back in the day. to me, if that’s all i ever play, i’m eternally grateful. but i just put in an order for a silver sky and i feel blessed and extremely excited to play it and practice

Anything can be a vehicle that starts a journey. What is satisfaction, what is a good guitar, what do I like? This led me to pay attention to my own skill, to seek craftsmanship, to see industry and society at work.

Where should I start. GAS has been a big factor of my life since starting to play the guitar. It started with me buying lots of dvd courses (ago this day, I’ve never completed any of them), then cheap guitars (justified because they are cheap), then on to pedals. There is always a reason to get whatever it is… until I get bored and throw it in a box or back of a wardrobe. I started to tackle GAS last year by giving myself a small budget for the year and if I wanted anything else I must trade. This worked for a while until I got addicted looking at resale sites for hours a day. I’m sure others have been here. This year, I’m actively trying to cut down on the amount of new gear videos I’m watching, time I spend on resale sites and invest more time into just playing and becoming the best guitarist I can be. Wish me luck 👍

Around 1990 I sold my Ibanez Jem 777 Desert Yellow Steve Vai signature guitar. I have regretted selling that guitar ever since but it is still the guitar I want to get back all these years later.

Its okay to feel the way you feel about it and I can relate. I've bought alot of Crystal's over the past couple years but I'd say as long as you're always doing the next right thing and you truly appreciate what you have then it's all good.. balance will come in time

I expected more in details of upside and downside from your experience though. I was recently inspired by Minimalist and Mary Kondo videos in Netflix, and also Five Watt World KZfaq channel. Have been trying to reduce stuffs. Found that It s really hard. Im keeping 6 electric, 1 acoustic and 1 bass guitars at the moment. It might not be that many for some people. However, amateur guitar player like me don't need that many to be honest.I can see that some of my gears haven't been touched for many months. Feel bad. Fortunately I have a very small home studio. Don't have space to keep more. I think it s good to have some limitation in life. Anyway, I m practicing guitar more thanks to your videos, which means I use my guitars more often. Really appreciate that.

Happy Anniversary. Well I love music and guitars. I'm about to turn 67 and have been residential carpenter my entire working career so my back and legs are kind of worn out. So now I'm kind of looking to use my carpentry skills and love of music to create or repair instruments. In 2002 my mother passed away and I realized you have to do what you love even if it's only a hobby. I had some friends who played bluegrassy folk rock who always encouraged me to join them. I always thought I'm not talented enough they said "Oh BS it's for fun you play fine." so I joined them. I had an economy guitar I had since the late '70s. I decided I needed a solid wood guitar around that time so I got a D-28 kit from Stew-Mac and put that together. But it wasn't perfect, I had not shaped the neck enough so it was chunkier than what felt good, I still have it and play it a bit. But eight years later I had saved a good bit of money and decided I wanted something that fit me better I searched around and found a Martin 000-28 that rings out beautifully, yay. Then I also have an Epiphone Casino and Blues Junior amp sound pretty damn good. Anyway I've always had the desire to build another guitar, in the back of my mind I got the idea for making a thru-neck similar to an Alembic or something. Then this past summer I realized I need to learn more about electric guitars first so I got a Strat style kit from Solo Guitars. While building it I realized the pickups were a little less output or resistance than optimal so I upgraded with some Wilkinsons now that guitar is complete and I'm enjoying playing it but since I have a set of pickups I've decided to tackle my first from scratch guitar with nice maple and mahogany I have left over from some jobs. I've got the body, neck and fretboard about ready to go. My wife is kind of impressed with it but keeps asking "So what are you going to do with all these guitars?" Stew-Mac probably thinks they've hooked another! Oh yeah my triad practice sounds good over my Dm7-Gm7-A7 loop! Music really does make the world a better place. Peace

Tomo, I love your channel. Really like what you said about giving back in this video. I've got a working collection of guitars. Every one serves a purpose. Don't want a huge collection of guitars because of the maintenance involved to keep them in tip top playing condition. 25 years ago I owned almost 30 guitars. I now own about 15 instruments. That includes electric, acoustic, twelve string, bass, mandolin, pedal steel and steel. That's enough. 🙂

I've went through bouts of GAS in the past, but I've Simplified things since then, I've got more guitars than I play I only play my Telecaster and Gretsch and more amps than I use, I've got one Marshall I use , I could use a computer but it'll keep for a while,

"Having too many guitars, I feel a little ashamed. Cos some people don't have lotta guitars. So you gotta share" I really resonated with that. I think by being grateful through music Is also enough to repay that "shame". In the end, people also feels some kinda magnetism when you do things out of love. CONGRATULATIONS ! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 🎉 ! Yes, G.A.S. can become a problem and take you over 😂. I have had some issues with it in the past. It can unfortunately get in the way of practice when you become constantly looking for the new toy. Yes, Moderation is important. Guitars can be a good investment if you know what you are doing. I brought my Parker Fly guitar and Steinberger over from America to Japan. Here in Osaka where I am living most of the year, I look for used stuff. I found about 25 or 30 guitar pedals. Mostly used. I have lots of amps also. A lot more than I need for sure. A decent cheap portable acoustic is the Yamaha APX 4A SPL. I got 2 of them and paid only ¥10,000 each. Fun for backpacking in Minoh mountain. or when I go up to Amanohashidate. I got a Gretsch Jumbo Rancher acoustic, which I did a fret job on. I recently found a used ( but like new ) Gibson Les Paul Copy from a company called Photo - Genic. I believe It’s an old model, and better quality than the newer ones. I payed only ¥4,000 ! I didn’t need it, but I could not resist at that price. I may give it to an aspiring young player. I also feel a bit guilty for being so blessed with so many guitars while others do not. I think of the words of Jesus in the Bible. Happy Anniversary Tomo! I'm starting to see myself experience this, but I'm still really satisfied with what I have so it's not a habit. I make sure to incorporate my different instruments in my practice routines similar to how you do in your videos, so there's a constant rotation too. It was interesting to hear you talk about this!

I love my modeler but I am drooling over valve amps at the moment. I've never owned one. I'm already all set on my guitar collection from my last GAS flare up....until the next one hits anyway

Great hearing all your personal stories and experiences about your guitars. I love vintage guitars, the thing I find annoying is that many rich guys who can't play a note are buying all these guitars as an investment and driving up the prices like crazy. But for the guys that are looking for vintage guitars nowadays have to pay astronomic prices, because of this problem. Greetings Vic.

For me, my small house, motorcycle and family are enough to get me stop me from getting too many guitars. 3 American Fender Stratocasters, 1 Fender Jazz bass and a Tanglewood electro accoustic are my guitars. Amps are Fender Blues Jr 3, Peavey Max 100 bass amp, a Roland Cube and a Vox MV50. For me, that's good enough. I usually play classic rock, some country, some sentimental and whatever my church schedules me to play on Sundays. For my style of music, I think those guitars are good enough.

Thanks Tomo for another inspiring video. In my opinion, quality instruments can make practicing less frustrating but ultimately ability comes from lots of practicing (the right things), a love of music in general and a good ear. I suffer from this syndrome too since I was a teenager. Im always confused on which guitar to play from strats, les paul, and super strats. Thank You for sharing this Sensei Tomo. I learned from yourd advise! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!

I love my Japanese stratocasters more than my America ones. They are reissues, and I find them so much nicer to play. I dont know if it is because they are made in Japan or because they are reissues but the angle of the neck fits my smaller hands so much better.
