G.A.S. attacks can be painful, expensive and embarrassing. The sad truth is many don't know they have a G.A.S. problem and its effects on themselves and others. Explosive G.A.S. can make you uncomfortable and do weird things like make KZfaq videos.
In this video I offer my perspective on the realness of G.A.S. and how I was able to manage through a recent bout.

I feel like I've got my tone and that GAS has gone. There is always a chance for relapse though. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve got G.A.S. and I’m ok with it. It’s a lot of fun to search out and find the next piece of gear that will inspire new music. Definitely important to keep things under control though 🎸

The more gear I have the less music I make. Quick tip I come to, box your gear and store it in your house with last used date. It's like Xmas again 'unboxing' your own gear after not being used for some time.

Coming to guitars after 20 yrs off.. GAS is real, I think newbs like me suffer maybe more than good guitarists,we are always thinking.maybe this new guitar will help us find our sound, and say this is the last guitar I'll ever need,,but then. We get bored practicing, start watching youtube,KZfaq, thus, the cycle of buying FRESH gear returns.

Dude.. I like the idea of getting some new gear. But.. I rarely have pulled the trigger as the money usually has been unavailable. I once thought .. ok.. maybe buy something cheaper.. or used.. to get something new.. More often than not I have been disappointed with those acquisitions. Most recently.. I got a Stingray 5-string. It was used but a great price point. It was still a lot of $$ for me but.. I thought to myself I should by something I likely will not ever need to replace. It sound great.. plays awesome.. and I’m happy with it. I do have my 72 precision still.. but the pickups have an electrical issue. . . And I am reluctant to replace them for some reason (although volume and tone pots have been replaced.. still have the originals somewhere.. ). Lastly.. yeah.. KZfaq can be great .. Of there is something I want to work on there are many options to choose from.. problem is not getting sidetracked .. .. .. .. ..

At this point I’m pretty satisfied, I just want a mini travel bass or a small ubass for when I go out or travel I can play without having to take any of my good basses into the FL humidity and ruin them lol I tend to sell what I dont use anymore to fund others purchases as to not be a hoarder. I’m Autistic so music, specially Basses are my special interest so I have quite a few. I do have other instruments as tools to make music, but man, I LOVE bass guitars of all kinds.

I liked your comment at the end ... are you spending more time on KZfaq than actually playing. It's crazy how researching, etc... can take up more time than actually playing. Since the pandemic I have definitely done that. I take it you must be a therapist?

Nope :) But I do have a background in clinical psychology. I’ve definitely had to switch gears to less KZfaq and more practice. Thanks for the comment !

I used to buy guitars like grocery items, especially in the $300‐$800 bracket, at one time I owned 44 , sell or trade them like crazy if It doesn't work for me, now as I have gotten older I bought a couple of Suhrs, A Wolfgang Stealth and 3 EBMMs, I realize it's the only guitars I needed to spark inspiration. If I want to sell them one day,I'm not going to lose a lot of money coz guitars just go up in value. I relapse once or twice a year but that's kinda given I guess. When I see a good deal on mid priced guitars I just say, "nah I don't need that,I've got a guitar that's waaay more cooler and playable"...So yeah I cured my GAS just by buying high end guitars

Great comment ! I took a similar path of filling my collection with enough high end stuff to not leave enough room for anything else :)

that's an awesome point. get precisely what you want/need and you don't feel that burning quest to seek stuff out as much. i know for certain things, if i go cheaper or pick a color or idk whatever it is, simply because of frugality or guilt.... the desire doesn't go away. the seeking is still there. so it's like... you either get the thing you want in the first place, OR spend extra money buying the other thing first and THEN the thing you wanted. : P these days i try and run a little mental exercise -- of having the thing in my hands, using it, will i get sick of it, will i actually utilize it enough, will i always pine for the thing i didn't get.....

I dunno what's bigger problem - having three PRS or having none. I really wanna try lot of guitars but selling them is harder than buying in mental aspect. Letting go of good gear is HARD.

I don't know about this "GAS" thing but, I did just buy a Gretsch G5420T in Candy Apple Red and before that I bought a Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder III in Aurora Burst and before that ....

You bring up an excellent point. That sound in your head. As an ancient guitarist this makes me think about my early days of playing. We got a guitar and an amplifier and we fiddled with it until we got a sound that was usable. That was our sound…. So different now with all of the various types of guitars and amps available and the hammer of capitalism manipulated by manufacturers.

i just started on acoustic and almost *immediately* my brain shot towards electric guitars. the first part of that was because certain music kind of needs electric. i like metal and hard rock and some tunes wouldn't make much sense acoustic. BUT THEN, after that, the unreasonable part. it's a lot about the look, style, color. (i'm also an artist, and so this is my affliction). so my brain is like "buy 6 guitars!" which is ridiculous. absurd. i mean, i can't even PLAY yet. then there's the waiting. got my first electro on order but idk how long it will really take. it's an xaviere from guitarfetish so it could be 3-10 days for either processing or shipping or both. D: WAITING is the hardest. because the purchase is made but it's not real till it's in your hand. so then i started looking at OTHER guitars, and also going back to the 1st one i really liked that was out of budget. ($300ish was my cap, to start. this thing is like........ $550?) and yeah, the money buys more qc and better parts generally so that's good. but i wanted low end but decent, to learn on. now i have TWO other guitars coming from amazon because *i couldn't wait* . plus if the order i'm waiting forever on takes damage in the post, i'd be gutted. MORE waiting, MORE setbacks....... so i *bought* that green guild semi hollow, and i *bought* that lemon yellow les paul budget guitar (yellow without a reddish colored wood on back. it was either the amazon one or the thomann's one, and that would have required more waiting.) and even still, i keep seeing cool rigs that catch my eye. even though, as it is, i should probably pic favs and only keep 2 electros at most. UNTIL i can properly be putting them to use with actually being able to play. ...............sigh. you can also call it S.A.S. STUFF acquisition syndrome.
