A dedicated backgammon player taught me to roll from a cup. His rule was: three shakes good - five shakes plenty. Then you remove your fingers from the opening before tossing. The principle being that three was enough to randomize and more than five, too often, can be annoying for your opponent.

My family likes to take a small game with us when we go out to eat. Yahtzee or Qwixx are favorites if we don't bring a deck of cards. My wife, anxious about dropping dice or making noise, uses the "shoo the chicks" method. She'll cup the 5 dice in her hands and gently spill them forward out on the table, as if she were gently pushing some freshly hatched chicks out on the table. She rarely spills any dice on the floor but they'll often end piled up on each other so she has to re-roll them.

The really annoying dice throwing behaviour is if your opponent waits all the time until you have thrown your die before they throw theirs when it’s meant to be simultaneous. Happens in Ancients DBMM. I don’t mind if it’s swaps around and I throw first and then they do: it’s when they consistently wait until you throwing your dice before they throw this. It says if they think they can affect their drive straight to make it better than the one that I’ve just thrown. Drives me nuts!

Not superstitious about die rolling. However, I do insist on a cup, and the die must roll - usually into a box. That's the only way to ensure randomness.

Lee, if you roll successfully to hit, do you then use those dice to roll to wound or do you use different ones? I pick up different ones, it still doesn't work for me...Those who just drop for the 6 Grrrrrrrrr! Subbed.
