Our dice do not hate us, they don't hold a grudge and they certainly don't have a memory. So why do wargames exhibit so many superstitious and peculiar behaviours when it comes to their dice? We've all seen it - and probably done it ourselves - but the simple truth is that Dice are randomisers and nothing we can do will outcome how they fall.

After one Wargame the other player rolled really poor dice rolls consistently. I felt so sorry for them that I brought him some more dice. He promptly got amazing dice rolls and annihilated my forces the next game 😊

This is a great one, Lee! When I began my commute from role playing games to wargaming, I was really surprised to discover that wargamer's had dice superstitions!

I've seen the same sort of behaviour in role players. But it has to be said wargamers do take-the-biscuit with odd behaviour and their dice 😆

The human brain is an odd thing. It tends to see puzzles everywhere and thinks everything else is a fellow brain. "The dice aren't working for me! They must have a mind of their own. I must appease them."

I like to provide multiple dice options to each player in different colors. I tend to pick from my pile of dice based on a feeling about which dice will give me a better chance in that moment. Silly!

Stuart had a metric ton of dice to choose from in the shed-o-war. There's always plenty of choice. If I have one 'superstition' at all, its that I don't like rolling mixed batches of dice. Each fistful has to be the same colour. I'm not sure of that's a dice superstition or the onset of OCD!

I am firmly in the 'I can mentally control the dice' group. My chum is a 'getting the bad rolls out of the way early' group member. Two of my other gaming chums are in the 'anything but a one.. oh!' group and have absolutely no control over the dice, other than rolling 1 when not required, so never believing that dice have no memory, when reminded. I have a D20 from my D&D days which rolled 20 reasonably regularly. it was only years later, after doing the water test, that we found out it was unbalanced and misshapen (from early days of polyhedral dice). Needless to say, it has been retired.

I once used a d20 for roleplaying which always seemed to roll a 1... it was months before I realised the dice didn't have a 20 face, just a second one!! When I eventually stopped swearing I threw it in the garden. I bet it landed with a 1 staring defiantly skyward!!

I'm not so sure... My dice rolls yesterday went into overdrive at about 12 o'clock as the video went live. By the end of the game I had definitely rolled consistently above average. Maybe the dice gods were chuckling along with me 😆

I think there's also a sense of attachment can grow due to dice are a part of a hobby process, and we become invested in the dice as a part of that. For myself, I prefer to try and use dice tailored to the game so for instancwe for ACW I may use a blue and gold spots for Union and Grey and Red spots for confederate, Naps could be Red and Blue dice each with whste spots, As for me its a complimenting the immersion of the experience but I don't have to use the same dice for each game I play with. Its almost an aesthetic consideration.

There are absolutely physical variances in the "average roll" of a given die, some dice are better than others based on their weight and composition. Some dice can be loaded unintentially by favoring one side more than the others. As someone who is hated by all dice equally, I can say with certainty that there is no ritual that can save me from disaster. 😊
@MiniatureAdventuresTV

Every dice especially the cheap ones is likely to be slightly unbalanced. One of my friends insists on rolling all the dice to pick out the ones that consistently roll poorly for that very reason. Of course to be a scientifically accurate test he would need to roll those dice hundreds of times to see this statistically tiny variation between dice... But that's far too rational for a superstitious wargamer 😆🤣

@@MiniatureAdventuresTV if you float a die in salt water you can kind of test it for "favorite sides", but in most cases, you're better off just accepting that nothing is perfect and embrace chaos.

Once upon a time that seemed to be all I could roll. I had a decade of awful dice rolls, made worse by having the tactical prowess of a peanut 🤣. Things have improved and the last three years have been probably my most successful wargaming years ever. Above average dice rolls have certainly helped!

Great video Lee, I am primarily a solo wargamer so see my dice as the finger of fate and entertain no such superstitions. You talked about 'fair dice' and I have often wondered about how fair our dice really are vs the dice used in casinos which have to be thoroughly validated, especially when you see differently printed or sculpted dice, do our logo dice run true?

Add to you must roll a fair die, you must also roll in a fair way. It's possible to increase the chance of rolling one of four numbers versus one of six. I now insist that dice are rolled from cups. The alternative the dice must hit two surfaces and roll on the table (Backgammon or casino rolls).

When I managed a store for that Nottingham game company, a rules lawyer was rolling badly in a tournament. He bought a new set of dice, took the old ones to the break room, microwaved the old ones while holding the new ones up to see what happens when they fail. The room smelled like molten dice which is not good. He did role really well after it though.

I once played a game using d20s where I seem to roll more ones than should have been possible... Then I realised that some of the twenties didn't have a 20 on one of the faces... they had two ones instead!

Hi Lee; I pity your playing in your next game; the Dice Gods will take their revenge on your blasphemy. Wargamers are a superstitious bunch; I have seen numerous dice rituals at games, most of which just add to the humour around the table. I frequently see gamers 'training' their dice by setting them down with either a 1 or 6 uppermost 😄. In our latest game one of the 'enemy' players was jinxing the dice by calling 1 on our throws - happened almost every time he called it ☹. Occasionally one of the group who is notorious for bad rolls, would throw great rolls in succession to crys of "who are you, & what have you done with XXXX" 😂. Wargamers are also dice snobs & hoarders, with separate dice for different games/periods .... there is no such thing as too many dice 😉

Brilliant! However I must fundamentally disagree. Dice do have a memory, as at times they hate me and deliberately roll low. I then apply logic and say to myself it can only get better. But they keep rolling low, deliberately, just to frustrate me!🙄😉

'Dice have no Memory' But it is equally true and often more hurtful that... Dice have no Mercy. As a role player I'm surprised that you didn't bring up that almost every player of D&D has a 'Go To d20' for when a beloved character simply HAS to make that saving throw. With the d6s my only dice related superstition is that as most coaches of Elven Blood Bowl team, never, ever to say before a die roll "anything but a one". The only way to negate the effects of random due rolling in historical wargaming is to successfully repeat Napoleon's feat at Ulm. He didn't have to roll any dice to win that 'battle'. Finally, it's not a superstition, it's common sense, but never, ever buy d4s the same colour as your carpet. It will end in swearing, and possibly tears.

@@MiniatureAdventuresTV I once had 'worst case scenario' rushing down the stairs to answer the door, I 'found' a missing d4. I went straight down and slightly concussed myself on the wall opposite. By the time I recovered enough to answer the door, whoever had called was long gone. Haven't bought a d4 since.
