Started BJJ at 34. MMA at 36. 37 now, best I've ever been and always improving. Hard journey, humbling being smashed by younger guys, but the way I see it, quitting will never be an option.

Hey man I’m 36 and itching to join an mma gym. Do you think our bodies could handle fighting competitively? If I’m in better shape then most 20 yr olds I still worry that 1 fight would put me in a wheelchair lol. Ex: MCL ACL tears, bulging disks, worn joints. I’m wondering if not having ever been beat up means I could handle a 5 - 7 yr career.

@@deciplescorner3228 Sure, I'd say anyone under 50 can compete with anyone from any age as long as the skill and cardio levels match up. By when you're over 50, maybe consider only matching up against people who are around your age. Of course if you're at the very top, then you can't match your cardio up with a 20 year old as a 50 year old. But if you're fighting amateurs or low-level pros, then a 50 year old can still have as good conditioning as the 20 year old. Unfortunately it is probably too late to have a pro career that actually paid your bills. Though you can have a few pro fights if you work really hard and want to have them after you a bunch of amateur fights.

Thank you coach. I am just turned 27 and trained for a year. In 6 months, i dominated my first amatuer match, and in one year had the tko in the first 30 seconds . But i stay humble and train harder because i know there are people who have been training since they were in their teens. I needed this video especially seeing your elder student dominating. So inspiriring! It makes me excited years down the road. It’s never too late to train! Never mind the outcome. Just enjoy the process.

Everything the coach says is true. I begun trainning MMA almost a year ago. I have never been in such a good shape in my life. I've gain a lot of strength, muscles and something that I never really had, cardio. It's been a blast so far and I'm even considering having a fight this summer. I don't intend to be a fighter, but I would like to test myself in a real fight and perform under true stress. I'm soon turning 25, by the way.

I'm 22,5 now and I am training MMA for 2 Years now. I started with Wu Shu when I was 8 but it had little to do with actual full Contact fighting but it helped me in many ways even though I can't impliment it in my skillset completly so far (probably because I wasn't that accurate with it for 3 of those years). I had my first amateur MMA fight 9 Months ago and lost by TKO in the second round and 4 weeks prior to that my first grappling tournament (and first competition ever) in which i also lost both matches. I still train consistently 6 times a week and try to get a Job that allows me to train 2 times a day. My goal is to win a PFL tournament one day or at least have a solid MMA career that allows me to buy some real estate or make other smart investments to retire myself and my loved ones and build my own little Ranch with a little gym on it. My absolute idol is GSP cause he was smart, Kind and well rounded. Hopefully I will get to the top one day in one way or another.

It is true that MMA attract mostly younger guys, but there are clubs that have beginner and intermediate groups where a person looking for recreational MMA can train. Privates are also a viable option. The coach of course has to take into consideration your age, injuries, fitness level and goals. And NOT train you like a competitor. My academy has always mostly catered to enthusiasts, but dome of them were of pro skill level (like the guy in the video that started at 39).

I don't know your particular health situation, but where I would start first is getting better. Do all that is in your sphere of control to get healthier and avoid everything that prevents that. Once you get healthy enough, find an MMA gym and start either with privates or join a recreational/beginner's group. Make sure you tell the coach about your health challenges so he/she doesn't push you beyond your limits. Than just relax and enjoy the process of training. If you ever become good enough to compete and you still want to, discuss it with your coaches. While I don't think it's such a good idea, if that is what you really want, who can stop you? But know you might get hurt. I checked out Ann Perez because of your comment and she is amazing. Good thing she was not injured during the fight with a much younger and fitter opponent. I'd like to steer you away from competing (and besides, you have along way until you can even consider it) towards just training which is very rewarding in and of itself. But if that is what motivates you, hold on to it and work towards starting getting better and starting training.

The Golden Gloves(an amateur boxing tournament in America) has the perfect set up that I wish amateur MMA had for older guys. They have novice division- less then 10 fights Open- More then 10 fights Master- This division is for guys over 35. Not many ppl do it but basically it is for guys who are older and working. This way older guys can get a chance to compete. I really wish MMA had something like this. This would allow guys who were not only older but guys who work 40 + hours, guys with jobs and children, etc. to compete with someone on the same level. You can’t have someone who is 21 and just going to college w/ a lot of free time w/ intentions of becoming a pro fighter going against someone who is 37 working 50 plus hours a week in construction while taking care of family. Having fights with an older crowd gives guys the chance to try something they didn’t when they were younger. Just sucks that isn’t much of an option

I'm 22 years old, I have a little background in karate, had 3 street fights, did beginners boxing course at my high school which wasn't great, it was very simple and capped off at being super simple. And that's it, that's my background in fighting, I know it's no where near impressive but that's my experience up until now. I always wanted be a boxer or a mixed martial artist but I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't start earlier. I genuinely am passionate, I got fire, and I know imp naturally strong, but I know that hard work beats gifted talent, and I don't know if I've missed the opportunity of me reaching my potential Seeing Khabib train from young, as well as Floyd, Mike Tyson, all these names of people who are amazing at what they do, is truly inspiring but I feel like I'm coming close to being 10 years late to making a start in training and competing. I can understand why they started young, our brains are at the prime of learning in our teenage years, so I feel like people like this will be a big threat to compete with Would it be a realistic goal to start and become someone who can compete at pro level? Because I'm seeing a lot of people say they started at 21, 22, 27 and when I see footage of them fight now, it doesn't look like they can compete with any of the pro fighters even though they have 5+ years of training. I'm the type of person who wants to reach their top potential when I do something because of the passion I have for it, but I want the harsh truth if that goal is even achievable More info about me 5' 8" height 67" reach 185 lbs

I just started train MMA/Muay Thai/Boxing/Kickboxing in Jun 2020.Before I join the classes I do some research about the ages that learn about this sports in the gym.So since the article said that there is no age restriction.I challenge myself to learn it.Its very hard at first since I am 31 years old and I never done this even to a normal gym.1st 2 months is hard and I did learn a lot and happy with the stamina I have😅.But there are some people told me who is a friend said that you should learn and train this thing when you are in the early 20's not in your age now-which is I am 31.It was a bit hurtful when she said that, but I said it back it's for health purpose. And they actually don't know that training martial arts is also benefit for your health just like you go to the normal gym.I was like....ooookaayyy you just said that coz you wanna discourage me from continuing what I'm doing what is beneficial for myself🤣.Well you may hurt my feelings but you are not stopping me for doing what is good for me.I will continue to learn as regularly as I can.Because I know what is good for me.You don't like it,not my problem.Just sit back and enjoy my show💪💪💪💪

I’ve been training in no-gi grappling very hard and as competitive as possible since 19. Did some absolute tournaments locally and placed silver in some large brackets. Sidelined for a total of 4-5 years cause of life and two knee surgeries. I’m 33 now and with a year of striking, and I am going to take a fight for the first time this year. Confident I’ll be fine. I spar with armatures my size and really dominate when in grappling exchanges, setting up takedowns with striking but more so w/ pressure. Start thinking you’re old for mma/BJJ when you’re in mid 40s, and even then, consistent training, sleeping, eating, and having something to prove to a healthy degree, you can be a mfer into your 50s. Don’t forget to lift too if you can somewhat.

I am 51. When I was 19 or so, I did judo for several years and was pretty good at it, not the best, but I could take care of myself. 30years ago, there was no mma and when I watch these matches now, I wish I was 30 years younger, because I am interested in this, but my body can't do it anymore. Bad knees and a bad back (scoliose). One of the things when getting older is wishing I could do the things I could 30 years ago, but can't anymore and that is hard. Therefore, I am busy with weights, to keep the muscles into condition.

I totally understand and we do what we can with what we have. Fighting has taken it's toll on me too and I prefer to run and do calisthenics than fighting. My body likes that much more, but I still coach and spar somewhat. Some forms of fighting are much less taxing on the body than others. Judo and wrestling are terrible and falling down is where most of the injuries happen. Striking and groundfighting much less so. Especially striking if you don't go for knockouts. If your aim is to dominate or point fight, you can have a great time and it's not too taxing on the body. Your knee must be healthy of course and a reasonable partner is needed.

Just something to be very wary of if you're gonna compete. When starting out you may be overmatched by some promoters, not all of them are honest. In your first fight, let's say you trained for 6months but they'll match you up with someone that's been around for years with a dozen fights, and ofcourse you'll only find out when it's too late.

Dont hurt any worse to take a hit when u get older. It just hurts longer, way longer. Most of us go to work with soar backs & fractured fingers & toes in our 20's. In our 30's & 40's we are calling the hell out. It's just how it is. It's no longer such a great adventure to work through pain.
