Another thing about the power guard is that unlike normal blocking, it protects 360 degrees around you and above you. it's the ultimate panic button in multi monster fights where you're backed up into the corner between Bazel and Jho.

As a Lance main, here’s a few tips for some Lance Nubs: > Don’t spam the charge attack because it trips people and we’re suppose to help out teammates > Near end game start to get that Guard skill up, you’ll become a *diamond* wall when you get lvl 5 guard >Finally Patience and timing deadly important especially when it comes to mounting a monster or just countering everything a monster throws at you. Finally The Larger the Monster, The easier it is to destroy em.

I spam the shit out of the charge attack when the monster is down or running away. It cuts off the monster’s tail quite fast plus the average damage output stack up really really fast on large monsters. They act as a wall will prevent you from running right through them.

Chazz adams The Perditions Hand (Nerg Lance) is the goto. But for odogaron use the Legiana lance since it’s weak to ice. A few other lances: The Kirin Lance (Thunderspear I think) The Odogaron lance (the affinity is amazing) The Rathalos Lance cause the fire damage is really good. Finally the Vaal Hazak Lance because it looks dope AF.

For those that are 100's of hours into the game and feeling a bit jaded, switching weapon is a great way to freshen things up. I main CB & IG and the lance was the last weapon I thought I'd try, but I thought he Jho lance looked so cool that I'd gave it a go. While the lance play style isn't really me, it is a lot of fun and changes things up nicely. I recommend it.

Maybe it‘s worth mentioning that if you just wanna block after an attack it takes hours to raise the shield. But if you do the counter block you can transition into block in an instant. Also if you notice your counter will run off before the monster finishes its move and you would be open after that counter attack you can press X to go into a power block and increase the duration of your block. Thinking of you Vaal Hazak.

For anyone that wants a lance build that gives high survivability, I have a great set for you. It depends on you having the Shield Jewel however to maximize its effectiveness. Head=Whatever tickles your fancy, personally I use Damascus or Bazel. Chest=Hazak, Arms=Hazak, Coil=Baan Alpha, Legs=Hazak. Charm=Ironside. The goal with this setup is that you should have the 4X healing from Hazak and his set bonus which grants health regen. The Ironside and Baan Coil Alpha will max out your guard skill, reducing knockback to near nothing and reducing the stamina cost of being hit with an attack by 50%. You can block ALL multi-hit attacks this way as long as you have a nice chunk of stamina. And the piece that bring it all together is the shield jewel. Alloing you to block ANY attack like Arrekz said. The Lance I use is the Tobi Kadachi Lance with 3 Health augments. This allows me to almost never need to use a potion in the event that I mess up and get hit or a monster hits me from the side or back. This set will NOT give you the highest dps, but if you need a set that offers high survivability, this should help. I usually put vitality and defense jewels in my build with a sharp jewel in the lance. If you can improve upon my build then I welcome feedback. Sorry this is so long winded, just want to be able to help anyone that needs a good tanky build.

Worth noting that lance (and gunlance) hops are far less effective at putting you out when you've been hit with fireblight, so you'll need to either wait out the fire, or sheath your (gun)lance and roll normally. Not a big thing, especially since if you block the attack, you'll typically block the blight as well, but something to keep in mind. I've seen some lancers hopping back and forth helplessly while on fire, and it's something I used to do myself.

you forgot to mention that the counter only blocks one hit, if you counter at the wrong time during a multi hitting move, you will block only one of the hits but then be left open for the remaining hits and thus still get hit. therefore it's good to really learn the monster and see when it hits once, and when it multi hits, as you can block multi hits if you have the stamina.

if you're quick enough after a counter of a multihit's first hit you can tap and hold R and go into powerguard from the knockback animation, that often works against multihits if you were to slow to get into powerguard, but also helps for the additional counterthrust damage compared to normal counter thrust dmg

After ~750 hours of exclusively SNS, I was forced into playing Lance in the Yian Garuga arena challenge and OMG I fell in love. Such a different play style than SNS but so satisfying. And if you spec for dmg you get some truly disgusting dmg numbers. I think my favourite type of weapon is “it isn’t designed to hit that hard, but can be customized to become ridiculously overpowered”

I'm not sure if I just missed it, but I think you didn't say that by clicking R2 after jumping off a ledge or out of a slide, you can go really quickly into the dash attack. This way you don't have to land, stop and initiate it, you'll instead land on your feet running. I also think you automatically start in a higher tier of the dash attack, possibly depending on distance fallen. I know that jumping off ledges using the dash attack makes you go into the next phase earlier, but I'm not sure how simply falling into it affects the upgrade timer.

I find that the most useful aspect of integrating the power guard + counter thrust into your combo loop is that it allows you to pivot in any direction, significantly reducing how often you have to reposition. Also, it’s just nice to have a satisfying power finisher in there to keep things exciting.

pretty useful tips: -it's not advised to use power guard against a Full black spike Nergigante dive bomb. just guarding is better -You can use the counter thrust back to back against Diablos/B. Diablos double horn swing. -Guard 3 is enough -You can use the guard dash to prevent the knockback of blocked attacks. It lets you close the distance between you and the monster.

I'm still pretty new at the game/series (SnS main currently). I've figured out my playstyle, which is pretty much just sticking to the monster like glue and swinging away at them constantly. Thanks for making this series because it makes choosing a weapon for newer players like myself so much simpler!

Thanks my friend. You are a very good teacher and you explain everything perfectly without confusion. I have enjoyed many of your weapon videos during this new surge of popularity for the game. I played on the initial release but didn't get deep into it. Now though I can't stop. I'm on every day. I've been a jack of all trades so far weapon wise but I haven't had the one weapon that speaks to me. That all changed after I watched this video of yours. I gave the Lance a try and it's stupid fun and I picked up all the combos easily. That's thanks to you. This is now my favorite weapon hands down. I used the dual blades the most but I felt I was hit to much. Even with other weapons. It was a one to one exchange almost. I'd do damage then get smacked. Not anymore and revenge tastes so damn good. Thanks again friend keep up the great work.

Great video, but I think it might be worth noting that the long hop can be done after an attack. Not just after the first/second hop. Lance is surgical, great for sniping weak points. Positioning is king. Your combos being reset with a normal hop will slowly edge you forward. If you have a long opening you may edge forward out of position. That long hop takes you further back so you can start sniping with the tip of the lance again instead of clipping the lance through a monster and accidentally hitting a leg while you're aiming for the throat. Also long hop is great from getting away from other hunters that'll trip you up. It's worth knowing all your repositioning options to always get dem soft spots. Nothing does hyper-aggressive like lance. Be all up in the monster's face 24/7.

I like the lance, not only is it simpler than other weapons but it is also very strong. Besides I like to hold my ground in a fight. Though I have identified that I have two different play styles; good movement, med damage or hold my ground and dish out continuous dmg. Know what, if I ever play the game I will just use the lance. It has been 'calling' me ever since I saw the YT who did a video doing a brief overview on all the weapons.

On another note i noticed alot of Lancers failing to shield advance sideways, R2+Triangle+direction. Hold L2 TO STRAFE with the shield up (All shield weapons can strafe as long as L2 is pressed with R2). You can go in all four directions, forward, back, left and right. This is paramount for dodging Kushala (wind blasts )and Nerg (rear up arm slam) as thier attacks deal chip damage through level 5 Guard.

The long time you have to wait if you hit a wall or enemy armor while doing the speedy-stabby-sprinty and not doing the finishing thrust? I think the logic is that you are fighting. Massive beasts that could kill you in 1 sweep, so you hold your shield with your dominant arm to raise it faster and so you can brace more effectively. Then from a game design prospective it is probably to keep the weapon which extends upward to the middle of the screen over to the left side which has the majority of the UI, this leaves the center right side with a large clear area for viewing the monster.

I’m the same way, I really hope MHW gets an update that allow us to switch which hand wield the weapon or position of the hand. Also they should give us an update that will make a mirror image for hair style. But once the Switch gets this game next year (because Nintendo almost always every game a few years later) I’m sure they’ll get a Link skin and he’ll correctly wield the Master Sword and Hyrule Sheild in the correct hands. (He’s a lefty)

@Leotsune

It is viable, but you need to be precise when you evade, between hops theres a small window where you are indeed vulnerable, so no more 3 hopes of complete invulnerability xd (Which btw was a bit broken back then) PS: I GOT THAT REFERENCE!

Best Wakeup attack is positioning close to a monster's head, charge in a way where the head is close in front of you but you would miss it if you continue straight, thus you ensure that the DI + triangle finisher gets the wakeup multiplyer not a weak hurtbox from the charge itself.

i don't think arekkz has talked about this but guarding with shields, sns, both lances, and charge blade, you can effectively strafe with your block up holding left trigger, and tracking the monster with your camera. This allows you to use a directional input with your hops as well, this works with the guard hop for the lance as well.

Yeah, for maximum comfort use some kind of Immortal Lance build with Vaal Hazak set bonus and Health Regen on the lance... not the best damage but being able to play recklessly and hardly ever having to use a potion i still manage to kill him in about 10-15 mins solo. But i swear the game knows i'm cheesing the fight... I've killed him 10 times now and only got 2 Warrior Streamstones out of it so far. :(

Vaal Hazak Lance with Health Regen and Sharp Jewel, Dragonking Eyepatch with Tenderizer Jewel, Vaal Mail Beta and Recovery Jewel + Grinder Jewel, Vaal Braces Beta with 3 Medicine Jewels, Vaal Coil Beta with 2 Vitality Jewels, Death Stench Heel Beta with Vitality and Grinder Jewel and the Ironside Charm III. It gives you Vaal's Super Recovery, 150 base HP for up to 200 with food, +30% recovery when restoring health, 4x health regen speed, Weakness Exploit 3, Handicraft 2 to get that sliver of white sharpness on the lance, Protective Polish to make that last for a minute, Speed Sharpen 2 and Peak Performance 2 since you're at max HP quite often. I opted to go with the Guard charm because Jho's attacks are so relentless i like being able to recover from these hits faster and counterattack more easily, and just Guard 3 from the charm is good enough for that i feel. If you're not as stingy as i am and want to use Whetfish Fins to speed up sharpening you could replace the 2 Grinder Jewels with something else. Maybe not the most optimal build but it works for me. Haven't played Lance all that much in World, but with this i generally don't feel threatened by him and still manage to get 10-15 min hunts (with using bombs, traps and capturing him). I just like not having to worry and pretty much buttonmash poke him to death, definitely not the most skillful way of handling him... but whatever works, right? :P
@Itri_Vega
@Itri_Vega 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I haven't tried the Lance in World yet, so this is definitely a set that will keep me alive while I "git gud" (plus it's an excuse to use that sexy Vaal Lance). Compared to older games World is very firgiving even if you don't max out your DPS, making a lot of playstyles viable. I personally admire speedrunners like Canta, for instance, but I play the game for the David vs. Goliath feeling and the flashy attacks of some weapons, so the playstyle of a speedrunner would take away from that. And if a monster really gives me trouble, I use whatever I can to win... like sleep bombing tempered Kirin to death because I refused to triple cart on my first attempt against a goddamned unicorn...

(sidehopping through tailswipes casually is nice hehe)

Good video as always. Importance of mind's eye: deflection comes with a flinch. The flinch means you will take longer to block, sometimes resulting in you taking a hit because you couldn't block. Mind's eye is always worth a slot if you have the decoration. Also, may be worth adding into some videos is the parts of the monsters the weapon is most effective on. The lance does it all, but is most effective on wings, tails, and sometimes the body.

A cool thing I noticed is that if you normally block a hit and press X right after you will do the super guard (very useful for anjanath's stunlock trap move) ALSO the dash lance can do is VERY useful for initiating combat (I like piercing the monster then I pull back and do the reverse triangle, this doesn't leave you as weak as the thrust)

7:20 The guard poke is most useful when you still want to damage a monster while learning it's moves, as it doesn't drop your guard. So when you first encounter a monster, you can still poke it while learning it's attacks.

I know this video is old but it's worth knowing, if anybody is still watching this after picking up the lance, the guard dash in any direction can be accessed at any time not just after a step or attack. Simply hold L2 with your guard up to lock your character in the direction you're facing and press triangle with the stick in any direction.

One little detail I picked up that might be important is that the reason you finish your three pokes with the dodge or the counter is because there is a delay after you just use three pokes by themselves where the monster can punish you. So it's not just to keep the attacks up, it's also to keep you safe.

“Lance doesn’t do much damage” Bullshit. You’re CONSTANTLY attacking the monster. It doesn’t matter that it’s at most 30-60 per poke, because it’s _constant_ most other weapons won’t attack as frequently as lance without having a break.

I don't know if you directly mentioned it, but a really good thing to get into the habit of when lancing, and one of the things that took me a while to get used to after lancing in old games, is the shielded evasions and using them more often. Instead of regular sidestep, you can do one while shielding, and it can cover your evade and is very handy for keeping up the flow of damage if you feel that an attack they'll do will hit you even if you evade, or especially if the attack they do wouldn't allow a counter thrust to hit them (like projectiles or certain diving attacks), since it can block more than one attack.
