It’s amazing that she didn’t read music and she played by listening to the melody and copied what she heard.. An amazing woman. I am in amazement over this gem this person this woman this angel who literally gives me chills from her voice. Tearing up now over this beautiful rendition of one of my favorite Natalie Cole songs.. Heaven must be a place of beautiful melodies because there are so many of our voices there.

Some say she couldn't read music but other said that she could read music very well why would she have all those music notes if she couldn't last week you tube showed a video stating that she read the music jazz gospel r&b and soul plus opera give credit when it's due a very intelligent woman and a humble one at that lived a long time with her illnesses because she sang about Jesus Christ a lot even intertwined in her secular music whoever calls on his name will be saved!!We all love Ms Aretha Louise Franklin!!

@@maudeneyarber9997 As a pianist who plays by ear. I took lessons for 1 year and found out that sheet music couldn't do gospel piano any justice. So, I heavily depended on my ear and as a result never fluently developed my sight reading. I played in Baptist and Sanctified churches where you wouldn't be caught trying to read notes because that music requires a lot of adlib. Miss Franklin fell into that same category where she knew her "abcs" in music. But, she probably used sheet music as a guide rather than score to read from verbatim.

yup....I saw Aretha play YOU SEND ME on the piano.....at Westbury Music Fair @19992 or so....some anniversary involving Sam Cooke...with his signed photo on her piano...and the last time I saw her, June 14, 2014, she did a long, wondrous version of her sister Carol's ANGEL from the piano...set the mood and pacing for a wonderful night...retrospective of various songs through her career. The songs with her on the piano...were extra special...deeper feeling.

I was just thinking... You know Aretha knew how to play this song and how to sing it from the very beginning when it came out because it was offered to her, This was her down fall from being the most popular soul singer at that time. I'm sure that she played with this song back in the day in 1975 thinking that she could have had a hit with this one, but she didn't take it and Natalie took it and it became a hit. I do believe if she took this one it would have been a hit for her and extended her another year of winning a grammy.

Actually, it was both, along with Mr. Melody and Our Love. Two young producers Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy, who I think Natalie later married, had a record full of material they wrote for Aretha. She turned it all down and they asked Natalie to sing the songs like Aretha would. She did, ending Aretha's 8 year Grammy streak, and causing a legendary one-sided feud with Aretha giving Natalie the cold shoulder at the Grammy's that year and for years after, according to her unofficial bio.

@@darkfeather6857 mr. Melody and our love were not cuts that were offered to Aretha before Natalie. Our love was co penned by Natalie , chuck and Marvin, much later in 1977.

@bryanjones6765 2 күн бұрын
Not true. Natalie stated in her autobiography that Marvin wrote Inseparable for her during dinner at her aunt’s home in Chicago at the piano in 1975. A rough draft of This Will Be was presented to Aretha. It was not a complete song and Aretha wasn’t interested. The draft with incompleted lyrics was presented to Natalie. Natalie, Chuck and Marvin worked it into the hit song it became. That was all Natalie and the producers groovy talents

Very beautiful tribute but it’s so sad it took Natalie’s passing to bring them together in song. Before Natalie passed, Aretha stated she and Natalie might duet together but I don’t know if these plans were discussed between them before Natalie got extremely sick. Natalie did keep her true illness a secret from everyone but her family. The world missed this opportunity of the greatest female voices of our time duetting together. It’s just sad to have missed this greatness. Nevertheless, up in heaven now, God has them both up there in his heaven choir singing the skies down!! Rest in power to both of these Queens and musical angels!

She sang the hell that song ironically which was written for her in the mid seventies. That being said, Natalie remains the only other singer ever named the queen of soul and would give countless instances over the next four decades to back it up. .. At least in the end they did become friends accepting that neither could out soul the other.
