For the first episode this is true but then afterwards the dragon tells Merlin that Arthur is apart of his destiny and he must protect him. I agree it would have been great but imagine the uproar if such an established legend had been tweeked to that degree? You only need look to "Alexander". It's a fairly well established theory that Alexander and Hephaestion were lovers, at least in adolescence. For certain they loved one another, and look at the uproar from that depiction.

A thought on the whole being held by your lover as you die thing: You could see the parallel to when Isolde dies. She and Tristan are in fact lovers and when she is dying, she says something to Tristan "hold me" (can't remember the exact quote). Then, when Arthur is dying, he says basically the same thing to Merlin. Make of that what you will.

It's been noted [and reportedly admitted by Bradley James] that Arthur actually lips the words "I love you.." before saying 'thank you' --- which he actually did say many times during the series. But for reasons we can only speculate [and how they did it] what was heard was the Thank You. This admission is the ONLY thing that could have been truly said at the point of Arthur's death...and it totally fits the whole presentation you've outlined in this vid. Excellent work....!

It's not that they're so devoted to each other, because I agree that can still be platonic, it's the way the look at each other. There is a moment in the finale where I honestly thought they were about to kiss. I don't know if it was asked of them or if it just came naturally, but the way the actors played Merlin and Arthur together when they were having quiet and intimate moments was too intense for me to see it as platonic.

I also never felt like the creator’s did a lot of effort to sell the love story between Gwen and Arthur. I felt like they just forgot about it half of the time, while Merlin’s and Arthur’s relationships is intense all the way through.

I'm so late to this, but the reason I love Merlin and Arthur's relationship so much is because that is LOVE LOVE. No matter what you believe their relationship to be, platonic or romantic, fated or wrong place wrong time, enemies to lovers or not, the show gave us a story about a deep, enduring love between two men. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before onscreen when I first watched it, and it was - and remains to this day - really, really beautiful.

I watched this show with my family and so not only did it speak to me personally but I believe it sent subliminal messages to my parents about accepting LGBTQ+ people. idk if it actually changed their opinions on anything but I like to think it made them more open minded and gave them a nudge in the right direction

When he says "it only takes a glance for a man and woman to fall in love" I got so mad because this is something I've been complaining about for YEARS. I hate underdeveloped love stories and how so many people just accept that these two characters who have no chemistry, history, or previous interaction suddenly fall for each other, meanwhile you have stories like this where we will be okay to fill in the gaps and pretend and imagine that they actually have feelings for each other and we settle for it because we know that's all were gonna get and people try to say that were ruining the show or that we're just trying to make everything gay. Ugh!

People often forget that creators aren't completely free to show everything they want without permission from higher ups. I'm pretty sure they've tried, though. Julian even talked about the kiss and Arthur clearly said "I love you", but the audio was erased and changed to "thank you", which makes no sense, since Arthur said it to Merlin many times already. I also think he was actually going for the kiss, but died midway

Tbh Kilgarrah told Merlin that he might not come the next time he calls for him, so I think the last cry for him was out of desperation... (BUT YES ARTHUR WOULD HAVE LIVED??? WHY NOT EVEN TRY????)

Fun fact: the creators always intended it to be canon and wrote the subtext there on purpose, but since this was 2008-2012 and the LGBTQ+ rep wasn’t what it is now, the BBC went NAHHH
