Everybody think that Ginobili won this game. A great mistake, in this team Ginobili, Pepe Sanchez and Wolkowyski were NBA players, and after this Delfino, Herrmann, Nocioni, Oberto, Scola became NBA. Montecchia and Sconochini made a large career in Europe. And Leo Gutierrez is the most champion player in Argentina league. I think this team is the ultimate team of Argentine basket.

Yes! And it should also be required viewing because I'm pretty sure these USA players weren't prepared *individually* from the very beginning either! As I said in another comment, case in point: in the very first game, the team shot 3-for-24 from a three-point line *more than 3 feet closer* than the NBA line, and in that same game, shot two air balls, got a ball wedged between the rim and the backboard, and clanged one off the side of the backboard (leading to a famous line in Sports Illustrated, "thank god these men aren't representing the US in archery")! In other words, it was as if they'd *never* played in that gym before, never got used to moving on that floor before that day, never got used to the bounce of the rim or the backboard, and never practiced with the game balls that were going to be used in that tournament before that first game (if it turns out that that was the case, I genuinely would not be *at all* shocked to hear it)! That lead to a 19-point loss against Puerto Rico (a game in which they got off to a *very* slow start, in which they were outscored in the *second quarter alone* by 21 points), and the truth is, that team actually did *very steadily* improve from there... They improved *a lot* in the next game (which isn't saying much) beat Greece by *six* (still *very embarrassing* for the talent gap that existed), and then, despite *another* slow start against Australia, improved again overall to beat them by 10. Of course, then they lost to Lithuania, and despite finally seeming to find their footing by *drubbing* Angola by 36, the damage was already done, and they finished *fourth* in Group B, *by far* the weaker of the two groups (the one that, as I mentioned, contained minnows Puerto Rico, Greece, Australia, and Angola, and *did not* contain favorites Spain, Serbia & Montenegro, Argentina, or Italy)... And yet, they *still* managed to improve *greatly,* actually beating Spain (who *topped* that monster group with a perfect record, and whom I genuinely believe would have gone on to win the gold medal if they win that game, considering they finished second behind much-better US teams at the following two Olympics with nearly the exact same squad), then had this lapse against Argentina (once again due to a slow start), before coming back much stronger in the bronze medal rematch against Lithuania! And yes, you could see the massive improvement in the individual performances as well. Perhaps the biggest case in point was Shawn Marion, who was *awful* in that first game against Puerto Rico (4 points and 0 assists, going 2-for-8 from the floor, shooting an air ball from 3, and being a *massive* defensive liability), before improving *greatly,* all leading to a great performance in the Bronze Medal game against Lithuania (22 points and *3* steals, going 9-for-15 from the floor and 2-for-3 from 3-point land)! He was one of *many* who saw massive *individual* improvements from game 1 to game 8 (case in point: in game 1, no one scored more than 15, the top 4- who all scored in double digits- combined for only 53 points, and the seven players who didn't score in double-digits *combined* for 20 points *total.* In game 8, of course, Marion scored *22 points,* the top 4 combined for a much stronger *65 points,* and the rest of the team who didn't score in double-digits combined for just shy of *40* points)! Basically, not only did this team not play as a team at *any* point in tournament, but they weren't even *individually* ready to begin, and that rippled *throughout* the tournament (and even within *individual games.* Not only did they get off to a *very slow* immediately start, and slow start overall, but only *finally* found their *individual* form *far too late* in the tournament)! It's a lesson in how important it is to be *prepared* from the *very* beginning, and how failing to do so will create problems that will only compound and lead to more and more problems as your campaign moves forward (whatever profession you're in, be it sports, music, or an everyday job in finance)! I am honestly *very sure* that if they actually came simply *individually prepared* on Day One, with a feel for the floor, the game balls, and the rim and backboard, while they probably still lose a game or two early, they *do* end up winning the gold medal in the end simply due to their overall improvement by tournament's end! The following three Olympics, where the United States were *very clearly* prepared from *day one,* and not only did they win the gold all three times, but did so with relative ease (only being seriously challenged on rare occassions, and still usually winning those games by margins greater than their 10-point margin against Australia that was their *only* double-digit win outside of that 36-point drubbing against last-placed Angola), are proof of that difference (especially 2016, where many superstars chose to sit out like in 2004, yet they *still* dominated due to proper preparation)! Yet again, a *major* lesson in how important it is to come prepared (both individually and collectively) on *day one!*

Congratulations to Argentina for this victory and the Olympic Gold. They had been preparing the base for this team since the late 80's. I watched them win the South American Under 15 Championships in Brasília, Brazil in 1989. Also I had the opportunity to talk to some Argentinian coaches in a biddy basketball jamboree in 1991 in Porto Alegre, Brazil and they were projecting a medal for the early 2000's. That is what you achieve with planning. Too bad Magnano could not repeat his success with the Brazilian National team.

The names of players in USA 2004 team are well known to you while the only players you know from Argentina 2004 team are Ginobili and Scola. The rest are some names you have never heard of. And this team defeated all those great names. Instead of bragging, you should accept defeat and admire their game. Probable if the USA 2014 team played against Argentina 2004 team, they would also have a hard time playing against the Argentinians.

Abdulla Masud you were right in pointing out that the USA team of 2004 was not necessarily a no name team. However, I feel you have neglected a number of reasons why the most recent USA teams would have flattened Argentina of 2004. First of all, I'm not even sure they played the best USA team possible in 04 because numerous players did not want to risk injuries. For example, many of these big name players with the exception Duncan were not yet full fledged stars. For example, Anthony and Wade were much better in the latter part of the 2000s than earlier, Lebron and Bosh were both young and less disciplined, and for the most part I thought that this USA team was lacking in their teamwork. Moreover, Shaq in his prime and Kobe neglected to play. These were players that would have shaken the Argentinian defense. All in all these issues that plagued the 04 team are reasons why I think it is silly to equate this 04 team to later USA squads. Later in 2008, Argentina lost because players from 04 were more disciplined, and other additions such as Howard and a more disciplined Kobe contributed to the demise of the Argentinians. Lastly, I think you might have an argument that the 2008 or 2010 team would face a challenge in overcoming this Argentinian team, but the 2014 team, NO WAY!! In spite of not having as many big name players in the NBA, harden, Rose, and Curry demolished teams. That team won by an average of 30 points in a tournament with other nations bringing most of their best players. Furthermore, Harden would have easily penetrated the paint and demolished the Argentinian defense. No one on that team could have ever guarded him. Curry would also make plenty of shots outside of the 3 point line. Additionally, the defensive play of the 2008 and 2014 was at much higher level of aggressiveness than the 2004 Argentina team. Also, what do you mean Scola? I totally respect manu ginobili, but Scola?!?! Seriously?!?! He's been a bench player on an Average NBA team. I do respect this Argentinian performance, but there is little merit in equating this team to much stronger USA teams that played within the last couple years.

Honestly manu is one of the greatest finishers and scorers of all time. Like in this video he basically took on the nba’s best men and helped his Argentina 🇦🇷 team to victory over all them along with his team. But I mean to upset the nba USA 🇺🇸 basketball like that is hard and it should should you with out any doubt that he deserves more recognition as a 4 time nba champ and Olympic champion. And his spurs seasons are always over 50+ wins.

There are reasons for everything that happens in life. The USA team was clearly dominant in terms of talent and experience, so people find it interesting to analyze why they lost THREE GAMES that year. I watched every game. It was a team with no chemistry. Iverson was forcing shot after shot and they were always pouting between each other. It doesn't matter how much talent you have on the same team; if players don't play well together they're going to lose. Iverson had a lot to do with it. He's a one-man show who has never come close to winning any championship. When they announced that he was playing that year my first reaction was, Uh oh, this just might be the year they go down. And sure enough, they did.

exactly me too, the seeds to me were planted when they lost to Puerto Rico, and i thought they would lose to greece but they did not thank goodness. But this why i dont believe in sendingca bunch of college players to the olympics. i GUARANTEE you, you send those college players on this team, they would have gotten destroyed, and not even qualify for medal cause competition got better and other countries are using their best euroleague mvp players who are PRO. Just think if the USA sent college players in the next olympics, and did not do good, the fans will be BEGGING to bring back the nba players.

Argentina had a ridiculously good team in 2004. They had been dominating FIBA basketball for about 18 months before the Olympics. The USA was getting bored dominating the world at this sport. So, alot of our best players did not go. If we send Jason Kidd, KG, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Shaq, Karl Malone, Ray Allen etc, these 2004 Olympics would have been another blowout summer for the USA. Unfortunately, our best were not concerned enough anymore with winning gold for the country.

They thought international basketball was like a walk in the park, Ever since that game they took it a little more seriously and won every game since. But yes indeed, if Kobe, Shaq, Malone, T-mac and Kidd all played this would've been a blow out. I mean, it wasn't like the worst team we could've sent. There was Wade, Lebron, Duncan, Stoudemire, etc.

For those uninformed viewers arguing that this might have been a "lucky win" for Argentina (whatever that could really mean in a basketball game where they lead the score for most part of the game and ended up with an 8-point final difference), don´t forget that these guys were almost the same argentinian players that gave the US their first loss to a team entirely composed by NBA stars too, in 2002 at Indianapolis, playing for the World Cup. For the US basketball fans, I don´t see the need to make a big fuss about it, blaming so hard to the US guys who lost. The so-called "Golden Generation" of Argentina was indeed in its prime, being the world´s best team in that period of time and they proved so, as I said, not only in this tournament taking home the gold medal, but also 2 years before crediting the first victory ever against a US team composed by NBA stars 100%; lead by Ginobili who also won an NBA ring those years, having a major role in the Spurs himself. As someone said over the comment section, even nowadays US team would have some trouble facing this 2004 Argentinian team. After that not only Argentina lost its level because of the retirement of this one-of-a-kind players for the Country who were never replaced by equally talented newcomers, but also US recovered and got back to their usual dominance on this game, which existed previously and persists until now.

I couldnt disagree more. Although this team would go in history as a great one - there were other non American teams who deserve the second spot more than Argentina in that era. Argentina's team was just one generation of really exceptional players. Yugoslavia was on another level. Yugoslavia dominated European basketball and world basketball since the 1980s throught the 90s and even the early 2000s That is a consistent level of producing championship teams and they have more medals than any other basketbal team except US. I think they are tied for gold medals in world championships. To give you a example how dominant 80s Yugoslavia was in 1992 Croatia went into the final against the Dream team and that team was just less than a half of the legendary Yugoslavian team from the 80s. The Croatia team was made up of players who would go on to be the first non North American players to play in the NBA. Drazen Petrovic turned out to be a promising player in NBA before his untimely death. We all Know Tony Kukoc being the best 6th player in the 90s NBA. There were several others who also played in NBA. Sadly what was left from Yugoslavia in 1992 was forbidden to participate in the Barcelona Olympics. This was just one half. So only half of that legendary team from the 80s went into the finals without a problem and of course jordan was too much for them. Things might have been a little harder for Jordan and Co if the whole Yugoslav team and not just Croatia played. To prove my point - after what was left of Yugoslavia was allowed to participate - they also went into the Finals in the Olympic games in 1996 . That was the other half of the legendary team of the 80s. This team had Divac who played for LA and others quality players that Americans dont know about - but they could have easilly been starters in NBA. Some of them like Bodiroga literally turned down NBA teams and stayed in Europe because faily personal reasons. The dude was nicknamed "The white magic" and not many americans know about him. I mean what else to say about Yugoslavia ? PLayers like Divac and Stojakovic actually were cheated out of an NBA title with Sacrament against the Lakers in the controversial game that even the refs admited it cheating was involved. Stojakovic 's Yugoslavia actually defeated Argentina in the WC 2002 final after they themselves defeated an NBA star team and actually eliminating them from the tournament without medal . Imagine a team where Kukoc Divac Stoyakovic Petrovic and other Croatian and Serbian talents play in 2000s? they would have easilly dominated the 2000s just like their two halves dominated everyone in the 90s being firmly second behind the Dream team. Lithuania can also make a good case by having the first Soviet /Lituanian playing in the NBA - the legendary Sabbonis and others legends less known to Americans . I dont say that whole complete Yugoslav team would have beaten the Dream Team one- but I guarantee you - they would have given them a run for their money purely because they had years of experience playing together. I am 100% sure that when only a half of that team managed to defeat argentina- and NBA teams the whole team would have wiped the floor with Ginobili and CO.
