This is the point in the parade when the batallion arrives in the centre of Canterbury for the speeches and the formal award of the freedom of the city.

I was in 5 regiments in two armies. 37 years as a soldier. But I'll always remain so very proud to have been an Argyll and Sutherland Highlander. It was all about the quality of our boys. And really professional leadership from their SNCOs. None better. Wish I was young and could join up again! Mike Wilson

My Favourite Uncles were soldiers in the Highlanders in the 1950’s & 60’s. One a piper, the other a drummer. They loved their service and played Pipes and drums the rest of their lives raising thousands for charity in bands especially around New Years Eve when they would play in the streets all night raising money and having a few jars as the playing quality steadily declined. They have both sadly gone now. I miss them both...,

I'd recommend reading "Moon over Malaya" A great tale of this Regiment...The only jungle trained Bn during Malay debacle, they bested the Japanese in every encounter. "filleted" by Japanese tanks at the Slim River, they reformed for the final defence of SIngapore with elements of the Marine survivors of the Prince of Wales and Repulse they formed the "Plymouth Argyles" held their ground until the surrender. It is told largely by the men themselves. Brings a tear to the eye.

It makes me both sad and happy to watch this. During Vietnam I didn't dare wear my uniform on liberty even though I didn't go to 'Nam. When I came back from Desert Storm. They held a small parade and the people just stood and watched--no clapping or cheering. When my daughter came back from a year in Iraq her unit was invited to put three trucks at the end of the "Fire Prevention Parade." The bright spot was when we were standing on the island that ran down the middle of Main St. As our daughter rolled up in a HEMMIT wrecker she had to stop for the parade to move. She saw us, waved and said hi. Three little girls in front of us looked up and said almost in unison, "A girl is driving that truck!" It made their day that a "girl" was driving a very large Army truck. The Scots, Brits, and Irish, still recognize that service men and women are important. While citizens may disagree on whether the war is right or wrong they support the service members. We've mostly lost that in the US, all to often we treat our service people as if they are personally responsible for the wars.
@tomlucas48907 жыл бұрын
when you link into UK regiments coming home its all the same, Scttish Regiments in England or English regiments in Scotland, Just watch Black Watch homecoming, dont just watch the troops, watch the people, But look at the faces of the troops, every colour, every creed, Thats Scotland.

Bill Hunter That's so sad mate....you can thank left wing liberals that create all that fuss about welcoming home war ravaged heroes and if they tried that nonsense here they'd get their lily yellow asses kicked....anyone who doesn't support their armed forces is just a traitor to the nation....well done your daughter mate
@Nexus-ub4hs6 жыл бұрын
Bill Hunter Britain is different, we don’t go OTT on saying thank you for your service, the flag or putting military on a pedestal but we make sure they know they’re loved, and where it falls short we must improve in the care of veterans and those still serving. My only hope for all Allied troops and their loved ones is that when a decision is made to deploy its for a good cause, not to line the elites pockets or politicians/corporations to profit from it. But things take time to change. Our men and women’s lives are precious, they take the brave step to volunteer and be prepared to sacrifice, those that have it within their power owe it to them, their families and loved ones to make the right decisions. God bless you and all of our troops. Lest we forget

I'm a liberal and a progressive, and my Father and Uncle fought in WW 2, and of Scottish ancestry, having my forebearers immigrating via Scotland through Canada. My Father was a Roosevelt Democrat. Honoring those who put their lives on the line for their Country is not a right or left position. Scotland is by most standards progressive both in their politics and culture. Trying to take possession of Patriotism shows those who would claim it because of a political position to be neither.
