Love this!! It’s so cool to hear how she approaches the character as an artist. Adding depth and specificity is what makes the characters so real on screen!

I love how many layers she talks about with Anita. She was already the most complex character in the 1961 film, and Ariana seems passionate about exploring that and building on it.

@@kem1233 It is my mistake, I admit I said she was afro latina because I saw it in the comments on this video however, what I mean by colonized is that Puerto Rico was colonized by several other countries other than Spain, that is why their is a variety of skin tones, Rita Moreno even told a story about how she was made to darken her skin for the first west side story and she was called racist by the makeup artist for saying she did not like it because it was not her skin tone. They assumed that all Puerto Rican have dark skin, when their is a variety of skin tones that people have. My friend who is Puerto Rican has a really light skin tone, and freckles and another one of my Puerto Rican friend has a darker skin tone. That's what I mean by that

First of all. if you wanna talk about OG then you should be saying it’s Chita Rivera who played her in the original Broadway show, before the movie with Rita was made. And second, who really cares who the OG is? This is Ariana’s role now and this is about her not Rita.

Totally agree, laughingman. Actually I loved the movie , especially the singing and dancing. I just ignored all the virtue signaling and PCness. In spite of that I had a blast and am getting the Blu-ray when it’s released. I also adore the 1961 original.

Woke priests and priestesses so hate Dunst, who doesn't need to rely on politics and victim acting, that will probably, and unfortunately, give the best supporting actress Oscar to this, sorry the French, nonentity and the others nominated along her than Dunst who's is a superb actress with a shattering performance this very year and an impressive resume. Keep putting on this sad show. The Oscars means absolutely nothing today, unlike the past. Ridiculous!!!

I wish they would drop the whole " whoa is me cause I'm a woman or a minority " kinda baloney, and get on with the movie. I know many of the interviewers are pushing those questions and phony narratives, but man is it getting old. You're not a victim, you're a well paid actor who's going to get even more handed to you over the coming years, so cool it. I can't wait for the movie to open; one, because I want to see it, and two, so we can stop hearing this garbage until at least the Oscar night acceptance speeches.

I understand it can be annoying and frustrating if the shoes do not fit you but this message is far from baloney. I have been a performer for over 35 years and the struggle is real. If you grew up with no representation of your culture or ethnic group I'm sure you would see things differently, it's the whole point of the movie from front to back. @@westfieldartworks8188, sir you need to do some serious research, contact Actors Equity Union or just simply sit down and watch the top 20 musicals. We couldn't even begin to have a story, I don't know what you see as representation but you might need to connect with groups outside your knowledge or awareness zone. Listen to the interview with the director maybe that will help you?!!

Ariana DeBose will never light Bernardo's desire for a sensual relationship with a woman. And the audience will not root for a couple who obviously don't belong together. All the acting in the world will never change this.

What a false equivalency on so many levels. Sexuality is different than race. It isn't visible on the outside. There isn't a history of discrimination against straight actors (why would there be? straight people are the dominant majority..). You just sound homophobic if you think Ariana should be banned from playing straight women. It sounds ridiculous. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, Ariana has never trashed George Chakiris or any of the original actors. She has gone out of her way in almost every interview to praise their performances and say she doesn't blame them for anything. She is just happy that actual Latinos were cast this time around, and no one had their skin artificially darkened. George Chakiris and Rita Moreno have both admitted that they were wearing brown makeup for their roles in 1961, and they have both supported casting actual darker-skinned people in the musical in recent times.

Those actors don’t need you to stand with them. They already had their moment in the spotlight. Latinx people haven’t had decades of opportunity to tell their own stories. They’re finally getting the chance to do that.

@@erinbaileylake9277 Spielberg and Moreno have said that the new West Side Story "corrects" the presence of the non--Puerto Rican actors like George Chakiris playing Puerto Ricans in the 1961 film. What a horrible thing for Chakiris to hear when he is now 89 years old and should not have anyone diminishing the wonder and glory of what he did back then. I stand with the Sharks of 1961 and against those who deprecate them in 2022.
