This is a direct comparison of the Ariens Professional 28 RapidTrak Model 926078 and the Toro Power TRX HD Commercial Snow Blower 1428 OHXE Model 38890.
We will also comment on the Ariens Professional 32 RapidTrak, Toro Power TRX HD Commercial Snow Blower 1432 OHXE versions, and the Husqvarna ST430T during the video.
You can get the Ariens at your local dealer here: www.ariens.com/en-us/dealer-l...
You can get the Toro at your local dealer here: www.toro.com/en/locator
You may also get the Toro through The Home Depot here: homedepot.sjv.io/vR0G3
The Ariens RapidTrak has been around for a couple of years now and is arguably the best track drive walk-behind snowblower on the market. The Toro was introduced this fall and in this video, we'll discuss whether it is a worthy competitor.

Whats the best snowblower under 1000?
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 жыл бұрын
That's not the right question to ask. I don't know what type surface you have on your driveway, how big is the area you want to clear, where you live, if you get drifts, heavy/wet snow, etc. Let me know more and I can help you find the best snowblower for you that fits your budget. By-The-Way, the prices of snowblowers have gone up in the last three years so the $1000 snowblower is now around $1300.

The turning capability of the Toro is far superior than that of the Ariens. you sound like you are trying to be politically correct but if you look at the spec's the Toro is a better machine.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. I don't like to cut down one machine over the other because each machine is designed for a specific user. Certain buyers want the features of the Toro and others, the Ariens. My job is to help you find the best snowblower for you. That said, Specifically, if you spent an hour driving the Toro and an hour driving the Ariens you would quickly realize the Ariens is much easier to steer.

Excellent review Mr Sikkema! Based on your previous review, last year I went to purchase the Ariens Pro Rapid Track 28 at my local dealer. Unfortunately, they were sold out and I purchased the wheel model Pro 28 hydro instead. No regrets at all, it’s a phenomenal machine and works perfectly for my needs. I grew up using a 1960’s Ariens 5 hp unit and inherited my Dad’s 1984 Ariens ST1032 that finally wore out which necessitated my purchase last year. I suspect that my new current Ariens will outlast me. Your reviews and demonstrations are second to none and show prospective buyers exactly what is relevant for making a sound purchase.

Paul, I enjoyed the video thoroughly. Thank you for taking the time to make the comparisons. I live in central NH. Snow conditions vary wildly. I own a Honda HS1132TAS that I purchased in roughly 2000, and often ask a great deal of it. It’s pro’s: Still fires off with a pull or two and runs like it did when new. The build is seemingly bombproof. It’s traction is extraordinary, and the auger rarely climbs.

I have to first say thanks to you for your great and very detailed and in depth videos. Living in Michigan, the weatherman can't predict the weather 12 hours out to save their life. 5 years ago we had snow waist deep to a tall Indian, this year we've had 2 snowfalls that require getting out the snowblower for a total of about 5". My driveway is 35' wide, 35' long then it has a 15' long taper that takes it down to 24' wide for the next 30' out to the road. I've been using a 22", 7.5hp single stage for the last 7 years. At least every year it goes thru a set of flights and a scraper bar. Those replacements just keep going up every year. Our last storm the snow about 4" and was a little damp and my single stage would barely throw it 10' to the side. That's when I had enough. I started my research and narrowed it down to a Honda, Ariens, or a Toro. I wanted a track model, hydrostatic drive and a 28". I liked the track drive system of the Toro, but REALLY liked the Ariens. I decided on the Ariens Pro 28 Rapid Track. Little too much sticker shock so I decided to downgrade my option to the Platinum 28 SHO. I scoured the internet and had almost no luck finding one. I had a complete bonehead moment and forgot I had an Ariens dealer 2 miles from my house. I gave them a call and the only tracked unit they had was a Pro 32 Rapid Track. This unit isn't a go big or go home, its go BIGGER or go home! The dealer gave me an OTD, delivered to my house price on it you'd be an idiot to turn down. It looks to be an extremely well built machine. Other reviewers have posted that it is built like a tank. That's an understatement. You could storm the beaches of Normandy with this thing! The chute controls move WAY easier than I thought. The Rapid Track conversion from track to wheel mode and/or back is really easy. Disengage the transmission is easy and even being brand new it is much easier to move around manually than I thought it would be. The engine starts very easy and the throttle controls, choke, fuel shutoff and even the key are easy to get to. Paul, everything you said about this Pro unit model is dead on. I watched so many videos and read so many reviews I cant remember if you said it or not, but it was said you buy one of these and itll be the last snowblower you'll ever buy. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I could believe it. It's a LOT of overkill for the amount of snow we get here for the last few years, but when that changes and we get the du.pings like we used to, I'll be ready and itll be worth every penny, as long as I dont have any issues. However, my local dealer reassured me if I do have any, I am not to hesitate to call them and they will come and pick it up and make it right. Another reason I like to give my business to my local business instead of the box stores. Again, a BIG THANKS to you for your great videos and helping me make my decision on an Ariens!!!

thank you for the detailed explanation! Yes, you now have the biggest, baddest track drive snowblower in Michigan! It's hard to explain how well-built the RapidTraks are: Yours is designed to clear 40-50 driveways everytime it snows and still last 20 years. On you driveway it will last long enough to give to your grandkids... You are 100% correct. Finding a good dealer in your area is the key. It makes owning a snowblower or lawn mower from them the best choice.

Thank you for this very comprehensive and informative video Paul, it seems Toro and Ariens have virtually perfected these machines. The hydro static drive is a big improvement over the disk and friction wheel system which inevitably gets wet due to not being sealed up well on top. I'm currently using an older style Ariens that's very well built and reliable but have been considering an upgrade to one of these tracked models. Thanks again.

My only experience with a track system is the Ariens you tested here. I had a Murry previously. I purchased it because it can be setup to "dig" into packed snow. Found out it also climbs curbs easily which is helpful for what I clear. It is nice that it operates like a wheeled snowblower when using you don't need the other features. I'm sure the Toro is a fine machine, but I am very happy with my Ariens.

I find instead of lifting up on the machine you can just barely touch the lower track bar and it'll lock it in the downward, "dig in" position. I find it engages fully better this way. I'm not talking about stepping hard with all your weight or anything like that. You obviously wouldn't want to do that, nor need too. It simply takes the lightest pressure and it locks in place. I absolutely ❤️ this machine. It's a beast.

Excellent review on them. I have the ariens pro 420 efi wheeled version and the toro 1432. Both good machines. Wanted efi after froze my 1028 the previous season and more power. I use them on 30-40 plus houses with large driveways and lots of sidewalk each time it snowed last year. I alternated machines. The ariens was used for 2 snow events at the end of the previous year. Broke an auger bolt and then a month later the auger gear went on my 1028 the previous year. probably related to the stupid 2" shale rock that snapped the bolt initially but it got used hard for a few snow falls. Few things on each current ones which is the same for atleast the toro. The auger brake lever has been replaced a couple time on the ariens and the shoot as you mentioned doesnt go down enough. Doesnt seem like much but when doing close driveways and directing away from neighbors homes and gas meters....its necessary. Toro, broke the things i was told wouldnt break on the 1028. But the 1432 only broke the aluminum rod for the drive lever. The light position for the toro sucks when blowing to the right...snow coveres it and with both machines...engine heat causes buildup around the chutes and thus creates ice. Id buy either one. I prefer my toro disc drive for busting through the plowed driveway ends but the ariens hydro is faster when less load.

Excellent comparison!! Unbelievably thorough. I have a commercial Toro Powershift 1031 I purchased back in 1993. Still running strong! Two things that I really like about that machine are the auger and drive. The auger is a steel drum with the solid blade wrapped around the drum. You can hit a brick, or a frozen newspaper hidden under the snow and you won't damage the auger at all. The second thing is the Powershift. When activate, it releases the rear axle, and allows it to pivot back an additional 6 inches or so. With the rear wheels in that Powershifted position it digs deep. I can do dips on the handlebars, at 260lbs, and the auger still rests solidly on the pavement without lifting. I'm curious if anyone nowadays makes an auger like my old Toro, and I'm also curious if these machines with tracks and their systems will dig as hard as the Powershift setup. I may be in the market for a second machine, and from your comparison, I'd lean towards the Ariens (I need that taller auger opening for the 2 to 3 got snowfalls)....but, I'd like a machine that's at least 31" wide or preferably wider.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 жыл бұрын
The Toro Powershift was the best snowblower back in the early 90's. (some will argue the BobCat sidewinder was better) No one uses the solid drum anymore. While it was tough, it really was horrible moving snow into the impeller. Todays open auger flight design puts a lot more snow through the machine and aerates the snow so it throws a lot better and farther. The Toro and Ariens tracked machines here will dig in like the Powershift. Both that a "dig-in" mode where all the weight is shifted to the front housing and the very rear of the track. It gives you the same type of traction as the Powershift but with just a small lever it releases so you can turn it easily. I show this feature in the video. Ariens makes a 32 inch version of the RapidTrak.

Have to stop you at the gear boxes. I work part time at a Toro dealer/small engine repair shop in the rocky mtns of Idaho. We get all types of snow and lots of it. The Toro has a much better built gear box than the Ariens. Toro uses all steel gears of which we have NEVER had to service in the thousands of machines out there in our valley. We have however replaced gear boxes and gear sets in the ariens as they use a brass on steel gear set that will wear over time no matter how gentle you are with it. If i remember right its about a 400 dollar fix. Toro is the hands down better machine when it comes to the major conponent longevity. We rarely see the Toros for anything but regular maintenance.

Yes, The Toro gearbox on the Power Max HD is pretty much bulletproof but I never really heard any complaints about the Ariens cast iron box unless someone was using a residential model for commercial work. Since both are "over-engineered" top-load gearboxes they will last most homeowners years and years.

They sell for about $1,500.00 Canadian in 2022. It has NEVER clogged. By far the Toro outperformed the Honda. You buy a snowblower for performance and reliability. The Honda was a big disappointment in performance. The best snowblower in memory was an Aries 8 hp two stage that my dad had in the late 60's. Nothing stopped it! It would blow the snow over the power lines and it would keep digging into a 7 foot snowbank. I was told that was one od the best decades for Aries. I wish my dad had kept it.

I also own an Ariens 11-28 and it's been stellar. I also owned a 824 Ariens. I needed a larger machine to take care of my large driveway and elderly neighbors. Friends at work purchased the 9hp Craftsman for the price, with supposed identical specifications. The Craftsman weighed less than 200 pounds, the Ariens closer to 300 pounds. The first deep snowfall, three of the four Craftsman machines purchased required the discharge chutes to be replaced because the plastics didn't like cold weather. I would like to find a direct replacement Honda engine for the Tecumseh, as parts for Tecumseh dry up. The Snow King was a great engine, but the garbage gasoline reeks havoc on the fuel system. I resorted to using 100LL aviation fuel to get away from ethanol containing gasoline.

Craftsman have a 12 inch impeller and a "closed flight" auger so they won't throw as far, won't throw heavy snow well and will clog. The new Ariens have a 14 inch impeller and 14 inch open flight auger so they handle all types of snow without clogging.

I live where you need a snowblower. I wish people would quit talking about snowblower speed. When you really need your snowblower……….speed doesn’t matter. What matteres is how much snow they move. People keep selling you on speed of machines………how much snow can they move? That’s what matters. I would give my top 3 forward gears for a faster reverse.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 2 жыл бұрын
Under the dash, there is a threaded rod attached to the speed selector. You can adjust that to give you more reverse speed. BUT it messed up the neutral position and the forward speed notches so be careful when you engage the transmission again. I don't recommend it to many people because it can be unsafe. This works for both friction disk and hydro trannys.

My go-to track drive is the Ariens RapiTrak. The Pro 28 is easier to use than every other snowblower on the market and it will handle snow as well or better than any other brand's "top-of-the-line" machine. The control cables don't freeze. The auger and drive cables are not sheathed and the chute cables are mounted so water can't get into them. They are all commercial grade, heavy-duty cables. Speed-wise the Ariens clears snow almost twice as fast as the Husqvarna. Here is a video I did that shows the two side-by-side kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdpgmbaAtdzJp6c.html. The video also discusses the differences.

@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Жыл бұрын
No, trigger steering uses "dogs" to release the side you want to pivot on. It takes a little getting used to but to make a long shallow turn/curve you will have to pull the trigger quickly for a second every few feet of travel. The snowblower then pivots a little (or as long as you pull the trigger) In other words it's a digital (on/off) instead of analog (variable) system.

Great comparison Paul! I have a fairly steep gravel driveway at a cabin so I only get to it once a month or so in the winter. My current Ariens 1028 with wheels and tire chains dig the wheels in and lifts the front end so that it doesn't really have much effect. Which of these track drive systems would be better as far as going thru the snow and not raising the front end up and over the snow?

Neither one will ride up in deep snow but I prefer the RapidTrak for working in "old" snow. When you put it in "dig-in" mode it will not ride up and has the most possible traction you can get.

The Ariens RapidTrak is faster than most people can walk. The Toro TRX is faster than anything other than the RapidTrak.. Yes track drives are much slower than wheeled snowblowers BUT/Except the RapidTrak is just as fast as any wheeled unit. Lift the RapidTrak treads up into the wheel mode and it is easier to move to the next property than a wheeled unit. rewatch the video from 21:30 to 25:00 to see what I'm talking about. Yes, no flat tires and with the RapidTrak you have all the traction you need for tough spots and the flexibility of a wheeled unit when you don't need it.

Hello Paul, how would you compare the Cub Cadet Pro 3X with 420 cc with wheels with these two snowblowers? Is the Cub Cadet a worthy competitor? Or is the Ariens still the best? Is the three stages a better system?
@PaulSikkema

I don't know. I've been ignoring the Pro versions. Why? Because the 3X regular are not better than the Ariens and Toro 2-stage machines - they are just different. The regular 3X has a habit of breaking shear pins and throwing snow all over the place. I have the 2X 30 MAX heree and it's a good machine - similar to the Ariens Deluxe 30 and Toro 1030.

@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 жыл бұрын
While Honda makes a quality machine and has a "rabid" bunch of brand loyalists the current machines are not in the sale league as the RapidTrak. The RapidTrak is a true commercial snowblower designed to clear snow faster and last longer than any other walk-behind currently on the market. In fact, commercial users like the Ski Resorts are dumping the Hondas as fast as they can and buying the RapidTrak. You have to move up to the HSS1332ATD to get the same performance as a 28 inch Ariens. The Ariens PROFESSIONAL 32 HYDRO RAPIDTRAK beats the Honda in every metric but still costs less. The 32 inch Ariens RapidTrak has quite a bit better performance than the HSS1332ATD Engines: Honda 389 cc , Ariens 420 cc, Throwing distance: Honda 56 feet, Ariens 60 feet Capacity (Published): Honda 82 tons per hour, Ariens 90 tons per hour Drive: Honda Hydro with slow speed, low clearance 2 point tracks. Ariens Hydro with high clearance, high speed RapidTrak. The RapidTrak with the commercial AutoTurn is so much easier to use and faster than the HSS1332ATD. Handles wet/heavy snow: Honda with chute modification kit, Ariens can handle any type of snow including slush. Where they are made: Honda, Ariens snowblowers are made in the U.S.A. Honda AX, Ariens AX engines are made overseas.

Thanks for the great video! I've been debating between a track drive vs. tires for Ariens, any recommendations? Living in Canada, but normal size driveway (RAPIDTRAK probably an overkill but not sure about how much more traction I can get, and is it worth the extra $$ compared to tires).
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 9 ай бұрын
If you get more than 12 inches at a time, the snow is always really wet and heavy or you get drifts where the snow is so hard you can walk over the drifts the RapidTrak is a good choice. It increases the traction 2-3 times a wheeled unit. I also like the balance of the RapidTrak. When you get ready to turn around, push down on the handles so the tracks lock into the "wheel" mode. At this point the snowblower is balanced so there is no weight on the handles. (anyone can turn the snowblower) Once you make your turn just pull the lever under the right handle and the tracks drop back down for the most traction.

@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 9 ай бұрын
That's a great idea! In the meantime I suggest looking at a 2015 or newer Ariens or a Toro Power Max only. Ariens - I strongly suggest ONLY looking at one that has been stored inside. Snowblowers don't have sealed transmission cases and the internal components tend to rust if left outside. Also, older Ariens tend to have a brittle friction wheel and that's a $200 repair if you can't do it yourself. Always start them before you buy it. If it won't start that's usually a new carb ($250) Models older than 2015 don't have AutoTurn and can be hard to turn. Have the owner run the auger/impeller and look at the front end. The auger should run smoothly and the unit should not shake. (bent impeller or bad bearings.) The auger/impeller should also be quiet - no squeals or scraping sounds.

The only recommended maintenance is to check the tension of the tracks. If there is more than 3/4 inch play (or give when you press on the track) adjust the tension so they have 1/4-1/2 inch play. I also suggest checking for debris, rocks and sticks on the inside of the tracks. Remove that debris. There is no oiling, greasing or other lubrication needed.
