Part 20: • Aries Spears: Richard ...
Part 1: • Aries Spears: Chris Br...
--------
In this clip, Aries Spears discussed his recent comments about Will Smith and why he thinks the slap of Chris Rock is overblown. He also weighed in on whether or not slave movies still provide significant social commentary or just profiting off historical trauma in the wake of Will Smith’s latest film ‘Emancipation’.

my only problem is that Aries dismissed fiction. We ONLY have Black Panther as a black superhero movie(modern)...we only have Lovecraft Country as black fantasy/scifi...That's why Jordan Peele is blowing up, because we need Nope, Get Out, Us, etc. Fiction is more important RIGHT NOW for representation than just bio pics...Bio pics mainly only reach black ppl. Sci fi, fantasy, horror, reaches a much larger audience and we need more representation in those than another Civil Rights hero biopic

Aries is right. Compared to some others in Hollywood, what Will did “is forgivable”. That said, IMO, it’s not something for us (the public) to forgive. Will slapped (assaulted) Chris Rock, not any of us. Chris should and will let us know if he’s forgiven Will or not. All that aside, Will’s new movie doesn’t look particularly engaging, interesting or different from any other “slave” movie - that’s why I’m in no rush to view it. They are needed (overall, in some regard) but this movie in particular maybe not.

While I agree with you, a lot of black movies want it both ways. White people have been saying forever to stop acting like victims and be proud of who you are but on other hand as soon as black slave movies stop being made SOME black people will be quick to say WHY AREN'T YOU TALKING ABOUT SLAVERY and the cycle begins. I think there are more sinister mind control reasons why slave movies are being made by Hollywood and a lot of has to do with mind control and them being leftists.

It's so many great story lines of our history before slavery that have been blocked and continue to be blocked from seeing the big screen. And that is where the conversation should begin. For instance a movie about King Mansa Musa of the Mali Empire would be phenomenal for all cultures to see and learn about true history.

I used to think like Vlad too about how we need these movies to remind white Americans their history as oppressors. But as I've gotten older like Aries I've started to realize it's one of the many things that hold us back as a nation and as black people. Movies that show black empowerment is a lot more beneficial for society in the long run.

I guess forgot that there is endless amounts of literature books about the subject itself. Me as a black man and I hate even saying that because I hear this all the time being brought up in conversations like this and tired of how others especially black folks are trying to tell me how I should and should not feel about certain situations. It does not subconsciously corrupt me at all. What it does is make me appreciate the little things I have now and the life I have now because back then it could have been 20. 30 times is worse than my life is now. It was Cecily. But true facts about the Islamic Moores are that they weren't all black people. They were a diverse nation of people similar to America. Another true fact the only reason the black Moores were Muslim was due to the Arab nations enslaving Africans and converting them to their Arab way of life. Africans believed in spirituality prior to modern religion. Islam is not of our people either. The only thing Africa had was Hebrew for the Kushite people. Not all Africans are the same nor have the same beliefs.

@@TrustNoManButGod here’s my pitch: a movie about Tariq ibn Ziyad. Tariq was a Berber ( BLK) general in service to Musa ib Nusaair, the Arab General of North Africa. He is credited with leading the Moors to victory at the Battle of Guadalete, and following up his victory with the swift conquest of most of the rest of Spain. Also, because the Moors were lost to the Christians, which lead to Columbus and Pope Nicholas and the paper Bull, which lead to Gomes Eanes De Zurara, which lead to John Hawkins, which lead to American. It could be the story of the descendants of Trariq. How about that?

Enslaved upon birth, she developed a variety of skills and developed knowledge of medicine, child care, and livestock care. A California court granted her and her daughters freedom in 1856.

I can understand both points, but I agree more with Vlad. For starters, Eddie Murphy's "Dolamite Is My Name" is an excellent example of triumph over adversity ✊️ For anyone whose ever attempted a personal project, in this case, producing a film from scratch, you can relate. To that point, Aaries has lots of criticisms and points to make, but hasn't lifted a finger to MAKE the kinds of films that he feels are important. He could benefit from less whining, and more action💯 Jussayin 🤷‍♂️ I'm in the camp of simply make awesome films. We--the market--will decide which are worthy of our attention. With regard to true stories, I'd love to see the story of *Bacon's Rebellion* 🎬 While most Americans are well versed in the atrocities of slavery, many have no clue about the origins of the racial divide and the concept of "white people", and their being bestowed the power/privilege to 'police the other'. I find this far more fascinating *and* educational.
