I live in 9b in a Mediterranean climate in CA, it rarely rains, hot summers and this is the closest channel I've found to my climate! Love it!

Thank you. I’d dug into the u of a extension resources to find a planting calendar, but it’s so much better to get word from a real person in the area doing it. Just got my pumpkins and melons and squash in last night. Soaked my beans peas and corn for today, and was thinking about throwing in the chard and mustard greens for the heck of it... now maybe I’ll have a months patience ;). Thanks for doing what you do 🌵❤️

I LOVE that you are in Mesa and your info is low desert specific since I live in Gilbert. Since finding your website and watching your videos, my garden has been the best it's been (plus you inspire me to give it tender loving care). This is the first year I've planted tomato plants. Do they die and you have to keep replanting seeds or transplant? I read that someone rooted a tomato sucker? I will need to look that up on how to do that. My tomatoes just don't want to turn red (both the roma and cherry). Is there something I need to be doing other than fertilizer & a good watering schedule? Plus, the birds seem to peck holes in the cherry tomatoes before they even have a chance to turn red or is something else eating/hurting them? Thanks for all you do!

So glad the information has been helpful. Sometimes tomatoes live year round here , but often you need to replant in the spring and again around August. If your plant is healthy you can root a sucker, otherwise start from transplants. This is a hard time of year for ripening tomatoes, the heat is often too much for them. I usually pick my tomatoes when they first start to turn and let them ripen inside to prevent the birds from getting them. Hope that helps. Best of luck to you.

I rooted some suckers from my tomatoe plants and was wandering when I could plant them out. I was told to wait until September but they are getting too large, so I think I'll plant them soon. Thanks

Perfect time to plant. Make sure you harden them off before planting. And then plant them in the evening and give them plenty of water and shade the first few days.

Given we are having a longer than usual, very hot and dry summer... should I delay usual planting a couple weeks? I live in Phoenix and have not seen a drop of rain in my area yet this summer. Thanks in advance for your channel --- after much searching was great to find another Zoni gardner :)

I'm waiting until mid August to plant my tomatoes. For many of the other veggies with long planting windows it may be better to wait a little longer to plant. Let's hope for some rain soon and a break in this high heat!

I'm trying to build Mel's mix for my new raised bed garden but can't find quality compost anywhere. The stuff in the stores is mostly wood chips and doesn't look all that great. Any suggestions on where I might find some or other things I can do to supplement it? Also I got the sunflowers to sprout which I'm so excited about, but is there enough time left for the, to grow and bloom? I appreciate all the information I have gained from you channel and appreciate any suggestions. Thank you and God bless.

Arizona Worm Farm is making a custom "Growing in the Garden" blend and will start selling it this fall. It will have worm castings too. Arizona worm farm compost is the best and it will be a part of the mix. Yes, there is still plenty of heat left for the sunflowers, they bloom almost year round here.

Any issues with scorpions in such a nice lush garden. We are near South Mountain and worry if we had a nice vegetable garden it would give them more places to hide and multiply.

Plant strawberries in the low desert of Arizona from mid September through January. Planting strawberries by November 15th allows plants to become more established by spring. I have seen so many gardens from the US using raised beds and this query still lingers --- do the plants grow in just the potting mix that is in the raised beds or do they take up nutrients from the soil below too ? If it's just from the raised beds then how do the plants grow so well , especially if you are following the planting instructions per square foot ? It is then basically container gardening ? When I start a new season with fresh potting mix nutrients are used up in 6 to 8 weeks and then I fertilize every 10 days to keep the plants going , how often do you fertilize your raised beds after you have topped them up with compost ?

Depends on the bed. My new beds have weed cloth (bermuda grass) underneath. My older beds go down to the ground and go below the bed as well.

Raised bed gardening is similar to container gardening but the nutrients don't leach out the soil as much. I fertilize before I plant, and occasionally with fish emulsion, etc.

Do I need to have the bed empty to add more soil or compost and take the garden grid off? It looked like you put your compost on top of the grid? Do the holes get clogged?

No, I often just pull back the mulch and fill around plants. The grids don't get clogged.

How do you harvest the sunflower heads? We have 4 heads we cut off and have them hanging to dry out. But how do you know when the seeds are ready?

Check one to see - usually the back of the head turns from green to yellow or brown

@@GrowingInTheGarden they are hanging in my garage. The seeds are white and still have moisture. The rim is still green but drying and shriveling. How long does it take to dry them for the seeds to be ready? I have never done this before. Lol

Hello Ladies I live in Mesa and I was having issues finding compost locally. however I found a local guy in Queen Creek he have amazing compost I buy a yard and half at a time he loades in my truck and I bring it home and unloaded a yard and a 1/2 cost me $105
