After their old arena fell through, the Arizona Coyotes have been forced to take up residence at ASU's 5,000 seat rink. If that wasn't bad enough, the necessary additions to the rink to take it to NHL level will not be finished by the time their first homestead starts. Really not great. We'll cover that and more on today's hockey video!

@@hellaacapella the thing is, the arena in Quebec is said to be NHL ready, and from the pictures I've seen of it, that's a true claim, and may be better than a few current arenas (cough cough, looking at you, Buffalo). Only issue is if the Canadiens hold the geographical rights to the area, even if it is 270km away, they may block the move. That's why there isn't much talk of a team in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The Maple Leafs and Sabres would both nix that idea.

@@MikeyKaos716 - the Videotron Centre is everything an NHL building needs to be. It’s too much building for a QMJHL team but that’s where they play. The NHL could totally have Quebec in as an expansion team but Bettman doesn’t care to expand in Canada. The Habs wouldn’t block a move to put a team in Quebec. It existed before it could exist again. Plus the distance from Toronto to Hamilton is much shorter than Montreal/Quebec.

@@MikeyKaos716 I’ve never heard of geographical rights…. How does that play into LA or NYC or other states with multiple teams within close distance…?
@Helvigster
@Helvigster Жыл бұрын
@@hellaacapella I think it's a combination of two things: 1. The Ducks, Islanders and Devils were all created a long time ago, and this was back when the NHL wasn't as big as it was in terms of the number of teams. With fewer teams, there was more room for teams like the Kings and Rangers to make more money. Now there's 32 teams, and even though those teams are still making loads of money, they now have way more competition to deal with. 2. Geographical rights do exist, but I think teams can allow an additional team in their major area, but they will want compensation for it. IIRC the Ducks had to give the Kings additional money because they were setting up a team in the LA Metropolitan Area, and Disney paid up for it. Large market teams I think would be more inclined to let another team in their geographical area, because they can still make loads of money and their profit won't decrease. This is why Hamilton, for example, will never get an NHL team. While Toronto would certainly allow it considering that it won't affect them very much in terms of profits, Buffalo isn't as profitable and they don't want to lose money to a new team near them.

I think a team in any city in Canada over the US would be great and none better than Quebec. The problem is it is both a tiny TV market and it's French. The need to have French speaking coaches and a few players is hard enough for Montreal. To have two teams competing for these limited players would be unmanageable. Sadly I think Quebec is off the NHL radar even if (when?) Arizona fails. The NHL will go to Houston before it goes to Quebec or even Hartford. There are too many teams as it is. I hope the league stops expanding. The only way cities would get a team is if one fails in its current city. The quality of player is already too diluted.
@Statsy10
@Statsy10 Жыл бұрын
@@BLAB-it5un No, the problem is that the NHL has been trying to get balanced conferences for years and they finally achieved that with the inclusion of Vegas and Seattle. 32 teams is also a perfect number for a league so further expansion seems unlikely at this point. To comeback to your weak arguments, trust me theres litteraly hundreds if not more coach in Quebec that speak french and even english easily. Having french canadian players is really important but every teams has players from all around the world. Even old Nordiques had Stasny brothers from Slovakia and anglophone players like Dale Hunter.
@BLAB-it5un
@BLAB-it5un Жыл бұрын
@@TheBobville I said nothing about the need for the players to speak French though clearly this is an expectation in Montreal to have a handful of local French speaking players on its roster that no other team must factor into its plans. I specifically pointed to the desire in Quebec for the coaches and GM's to be French speakers and to have a hand full of players that are as well. I am not making a judgement on this. I am simply pointing out what the NHL and the TV execs know and say. Quebec is too small a market and the need to have French speaking coaches and some players is an extra challenge that none of the other potential cities have to grapple with. This doesn't mean Arizona deserves a team or can keep one. But the truth is Arizona is a far larger media market which is all that matters to the NHL at this point. Again, I have nothing against Quebec as a valid hockey city and sincerely hope they get another crack at the NHL. I am simply pointing out the commonly stated challenges to this happening and I would be shocked if the NHL returns there. French speaking aside, the main reason Quebec has virtually no chance is the media market is too small even though your point about non-hockey markets in the south is valid too. Houston, as big as a media market as it is, has not yet earned a team and the failure in Arizona is partially why. A big media market alone does not guarantee success but it has become a requirement in order for a city to qualify for a shot. Unfortunately a rabid but small hockey town has no chance against a large and mostly modest hockey city.

This is an utter embarrassment. The Cayotes experiment has been a failure. They are trying to keep alive something long dead. Bettman has an obsession with forcing hockey into some markets that just don't work. QC has a brand new building and they deserve their Nords back just like Winterpeg got their Jets back. The Canadian teams sell out everynight and are electric atmospheres, this is good for the game. The Nords v Habs would be an incredible rivalry to see again. I'm all for growth, but as a US hockey fan, the NHL needs to respect and tap into their core and most loyal fanbases in Canada as well. They already did Seattle and LV, enough is enough. Forget Hamilton or anything like that. QC and Houston and that's curtains for NHL expansion. Either build a brand new arena in downtown Phoenix or find an Arena deal in another city. They should also talk to other cities like Hartford, CT to see if they can get a stadium deal there as well or move the Yotes to Houston or QC. I do think there will be at least 2 more NHL expansion teams though before they are done. The NHL needs to prioritize traditional Hockey markets as well, it can't only be about forcing non-traditional markets.

I'm glad your brought up the off ice problems that trickle onto the ice. It's been proven that WHEN the Coyotes do have skill and make it to the playoffs there is a fan base that will back them up. But at the same time, and this is true for all the sports here in AZ, if you don't produce on the field court or rink, fans don't care and will not show up. Put a winning team out there and you'll sell the place out. The Coyotes have been plauged with horrible management and ownership. I'm surprised (and happy, because I am a Coyotes fan) that they have lasted this long. I pray and Hope Bill Armstrong will be the one to actually make something of this team. But only time will tell.

Might i remind you that in the last 15 Years the Coyotes had more playoff success than the leafs. Just saying. Also they are working on an arena deal and so far its looking good. The NHl teams cannot use the ASU lockerroms, because the NCAA forbids it. This goes for all facilities that are from the Sun Devils. The yotes cannot use them too. Only the arena. In addition to that, your news is not entirely correct, because those are the temporary lockerrooms till December when the Annex is ready with the real Lockerrooms. So this is for a month. 4 games to be precise. And everybody has known that for months. The PA, the NHL, the teams, everybody. ANd the yotes have been open to all questions by them.

The NHL absolutely SHOULD NOT move to a place like Houston if they move to Coyotes or expand. You HAVE to get a true market locked in. They succeeded with Seattle and are lucky Vegas gets as many away fans as they do. Texas already has a problem when it comes to giving a fuck about the Stars when they aren’t good, why add potentially another one to the mix? Move it to a more hockey centric sports hot bed and the game will be better for it. The US South should be low on the prio list

The changing room debacle is only for a couple games as the home changing room isn't yet finished. The home team will use the away rooms while the visiting team use this less than ideal temporary setup for a couple games. While this isn't amazing, it isn't nearly as big a deal as people are making it out to be. Arizona wanted a longer away stretch at the start of the season to ensure the arena would be finished by the time their first home game came around, but the NHL shortened it. This, like playing at Mullet, is only temporary until better conditions are met. The team has only recently come under a lot of new management, and they are making a lot of good decisions. Our only hope now is seeing that new arena built in Tempe, which is still the long term arena solution.

Embarrassing. Formerly known Copps Coliseum is just wating, currently hosts the OHL Icedogs - 16000+ seat arena that was built with the expand-ability option of being able to raise the roof. When Balsille was planning the move of the Preds there he already had all the seats and boxes sold. This is the heart of hockey country in Southern Ontarios Golden horseshoe. Makes no sense. The leafs are an hour drive away - dont start about the "protected zone" Its a travesty. NY/NJ and California have 3 teams each.. Southern Ontario has one. FAK Bettman!

I hope the Coyotes consider moving to Utah. The ownership group of the Jazz is active trying to attract another pro team to move to the Salt Lake Area. Salt Lake's only hockey specific stadium only seats 10,100, but that's still more than twice their current capacity. They could play there for like 2 or 3 seasons until a bigger, NHL ready arena could be built. It'd be rough, but still a much better situation than they are in Arizona.
