Barbara becomes crippled and needs a wheelchair, so she gives up being Batgirl and instead fights crime as Oracle from her computer. Bruce gets crippled and wheelchair-bound and he just learns telekinesis so he can continue being Batman in a wheelchair. To be fair, that probably says more about Bruce than it does about Barbara.
