Firearms you might have owned and carried if you'd been armed up with sidearm, rifle, & shotgun in 1876. There were other viable choices, but these would have been chosen by many; in fact, these are the exact firearms I carried on my person and my horse during most of the 1870's.

hickok45 I'll give you the write up I did on my facebook page for my ancestor 1st Sergeant Joseph R. Weaver: 1st Sgt. Joseph R. Weaver (my 2nd Great Grandfather George Webster Weaver's brother b. 1844 in Highspire PA and d. 1891 at Fort Niobrara, Nebraska.). Enlisted as a Pvt. in the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry Company E, February 3, 1864 and Promoted to Corporal, July 5, 1865; mustered out with Company, July 20, 1865. Enlisted with the US 6th Cavalry in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1866 as a Saddler/Corporal. Listed later at Tyler, Texas as 1st Sergeant of Company M of the US "Fightin' Sixth" Cavalry. Served 25 years until his death in 1891 at Fort Niobrara. His Civil War service included these battles or engagements/service in 1864: Near Winchester February 5, 1864. Middletown February 6. Winchester April 26. Affair in Loudoun County June 9 (Detachment). Charlestown and Duffield Station June 29, Bolivar Heights July 2. Near Hillsboro July 15-16. Charlestown July 17. Snicker's Ferry July 17-18. Ashby's Gap and Berry's Ford July 19. Near Kernstown July 23. Winchester July 24. Bunker Hill and Martinsburg July 25. Cherry Run July 28. Winchester July 29. Guard and garrison duty at Charlestown, covering railroad from Harper's Ferry to Winchester till March, 1865. Charlestown September 27, 1864. Halltown November 12. Mount Zion Church November 12. Newtown November 24. Charlestown November 29 (Detachment). and these battles or service in 1865: Affair at Harper's Ferry February 3, 1865 (Detachment). Scout from Harper's Ferry into Loudoun County March 20-23. Near Hamilton March 21. Goose Creek March 23. Duty at Winchester and in the Shenandoah Valley till July. Mustered out July 20, 1865. Later in Texas his duties included (from the US 6th Cav site): During the period from 1865 to 1871, while the regiment was stationed in Texas, the duties falling to the officers and men were of the most dangerous and varied kinds. After the close of the Rebellion the country was overrun with desperadoes and outlaws who were even worse than the hostile Comanches, and the officers and men were continually called upon to guard the courts of justice, to assist revenue officers, aid in executing convicted criminals, supervise elections, pursue outlaws and murderers, and in general to institute lawful proceedings where anarchy reigned. Many soldiers were assassinated for their devotion to law and order, and nothing but incessant vigilance and unflinching courage, prevented the guerrilla community from running the border counties of the State. The records for this period are very unsatisfactory, and important actions, in the light of to-day, are entirely omitted and remain only as traditions from the generation of war service men, who have almost entirely passed away from the regiment. He served with the US 6th Cavalry through the Reconstruction and "Outlaw Wars," the Red River War with the Commanche , and the Apache/Sioux War. Additionally two of his brothers served in the PA Militia called up to protect the North - I think the 201st PA Inf, and many other members of both my father's side (Penn) and my mother's side (NE including Pvt. Francis Edward Brownell - 11th New York Volunteers, the "Fire Zouaves", in April 1861, and was assigned to Company A. Her mother was a Brownell!) served in the Union Army! I watch your videos with interest and of course later Civil War stuff into the 1870s covered here and up till 1891 when my ancestor passed and was buried at Fort Niobrara ;-)! Keep up the great vids Sir! P.S. you mentioned the Rev. War - I've got upwards to 50 documented ancestor veterans in that War (still adding them via DNA matches and ancestry records) - and on Mom's early colonial side (from NE) we have French and Indian War vets and earlier conflicts (King Philip's War!). Also War of 1812 on both sides got 'em all covered! Cheers, Charlie Weaver

Like what you said about shooting one of those in a dimly lit bar and not being able to see. You paint a serious scenario of what it was like. I bet you were a top notch teacher.

THANK YOU, John and Hickok, this is a wonderful video, it’s VERY much appreciated - and enjoyed - and your mentoring of our community is truly beneficial. I’d offer an opinion, with which others may disagree. Many suggest - and I believe they’re correct - that we live in the “Golden Age of Firearms;” modern autoloaders, MSRs and revolvers are plentiful, outstanding, relatively inexpensive and top-quality designs. Moreover, ammunition technology and optical sights both complement the fundamental excellence of today’s firearms. HOWEVER, for almost all purposes, the three firearms you fired today would (imho) be quite adequate - although not optimal - for today’s requirements. The fact is, a current home invader could be rapidly incapacitated with with that SAA or that double barreled shotgun. Thanks again.

Mr. Hickok uses his plastic folder knife to dig the cartridge out. You have the Skinner knife on your belt! 🤔😆 good video! Craig

This is awesome! Reminds me of that old B&W TV show, "The Rifleman."

As I understand it, the opening gunfire on The Rifleman used a sound recording of Chuck Conners on the range with a Winchester. The last shot with ricochet was added in editing, but Chuck could shoot that fast. If my info is good, anyway.

They used to put a small folding lever on the lever, if you folded it out it would pull the trigger as you closed the lever so that step wasn't necessary.

I am lucky enough to own my great grandad's black powder 1896 Tolley 500 Express double barrel rifle (2,400 FPS) with which he shot 7 man eating tigers in India when he served in the British Army there as a major. Still in mint condition.
