I worked with fiberglass for 37 years of my working life, 27 yrs. self employed. I can tell you now that the 6 oz. cloth you were using did nothing to help the bullet stopping capabilities of your test panels. A suggestion would be to use kevlar cloth in the same manner that you used the glass, except , saturate the kevlar with a vinylester or epoxy resin [catalyzed of course]. Then fold the unit together as you did with this demo. I have done experiments like this myself using only kevlar & resin, & it takes about a 5/16" layup to stop a 9mm.. I think the tiles help to diffuse the energy better but I've never experimented with using the tiles. Good channel by the way.

Those test panels gave you a clue and you never even knew it. The fractured panel did a better job than the second panel. This is one of the secrets of the armor on the Abrams tank, which consists of a steel shell, fitted with layers of ceramic tile and pelletized ceramic material. The pelletized material has a tendency to lock together to prevent the penetration of a solid penetrator, while the fireproof properties of the ceramic materials tend to interfere with the plasma jet of of a HEAT projectile. And on top of that, the pelletized material allows sufficient compressibility to interfere with the primary means by which HESH operates - the creation of spall by ablating the inside surface of the armor, kind of like but not quite as efficient as spaced armor.

The strength in motorcycle helmets is in the round structure of the fiberglass and not so much the fiberglass itself. The hard structure is only a few millimeters thick with some additional foam at the core. A helmet is designed to absorb and distribute impact, not stop a projectile. A bullet would be like a hot knife through butter.

The ceramic tiles are strong under compression, hard(so they can grind on a bullet), can take high temperatures, and are fragile with little tensile strength. The tiles should be wrapped individually, and more importantly more layers trumps thicker individual tiles. Bullets fragment and flatten when hitting the tile, and usually a backing material of cloth, kevlar, or metal can then catch or cushion the bullet that manages to get through. It is also the cracking that absorbs energy, so the plates would have to be replaced after use.
@chinoplata1

I think I have a hardware store armor formula for you. We know that the state of the art in armor these days is in lamination. I believe the first layer need be steel , quarter inch thick or less and the second, tile.You got that right, but in between the layers needs to be an eighth inch at least of high temperature silicon with multiple layers of a kevlar mesh. Fiberglass may even work.
@johnnybowman7920
@johnnybowman7920 7 жыл бұрын
You might even have a final steel layer. A thin BACKSTOP , if you know what I mean.

@forgenorth1444
@forgenorth1444 7 жыл бұрын
In composite armors you want your hardest materials up front and soft elastic materials in the back. The idea is for the bullet to dump energy and fragment/mushroom so the fiber will catch it. So you'd want ceramic in front, then steel(probably unnecessary) and fiber glass or Kevlar. Soaking the Kevlar in resin seems to help too. You don't want anything hard or rigid behind the Kevlar as it acts like a cutting board for the bullet to cut through the armor.

Edwin Sar - I bet if you used the resin and hardener on the the fiberglass cloth and let it cure, it would do a lot to slow the bullet and disburse the energy. Lastly, instead of using the brittle ceramic, I'd LOVE to see you use plywood + fiberglass cloth + resin + hardener. The fiberglass will bond to the pores of the wood very well and I'm sure will make it extremely hard!

It would have held the 556 if there was something to damp the strike between the ceramic plates. Like steel or high density plastic. Now the first impact shattered all of the plates giving the bullet easy path. Just adding a lot of superhard glue between the layers of ceramic plates and fiberglass. In the backside you need twice as thick layer of fiberglass to catch the fragmented bullet.

the layering concept is correct... the bonding is not strong enough.. it should perform better with some good adhesive material rather than duct tape

You need resin for the fiberglass, man. Other than that not bad for the cheap materials and simple construction.
