The period leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War was marked by heightened tensions, political maneuvering, and military preparations across Europe. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia, like many other nations, faced numerous challenges in its efforts to modernize and strengthen its military. These attempts were hindered by various factors, including economic constraints, political instability, a complex geopolitical situation in Europe, and limited resources. Despite these challenges, Yugoslavia recognized the need to modernize its army. Acquisition of armored vehicles from Czechoslovakia for their motorized forces was one such attempt. While eight Š-I-D tankettes would be acquired, these efforts proved to be insufficient to adequately prepare for the upcoming conflict with the Axis forces that was to come in April of 1941.

The story of Eastern Europe countires during WW II is honestly just sad, they all tried so hard to build armies strong enough to defend their home lands, but in the end, they lacked resources and time to do so and got out of this war bloodied, destoyed and often under control of Soviets.

@@racingraptor4758 No. France and the UK declared war to Germany. Everybody knew that the British army was very small and that the French needed a few weeks to mobilize and that they were totally in an defensive stance. Maybe if France and the UK waited until 1941 the War would have been different and they would have been much more prepared with ''maybes'' you can get to the moon...

@@michalbarsfajny4268 And by Poland and Romania. The USSR offered to send troops to Czechoslovakia in 1938 to prevent the Munich agreement, as they had a defense agreement with Czechoslovakia since 1935. Poland and Romania refused, and Poland itself partitioned part of Czechoslovakia with Germany.

In April 1941 at the commencement of the German Invasion of Yugoslavia, the eight T-32s were stationed in and around the Zemun airfield. However, the tanks were ordered south to the city of Niš in order to attack Axis forces advancing on the city

For its cheap price, this vehicle war very useful. But it should have been used as tank destroyer, as this was obviously the task in which it did well.

Agreed. For its point in time the 37mm was the standard anti tank gun. The wehrmacht was aware of the t-32 and semovente at this time. I wonder if the eastern front would have been more successful if a significant # of panzer IIs & t-38s were rebuilt as stugs.

Before tanks began to evolve with heavier armor and guns, That tankette with a 37mm gun with a well trained crew would have still been a viable battlefield weapon against the German armor of that time , maybe not as a main battlefield tank but in the tank destroyer role ,wait in ambush fire a few well aimed shots then retreat

Great video. One of the rare channels that make videos about Yugoslav army and equipment. I have never seen such a video with that much detail and dedication. Can you make a video about Yugoslav (SFRJ) tank projects after Vozilo A and Vozilo B. There were projects like M320, M628, M636 and M636D. There are a bit of information on the internet about them but not enough

Best tankette was the Japanese Type 97 Te-Ke. It had a 360 degrees rotating turret with a single machine gun or a 37mm tank gun.

A tankette by definition is any armoured vehicle armed with nothing but machineguns, the word being derived from the british "female" tanks which were just that. Anything armed with a gun that's bigger than a 20mm would be considered a full tank or in this case more likely a self propelled gun because the lack of a turret.

@@flatheadgg2443 That does make some sense for weapon calibers, however "ette" can also define a smaller size version of something, such as a "cigar" and "cigarette", or "kitchen" and "kitchenette".

@@lucius6667 Yes, but again, there are just too few survivors, and the initial production was only 9 vechicles. I suspect the engine parts and especialy suspension/transmition, did not allow for this - no spares available, except those found in situ. Ammo would be no problem, I suspect, as Germans ha denough Checkoslovakian light tanks with same cannon. It was simply not worth it , to keep 1 or 2 vechicles running, when there were enough FTs, R35s and H35 to arm anti partisan units with.
