16:29 to also show Sam Raimi’s fan of other artists, the “magic” words, “Klaatu barada nikto” in this scene originally came from the 1951 film, The Day the Earth Stood Still: in it, the words are used as the command words over an Alien robot named Gort, and used by the film’s protagonist, Klatuu, an alien who visit Earth…

Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert were still involved in the making of the newer movies. They actually spent the last few years writing out an Evil Dead "bible", which will explain the lore of the ED universe, including ideas for further stories, and describes how the Necromomicon and Deadites function (for future filmakers to refer to), so they can keep the franchise going forever and remain true to the original creative team's vision. I highly recommend checking out the Ash vs Evil Dead tv show, which is an excellent continuation of the story.

I'm sure others have likely commented upon this, but it's clear our CinneBringe duo did not get the reference concerning "Klaatu Barada Nikto". It is a line from the 1951 science fiction classic, "The Day the Earth Stood Still". In that film, a benign space visitor named Klaatu cautions those words must be spoken to his looming robot Gort lest the mechanoid destroy the planet. The phrase was well known to sci-fi film fans over the decades but pretty much forgotten by general audiences, at least before the rise of the internet. When I saw this film (during its initial theatrical release), I immediately caught the "nod and a wink" and so I burst out laughing and gave a slow clap. Apparently nobody else in the theater seat "got it" and a good many heads turned in my direction, likely thinking, "What's with this idiot?!" 🤔

George absolutely called it -- Peter Jackson is on record as a huge Sam Raimi fan, and you can definitely draw a direct line between the final battle here and the battle of Helm's Deep. Of course the influence goes both ways, because Raimi clearly drew a lot of inspiration from Tolkien in the way the battle is structured here. If you've never seen Dead Alive and wanna see what's basically young Peter Jackson's love letter to Evil Dead 2, it's wild and certainly worth a watch. Great reaction as always.

29:00 Rob Tapert is married to Lucy Lawless... *Xena Warrior Princess* (Bruce Campbell was in that TV series.) Lucy Lawless is in the TV series *Ash vs The Evil Dead.* Those 3 guys have been together since the beginning: Raimi, Tapert, and Campbell.

Yes, this is the origin of "Boomstick" The line "Gimme some sugar baby" was written by Sam Rami just before filming the scene. "klaatu barada nikto" is a reference to the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still"

From what Bruce has said in recent interviews (which could be argued as retconning) the next 2 films do take place in the same universe as the 1st 3, as they follow stories connected to the other 2 Books of the Dead that we see in Army of Darkness

Regardless of whether you do reactions or not, you have to watch the series Ash vs Evil Dead, it's the best aspect of all the movies, blended up into a brilliant show, with a great cast! Also, based on both of your reactions, you would absolutely love his series, Jack of All Trades, great cast and a brilliant and hilariously inappropriate guest star along the way, you'll be laughing and having a blast with just the opening song! His other series, with an even more impressive cast, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., with both series you'll be laughing your asses off! And lastly, the incredibly meta film, My Name is Bruce, which is chalked full of Evil Dead references.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend the TV series he did shortly after this movie, "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.". It tragically only went one season, but it wraps up its main arc, so it's fairly satisfying on the plot front. But the stories and characters are so much fun. It's a combination of western, sci-fi, comedy, and romance. John Astin plays a mildly-mad scientist who allies with Bruce's title character, and there are some other faces you might recognize. Even if you don't add it to your reactions list, I definitely recommend watching it.

I could not have told you it was only one season. I thought for sure it was at least two. Any time I see Billy Drago in another movie which isn't often I remember him being John Bly. I really wish that they had got into the story line that started with him at the end of the season but, oh well.
@stevensauer8539

@parker469a It seems like more than one because there were (I think) 27 episodes in the season. I don't want to say too much about the plot - what I was glad they wrapped up, what I would have looked forward to in season 2 - in case they react to it. Or even just decide to watch it. But then pretty much everything's okay as long as nobody touches Pete's piece. 😁

WHOAH. When Ash is making gunpowder and he stops the priest bringing the candle over it, I'm pretty sure Peter Jackson referenced that in The Two Towers when Wormtongue does the same thing with Saruman's Gunpowder Bomb and Saruman also stops his hand with the candle. Jackson and Raimi have similar roots and styles so i don't think that's a coincidence

The healthy amount of one liners in this film is outrageous. The effects, the comedy, the camera work, all of it comes together so well to give you this fun horror action comedy that has instant rewatch ability. I saw this as a kid and it’s one of my classic favorites. Hail to the king baby!was referenced in Duke Nukem, a computer FPS. Duke would often say it when picking up a new weapon. Honestly, my favorite thing to do is pick up a power drill spin it twice and say “ Groovy”

As many have explained, the next thing in the original Evil Dead universe is "Ash vs. Evil Dead," the TV show, in which Campbell returns as Ash. Raimi directed the pilot. The one interesting quirk about it is that the studio that produced the show (Starz/Lionsgate) did not have the rights to this movie, the one produced by a major studio (Universal), so the show has to sort of fudge that information even though the audience knows it's supposed to have happened. The version you've watched is the US theatrical version, which was heavily edited (albeit with Raimi's involvement). In the original ending, Ash is supposed to take a certain number of drops of a liquid and he will sleep until he awakens in his own time. He takes the wrong number of drops and wakes up in a post-apocalyptic future. There was also a bunch of material from the final battle that was removed, as well as some other little odds and ends throughout the movie. One scene that is hard to understand in any version is when he runs into the mirror. In the original full scene, he is spooked by a sound outside the windmill and goes out to investigate. He discovers it was his horse, but when he turns around to look back at the windmill, he sees himself inside. He runs full-speed back into the windmill and crashes into the mirror. It's still pretty ridiculous, but it certainly makes a bit more sense. Also, they cut out a whole round of gags with the mini-Ashes, so the cut to from him being on the grill to being covered in soot is a fudge, what happens is he keeps banging his head on a pipe until he finally gets mad and busts it open, covering him in the soot. Awhile ago (I think it was Donnie Darko) you asked what a good definition of a cult film would be. I'm sure you received a fairly straightforward definition then about a movie that built a small but devoted audience over time, but I also think George's experience watching this feels like its own evidence of a cult movie. A cult movie is like a beloved gem you want to show your friends and sort of join this little club of people who like it, and I think a great bit of evidence of that in the world is when people have all drawn from it, and then you're seeing all of the disparate art and content that it influenced.

Of course "Klatuu Barada Nikto" is the phrase Patricia Neal has to remember to save the earth in "Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951), one of the greatest sci-fi movies. This movie is like "Evil Dead" as reenacted by the Three Stooges. The TV series "Ash Vs Evil Dead" is as good as this.

"Trapped in time, surrounded by evil, low on gas." He was low or out of gas, which is why he replaced his chainsaw with a mechanical hand and retrofitted the car with a steam engine. BTW, the hand is less unrealistic than some might think. Götz von Berlichingen (1480-1562) had a similar replacement and was also known as 'Götz of the Iron Hand'.

Years ago I met Bruce Campbell at his book signing, but the funniest part was all the people dressed up in line from his various fandoms: college aged folks in Deadite zombie outfits, little kids in Brisco County Jr. cowboy outfits, and a few of Xena fans in the green Autolycus outfit. All of them chatting and laughing and having just the best damn time. :)

Robert Tappert was one of the Producers of Xena: Warrior Princess, and the Legend of Hercules. The guy at the end of this movie back as S Mart had a recurring role in those shows and is Sam Rami's brother. It's also worth noting that Rami did Spiderman 2 (Toby McGuire) and Multiverse of Madness. The latter REALLY draws elements from this.

The thing about this movie is that not many people know the original ending. Instead of just riding away and expecting everything goes as planned, it’s ash…it never goes as planned. You see him go to the cave that he’ll be sleeping in due to the potion. They tell him how many drops to take to land him in his correct timeline, but- ash being ash- gets distracted and in turn, miscounts and adds like an extra drop or two. Time passes and he wakes up with a full beard and all grimed up. He then makes his way out of the cave excited to be back in his own time only to find out the world is in ruins and all of civilization in chaos and in flames and then the movie just ends with him just screaming “Nooo!! I’ve slept too much!!” I think that was a great, hilarious ending but the production company thought it was too dark lol

Fun Fact: Klaatu Barada Nikto is from the SciFi film The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) Edmund H. North, who wrote The Day the Earth Stood Still, also created the alien language used in the film, including the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto". The official spelling of the phrase comes directly from the script. Near the end of the film, as Klaatu is pursued by the U.S. Armed Forces, he urges Helen Benson to memorize the phrase, saying "There's no limit to what he can do. He could destroy the Earth... If anything should happen to me, you must go to Gort; you must say these words: 'Klaatu barada nikto.' Please repeat that."

I think they were watching the US Theatrical version. The endings are different and there are some slight differences when Ash is fighting the miniature Ashes and the clone. The US version has the line, "Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun". I think the international version has Ash saying, "I'm not that good" but I could be wrong. I like both endings but enjoy the US version with the shootout in S-MART more. 😀 According to Google there are actually 4 cuts of this movie. The two I've already mentioned. A longer director's cut and a slightly longer cut of the US version that was for tv.

that car is in every Sam Raimi film, it belonged to his grandmother (or mother, I forget). It was Aunt May's car in all 3 Spider-Man films. Boomstick does come from this film and "Groovy" and "Hail to the King Baby" were used in Duke Nukem I remember being at a convention in Las Vegas and Bruce was setting up by himself to sign autographs and my brother and I timidly walked up and asked for a picture and he said "yeah whatever" and just kept doing what he was doing. He didn't look up, but my brother posed with a thumbs up and that was the end of that lol

26:43 - "Did you say the words right this time?" - Ted Raimi, brother of Sam Raimi. Also the guy who was in the Henrietta suit in the second movie. BTW, the three words he needed to say, "Klatuu, barada, nikto" , come from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). The 2013 movie as well as the more recent one, are straight horror, and apparently set in a different continuity than the original movies. Ash vs. Evil Dead is MUCH more comedic. It has elements of horror, but the entire show is over the top craziness. Also, since Army of Darkness was a studio production, they didn't have the rights to use any footage from it, or even reference the events of it.

I was going to bring this up when i noticed them bring the car up. I first wondered if Sam used the same car back when i watched spider Man. It was then verified when i read Bruce Campbell's biography If Chins Could Kill. The book has a funny story about it's appearance on spider Man. Apparently it no longer ran, but a part of the movie budget went up shipping it to set and rigging ways to pull it around during scenes.
