In a remarkable transformation, Leslie King, an Army veteran, nurse, and mother of four, shed more than 175 pounds since undergoing bariatric surgery at Mount Carmel Health System in the fall of 2022.
Leslie, who had spent most of her life grappling with weight issues, made the life-altering decision to pursue bariatric surgery at the age of 40. Fueled by a desire to be a more active and healthier mother for her children, Leslie, then weighing 336 pounds, sought treatment at Mount Carmel Health System.
Dr. Chaz Dabbs, a bariatric surgeon at Mount Carmel, explained that surgery goes beyond weight loss. It aims to address and treat obesity-related diseases such as type two diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnea.
Leslie's actively participated in support groups and conducted extensive research to prepare herself. She emphasized the importance of a strong support system and knowledge base in making dietary choices.
Dr. Chaz highlighted that anyone with a BMI greater than 40 or a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with obesity-related comorbid conditions is considered a good candidate for bariatric surgery. Stressing the broader health benefits, he emphasized the surgery's role in reducing the risk of life-threatening weight-related health problems.
Leslie's story is not just about physical success; it's also a mental triumph. Having lost more than 175 pounds, Leslie has become an advocate for herself, echoing the importance of self-advocacy and prioritizing one's well-being.
Since her surgery, Leslie has embraced a newfound love for running and is currently training for the Cap City Half Marathon in the spring. She encourages others to consider bariatric surgery as a viable option for improving their health, emphasizing the importance of self-research and seeking professional advice.
Her message to those considering bariatric surgery is clear: "Don't get discouraged by people who don't believe in it. Do your research. If anything, just get in an appointment with one of the surgeons and have a sit-down talk. Making yourself a priority is not selfish. It's important; we have a future to live."
