Chiari 1 defect allowing cerebellar tonsils to herniate through base of skull (Foramen Magnum) Trauma causes additional swelling of brain which exacerbates the compression at the foramen. Emergency decompression by removing the upper cervical posterior laminae and portions of the Foramen Magnum rim. Consequently, the left cerebellar tonsil was also removed to further decompress brain stem.

Just had this surgery done 3 days ago and I highly recommend it. The videos look bad but you're asleep and don't see any of it anyway. If your symptoms are bad enough then the surgery is totally worth it. I am home and feel great

I had my surgery 4 years ago. it took me 2.5 years to get a diagnosis, my neurosurgeon told me the day of diagnosis that for me surgery was my best bet because mine was so bad. scheduled surgery for 4 weeks later. was in hospital for 1.5 weeks, 2-3 days in ICU. I have to say my symptoms have actually gotten worse over the years.

ronald pauwels Hello, My name is Lindsey and I’m 26 now but had Chiari cranial decompression and cervical stabilization surgery in High School. Only you and your doctor can decide what’s best, but my personal advice would be to use surgery as a very last resort (avoid it if you can)!! There are many possible complications and residual issues that can occur because of the procedures (which I unfortunately experienced), so I would suggest that you proceed with extreme caution. I had the surgery about 10 years ago, and my headaches are worse now then they were originally. Again, it’s different for everyone, and I had compilations, but I just want you to be aware that the surgery is not necessarily a “magical fix”. I wish you the best of luck and health! (Also, following some nerve blocks, I’ve recently gotten cervical nerve ablations that are really helping with my head pain and are MUCH less invasive than the decompression surgery; maybe ask your doctor if this is a route you could also try?)

I played soccer and was a ballerina. My mom tried to keep me in a bubble lol. When I woke up I couldn't walk or feel my legs. I learned how to walk again though I do have a right foot drop. Stay on top of this disease cuz it's unforgiving. My mom who is a nurse and a narcissist ignored me and the cyst on my spine took hold and now I'm paralyzed In my right hand. Myself, along with most other Chiari patients that I know, had a cervical stabilization surgery at the same time as the decompression. I was fused occipital to C5 to stabilize my already unstable neck. Ehlers Danlos, a connective disorder, is common with Chiari patients; I used to be like a Pez dispenser and could practically bend my neck backward to the point where the back of my head was flat against my back!

Khalid Bouallali After placing rods to stabilize my cervical spine, my doctor also applied BMP (Bone Morphogenetic Protein). BMP is a cream that actually grows into bone. When my body rejected my rods (and I literally ended up with a screw loose in my head-I’ll never live that one down!😂), I was able to get my hardware removed since the BMP had assisted my body in growing my own bone and fusing my cervical spine that way! It’s pretty badass! ;) haha (What’s even cooler is that I have all of my rods and screws that used to be in my head in a bucket at home-they let me keep it after they took it all out!)

Everyone's different, some have CM without symptoms. Others have headaches, from manageable to debilitating. Some, like me, begin losing sensations, cannot walk, bowel and bladder problems, etc... As it progresses. I lived with "just headaches" (and other things I took as normal but were CM related) for as long as possible. Do surgery when you've exhausted all other options for any quality of life.
