Aronia melanocarpa ("black chokeberry") is a hardy perennial shrub that produces loads of berries filled with antioxidants! They are very easy to grow, and have great fall foliage color on top of it all. Plant an aronia shrub in your yard and start exploring all the great ways to use these excellent, underappreciated fruits. We offer both seedlings and named cultivars propagated from cuttings: www.burntridge...

Aronias produce a ton of fruit with minimal care. Beautiful leaves, flowers, and berries. The berries freeze well, produce a respectable pie, and are good in smoothies. If you have a tendency to get kidney stones, be aware that the berries are high in oxalic acid.

I have one that grew as a volunteer! I take care to keep it covered with fine netting in the spring when it's starting to leaf out and then flower - the deer will trim out down extensively otherwise and the crop will be severely diminished. I also sprayed it with liquid fence every week or two throughout the summer just in case the deer thought it might be yummy. It's very drought tolerant. I did dump a couple buckets of water on it when the berries started to change color. It's one of the easiest and thriftiest berry producers there is.

I just started sowing in milk jugs so they can sprout come spring. I'm trying out ten seeds. I'll be thrilled if I get 5 or 6 germinated.

Great video!! I have terrible soil, Sandy clay. I have 2 plants, one did very well, but the other had much smallerberries. I made jelly with them. I didn't know i could leave it on the plant longer to get sweeter. I will do that next year. What advice do you have on fertilizing them?

Most Aronia cultivars (Viking, Nero, Hugin, Aron, ...) actually belong to the species Aronia mitschurinii. A. mitschurinii is a cross between Aronia melanocarpa & Sorbus aucuparia and expresses high apomixis: If these cultivars are propagated by seed, one can practically guarantee the same characteristics in their children. I am not very sure about the following, but I think A. melanocarpa looks quite different (less like Sorbus) and is not astringent. 'Aronia in America' has an enlightening article about this subject.

Wonderful information on an amazing plant! Side note: whomever is walking in the back ground with the mask really needs to breathe the fresh air instead of all the waste CO2 the mask holds.

lol ... co2 is virtually 3.2% whichis wayyyy less than what you think. u can breath your own air for almost 30 times before you run out of oxygen in it. still co2 is not going to be an issue

We have 3 bushes and many deer in the area. Have not had any trouble with deer. The turkeys love the berries if we leave them on the bushes!!! When we harvest we take 1/2 and leave 1/2 for the birds all winter!

Does melano carpa mean Black Body?
@burntridgenursery591
@burntridgenursery591 Жыл бұрын
Something like that - probably more like "dark fruit" - carpa usually refers to fruit/seed, as opposed to corpus (body) but I never studied Latin formally, only in the context of botany :)
