Outstanding reportage ...The G.G.R is in fact not a race but a endurance test of your skipper talents.. This is not "cruising" .. this is the real stuff.. Not many females have entered, Susie Goodall unfortunately in the 2018 G.G.R pitchpoled and had to abandon het boat. A stupid knot in her sea anchor drogue set up failed and there she went. Luck is also a big factor in these kind of events.. In fact all who set sail in the G.G.R are winners..Furlers are being tested and as proven by Mark Slats, a hank on head sail setup still seems to be the way to go for such an endurance Kirsten sailed the Pelagic boats for Skip Novak.. Don't forget to also check into "Seas & Summits" where Chris and Sophie also did a lot of skippering the Pelagic Australis for Novak..Their videos are outstanding .. These Antarctic adventures involves some real rough weather sailing and skipper talents.. Maya this was an outstanding "production" with Kirsten.. I am sure once released, Don McIntyre will ask you whether he can link it in his G.G.R website.. Job well done..

Great comment. I should have read it before posting mine, because I too added in information about Chris and Sophie. It seems that Skip Novak only 'mans' his boats with the best of Captains, because the seas that these guys have sailed in, in the southern ocean, were monstrous and in some cases downright frightening. When an 80 something foot boat looks like a dinky toy compared to the waves/swell, you know you are being tested by nature. And they all did it with composure, calmness and determination. Their skill levels are off the charts!

I met Kirsten 2 times when she was here in Newfoundland and PEI / Nova Scotia. When you look at the specifications and compare it to the other entrant boats then She has a faster boat! Kirsten is incredibly well motivated, and she and Eddy Arseneaut have done a superb job on getting the boat ready for the race. I think It is her race to lose, she has the fastest and best boat for the GGR race. If she has no bad luck- then Kirsten will win! Thanks for interviewing her. All the best Kirsten.

Thanks for posting this -- I first watched this around the start of the GGR, and at that time I'd never heard of Kirsten Neuschafer... but following the GGR now (nearly everyday), I've gotten to know Cap', Gugg, Simon, Kirsten, Jeremy and others... Kirsten's story is particularly educating... one thing is clear, as unassuming as she sounds, she believes in thorough preparation ... probably a lesson there somewhere...

We made a circumnavigation with a sextant and Casio watch in the 1980s. The British Admiralty charts were dated, and the electronic navigation makes the voyage much safer. I wish you luck, hopefully you enjoy lack of sleep, spending your time navigating. The upside is you are using a Hydrovane, being the best crew on the planet.
@philipclements8927
@philipclements8927 2 жыл бұрын
I have had both Hydrovane and Aries - Aries is hands down the best!! Did you notice how Kirsten still had to lash the tiller with Hydrovane, that won't work with a fin keeler for long, especially in heavy going, if at all. I have had both fin and long keel boats. Aries steered no matter what the conditions, never had to lash the tiller...!
@rainfinger
@rainfinger 2 жыл бұрын
@@philipclements8927 We have never had an Aries, but the Hydrovane served as a spare rudder when we grounded in North Sumatra, allowing us to sail 500 miles to Singapore for repairs. What you say is true that the tiller must to lashed down with Hydrovane, because it has its own rudder. One thing I would like to add is the Hydrovane steered flawlessly in light air crossing the doldrums and in storm conditions in the North Sea. I guess at the end of the day each sailing master much make their own informed decision. I wish you well in your adventures. We are sailing to Bermuda and the Azores next week.

Wow! What a great challenge and this woman is one heck of a sailor. I hope she wins also, which will be good for you guys too, knowing that your boat has some thoroughbred in her. I'm no engineer, but have to agree with her appraisal of the heavier boat being able to handle the heavier workload and seas. A couple I have been watching for a while is SEAS & SUMMITS - Sophie & Chris, who also sailed for Skip Novak for some years. They recently delivered Pelagic Australis, the bigger boat, to the Netherlands I think, because Skip sold it. These guys were the only 2 on board sailing this big boat in the southern ocean, then up to Europe. They met as captains in round the world ocean racing boats, both extremely talented sailors. They spend a lot of time training round the world sailors, which is what Chris is still doing at the moment, while Sophie is taking on a bigger challenge with caring for their new born son. I admire these men and women, such as Kirsten who do things I would never dream of doing. They are true pioneers into realms where most men and women never go and they deserve the rewards that they get from these adventures, which are mostly private and personal, and often not financial. Good luck Kirsten, may you blitz the field in your Cape George 36 and show the world that a heavy bus can do just as good as a thoroughbred racer.

When the first GPS arrived in the late 1970's, the unit was the size of a large microwave oven. Once installed, the beast would occasionally beep around every 90 minutes on satellite acquisition. It would spend the next 10 to 12 minutes tracking the single satellite, one of only 8 in low earth polar orbit and then, after another 15 to 20 minutes later, it would beep again to show a fix - a single latitude and longitude readout. It did occasionally say "bad fix". So new was this technology that it had a company notice fixed to the front ......... "NOT to be used for navigation". It did however provide an element of fun seeing who could get the closest fix three times each day to the "magic box". The old ways of navigation are an art, the way it was done for hundreds of years and I would recommend anyone to learn, but most of all, enjoy this almost ancient art - you never know when you may need it. Now if only I'd had an iPhone 12 back in the 1970's ............. 😁😁😁

I also followed the first GGR and was lucky enough to be in Falmouth when all the boats gathered before the start to race to France. It was so exciting to see them on the dock, not knowing what was in store in such an epic race. I was a race groupie hanging out on the dock getting my cap signed by all the skippers. My favourites were Suzie, Tomy and captain Coconut and Coconut only just finished! The other entrants all have epic stories and adventures. I will be following along again and Kristen will have a cheer squad here! Thanks for the video, you are doing an amazing job.
