Hello everyone. I'm sharing this section/chapter of the Push Bible, which covers how Push can be used successfully with both Session and Arrangement view to arrange songs, and also add layers of complexity to them.
Push is often considered as mostly useful for Session View, but there are some ways it can really help make tracks faster, both through its inherent limitations, but also through some extra tips and tricks that I'll show you.
If you'd like to watch the second part of the section, please go to wrkshp.thinkific.com
This tutorial and course will be online for a limited time. It's also part of the complete Push Bible, and can be followed by Beginner and Intermediate level students.
Hope you're doing well out there,
Andri

I’ve been making music since 2000 and have never released a single track. I’ve owned the Push 1 and never used it. I owned several hardware synths over the years, only to then decide to remove myself of all of the clutter and have one focus piece of kit. Ableton has been my DAW for at least 12 years and I now know it’s time for me to simply focus on it instead of a room full of synthesizers. I got the Push 2 now and am ready to finish the hundreds of ideas I’ve created over the years. I’ve got a lot of hard drives to dig through and begin finishing some tracks. I have no ambition to be famous lol. I’m 40 and partake in the festivities that usually come with the electronic scene anymore, so I just want to make music and put tracks out for others to listen to and enjoy. I look forward to digging into your tutorials!

This is a beautiful story Justin, thank you for sharing so openly! I wholeheartedly believe in focus and doing more with less, although this is of course a very personal thing, and a question which touches upon who we are and which workflows work for us. Trying them all out (synth cave / push + live / batcave) is sometimes key to finding out. Good luck, and let us know how it goes, and I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have in the course.

Just viewed this fantastic tutorial. I am a retired musician (68 yrs old), still like to create and make music to enjoy. As stated below by one of the comments, I am not looking to make it big in music as over the years have had my fair share of tours and road travels. Currently using the Ableton Live Suite and also the Push 2. Have been working off and on with the Push 2 unit and most of it was hit and miss. This tutorial provided me with direction and insight of how the unit works with Ableton. Thank you Andri for this great instruction. Look forward to more tutorials.

User mapping (especially momentary!!) removes the only questions holding me back from buying Push, thank you! For years I've had a custom transport scheme including return to arrangement mapped to the drum pads on my SL MKII, as I use both views in performance. Still stuck between upgrading to Push 2 or the SL MKIII, but this makes Push look even more enticing.

I already have arrangement laid out and ready to record but i want to play some melodies over it but it neeeds to be recorded. Only workaround i found was to record master track, but that way i have only single WAV file. Sorry for a lenghty question and thanks!

Hey Canu, good question! You could explore recording each midi track into a separate audio track. It’s not ideal because when you stop payback or recording it will stop recording clips to these tracks, but it’s an option. Feel free to join the full (free) course on arrangement on WRKSHP.eu and we can discuss more over there if you have any other questions.

Great video Andri! I'm trying to get my head around Session view, Maschine is my thing... I can't figure out how people work around the fact that you can't start in the middle of an 8 bar clip (to edit the MIDI for example) and have the other clips NOT start at zero. It makes it impossible to hear your edits without starting the entire scene over again. How do people get around this? I also hate the fact that there is no shift-start on the Push2...

I live in session view, my brain is really chaotic & scattered so session works for me, but sometimes i like to bring stuff to arrangement view, the problem with back to session/arrangement orange button, is it doesn't pick back where you left off in session mode, it stops all clips, and if you're unorganized and choatic, remembering which clips were active can be a disaster. is there anyway around this. and i know it's a pipe dream but does anyone know how to automate the solo button. everyone always tries to give me the just mute everything else work around, but that doesn't work the same and effects all my sidechains and delays where solo drops, glue everything together

@AndriSoren
@AndriSoren Жыл бұрын
It’s an excellent question, and I have to start by saying that it’s quite difficult for me to answer, but here’s a question that will help; Are you comfortable using technology / computers in general? If yes, then buying Push is absolutely worth considering, and I think the majority of people in your situation would find it a nice entry point to learning how to make music. That said, and if you’d like to be a bit more sure if making music with computers and software is for you, I would suggest the following; 1) try some free music making apps on your phone or tablet (or computer) to get a feel of their potential as well as limitations. 2) Check some of the KZfaq channels that compare daw (digital audio workstation) software - there are some good comparisons out there. 3) Check resources like Ableton’s “learning music” on their website. It’s free and a good introduction to some concepts. learningmusic.ableton.com/ 3) Try downloading the free trial version of different DAW software, such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic, and others. Don’t download them all at once maybe as many are limited to 30 days. Get a feel of how they work, their logic, and how they feel. 4) Buy or borrow some budget or second hand MIDI controllers like those from Korg (nano range) or a novation launchpad (or even second hand Push 1 or 2) and see how it feels using them to make music. They will help guide you towards knowing what you want to use. Most of all listen to what feels right, and what you enjoy. Making music should be fun, and yet it can often be frustrating. Keep coming back to the parts that are fun, and slowly but surely you’ll grow, learn, and music will become a friend.

I own a push 2 and the workflow with scenes and clips is garbage. Follow actions are useless. They need to release a feature that is just like the mpc song mode so that people can simply arrange a whole beat in 10 seconds and export the inputted arrangement to the arrangement view without having record and mess around and waste so much time with all that other bs. The fact that something like that doesn't exist yet in Ableton blows my mind.
@AndriSoren
@AndriSoren 3 жыл бұрын
Graphwize there’s definitely room for improvement and added features. In Live 11, scenes can now use follow actions, which mitigates that somewhat, but to use them you do need to step into Live and away from Push. In any case, I couldn’t agree more that workflow is everything, and that ideally we’d combine the beat features out there in one place.

@@joshraab6808 I see now you were responding to Graphwize :) Good point. As you’re pointing out, there is often more than one way of doing something in Live. Push + Live sometimes can indeed slow down certain processes, but at the same time open up a different workflow, one where we’re not moving between mouse and keyboard and multiple controllers, and that opens up a different mindset or feel. There are definitely some gaps in certain workflows however, and I suppose that’s what graphwize was touching upon.
