A 9th grader charged with assault for a spitball. A 12 year old sentenced to life in prison. These are the types of cases that Elizabeth Cauffman has focused her career on. She asks the fundamental question: are adolescents different from adults in ways that require different treatment under the law? In her talk, Elizabeth discusses how we can approach this question in a matter that is fair within our society.
Elizabeth Cauffman is a Professor and Chancellor's Fellow in the Department of Psychology and Social Behavior in the School of Social Ecology and holds courtesy appointments in the School of Education and the School of Law. Dr. Cauffman's research addresses the intersect between adolescent development and juvenile justice. She has published over 100 articles, chapters and books on a range of topics in the study of contemporary adolescence, including adolescent brain development, risk-taking and decision making, parent-adolescent relationships, and juvenile justice.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I would be really interested in the effect that intervention would have on juvenile offenders. What if instead of simply punishing children, we adjusted our efforts to consequences and intervention, such as impulse control intervention.

Rehabilitation and learning of skills is what the juvenile system is supposed to be about. Supposed to.

I should think arrested development should be considered in rehabilitation. Is it assumed to correct on its own?

Her name is Dr. Elizabeth Cauffman. I worked with her for many years here in Pennsylvania. She has been at UCIrivine in California for the last 15 yrs +. She is amazing about making analogies in Lehmann terms to help understand the research. I miss her dearly but she still has made great strides in the field of Juvenile Justice. ~Nicole Remsburg

I totally agree with what she said. Unfortunately the prison system has a large minority group. Her insight would state that the 9% persistent offenders would be minority. Now I have to question how was the data was collected.

Prune a rose bush? Detours? Dirt road? Coming into it's own? Additionally your stats are not of biological significance. Offenders become more discrete they don't stop. Worthless products of an enslaving society remain worthless but measured on differing scales.

@@TrailVapor Your response is confusing to me. I'll give it to you that the analogies may not connect with everyone. But, her stats have a lot of significance in understanding some human behavior, and I'm not sure what you mean by "worthless products of an enslaving society remain worthless but measured on differing scales."

@@TrailVapor How are the "stats not of biological significance"? How is even one child being legally murdered not considered biologically significant?
