Arriving in the Philippines (on a trip to the Philippines for the first time), and not knowing the answer to the question "Is the Philippines for you?" can cause anxiety, and a list of do's and don'ts in the Philippines would be a big help! Not having a Philippines travel guide can make this difficult, but you can explore the Philippines like a local with just a little helpful advice. What to do once in the Philippines? That's easy - watch this video and then just experience the Philippines for the first time!‪@TheFilipinaPea‬

When first arriving in the P.I. at the airport, Tip 1) Get some pesos at an ATM in the airport. You're guaranteed an ATM at the airport - who knows if there will be one near your hotel. Tip 2) When getting into a cab do NOT let the driver put your luggage in the trunk. Hold onto it and put it into the seat with you. If your stuff is in the trunk it gives the driver more power to scam you, or to just steal it. If your stuff is in the trunk, and the driver decides to not use the meter, you no longer have the ability to hop out. Or, when you arrive at your destination, and the driver wants to charge you extra he can hold your luggage hostage until you pay up.

I got scammed by cab drivers a couple of times. The funny thing is, in the Philippines their idea of scamming you is to charge you an extra 100 pesos. I just didn't care.

On tip 1: I never depend on ATM's. The ATM can eat your card. The ATM can be out of money or jammed up. May I suggest the advance purchase of the peso, or other, from your home town bank. The exchange rate will be very close to the ATM.

You covered everything pretty well. The only thing I would add is that to always carry small small bills. The trike drivers like to say they don’t have change. Don’t get me wrong I almost always give tips but it should be by choice not by scam.

Always get in the habit of using bigger bills at bigger stores (even if you have the small ones as they typically will have change and others generally won't). Finding change can be a big problem so force yourself to think at each purchase location if you should use a bigger bill and hang onto the small change for when it is necessary or you will be leaving a large tip or passing on something you might have liked to have purchased.

Bills? I always pay for everything with 25 centavo coins. The look on the vendors' faces makes it well worth it. And it's super easy - barely an inconvenience. Plus, lending a maximum of 25 centavos, when I do loan out money, means I never lose sleep over a Pinay paying me back.

When arriving in a Philippine airport, I was surprised to find that the common locals are not allowed in the airport building to meet you. I waited for a couple of hours to meet my people before I decided to ask a guard about this problem. The guard explained that, anybody I would be meeting, would be outside. In the USA, it is common to meet your family or friends in the airport building rather than going outside to meet them. My Filipino friends were waiting for me to exit the airport building, while I was waiting to meet them in the airport building.

Just a few thoughts in no particular order - Exchange a little money at the airport when you arrive to cover ground transportation, but you can find better rates from local money exchangers than what you can usually get at the airport. - If you're uncomfortable traveling with large amounts of cash, you can always send money to yourself via wire transfer services. There are thousands of locations to pick it up at. - Do not accept food from strangers, especially on the street or from cab drivers. - If someone asks you "...is this your first time in the Philippines?" the answer is always "no", even if it really is. - Dink bottled water only! - Bring Imodium (or comparable), better safe than sorry. Make sure the bottle is new and still sealed, easier to get through customs that way. - Do not sleep for 24 hours prior to your take-off time. It will be easier to sleep on the plane and your body will readjust to the local time without so much jet lag. - Learn to ride the Jeepney. It's cheaper than the trike. - Always barter with local vendors or at the market. It is an acceptable practice and will demonstrate that you're not an easy mark for the "kano tax" - I always have some pamangkin (niece/nephew) with me when I go out. The tambay will never bother you if you are with other locals. - Don't expect your date to be "on time", just don't. It will never happen. - You're girlfriend really isn't thirsty and asking for water during sex (inside joke) 🤣

Another great video. I've only been in your country 3 times, but I agree with all you said. Going it on your own for a while is by far the best way, IMO. And using the picture of an item in a large store is the best way to find something - has worked for me (when the item exists). A friendly trike driver is more than happy to show up when you need a ride, if you get his number. I rarely drink, so it's easy for me to just say, "Sorry, I don't drink" when a friendly Filipino suggests getting a drink. And having lived many years in Asia and visited many countries, carrying toilet paper comes naturally now. All good advice, Miss Pea!

@@user-lj6gk4lv9s ffs, not everyone is a well off tourist or a wealthy pensioner. Just imagine the rage over racism if any western country tried that crap. It also really screws up western tourguides (the ones that actually know stuff) as they have to pay the extortionate fees too every time. Not only that, ffs, the people doing the fleecing are most often ultimately government departments or big private companies, neither of them are helping the poor. As for the open markets I avoid the high prices simply because my wife does the shopping. As a local she also finds the national sport of fleecing foreigners bloody annoying too, ffs. Did you know Switzerland is a third world country? "Third world" doesn't mean what you appear to think it means. ffs.

@@TheFilipinaPea In 2007 I had no trouble using ATM's in the Mall in Butuan. The ATM at the local bank in the small town nearest to her village was for their own customers only. No other bank's cards were accepted. Also be sure to advise your US Bank that you'd be traveling to PI, Otherwise their fraud detection program might lock your ATM card. Mine did on one trip. I carried only new $100 bills. I found a restaurant which had a lot of expat customers that was happy to exchange $ to pesos, and not at a rip off rate.

I live in Peru, South America (American Expat) and it is amazing how close the advice matches here as well. Something to add is to buy an unlocked smartphone and bring it with you and buy a chip and recharge/load the chip there for use around the areas you travel to. Your American phone will likely not work for anything there except at a wi-fi hotspot. If you get a phone with hotspot capabilities, you can use it with your US phone as its internet source. (for those that don't know, and I didn't, most people have a prepaid chip in their phone and they recharge it as they need more minutes or internet. Here it is a recharge "recarga" but there I believe it is called a load - here many stores and almost all pharmacies offer this service and it is very cheap and I believe it is about the same around the Philippines as well.)

After living in the Philippines for a year or so, the advice I would give is... everything Pea said. I kept thinking about things and then she'd say it, just like she was reading my mind (I'm a little scared now). The biggest advice is at the beginning... have a Filipina guide. I took my first and only trip to the Phillipines in the late 70's when i was in the Army and stationed in Okinawa. I had heard good things about it when my room-mate was able to take a temporary Duty (TDY for you military types) on board the USS Blue Ridge which was docked in Oki, and then bound for Subic Bay and then return to Okinawa in two weeks. On arrival, I took a van from Clark AFB to the little hotel outside the gate, called the Plaridel Hotel. On the way, the van stopped and a bunch of girls got in and sat on everybody's laps. we then went to the hotal, and it was a very nice place, and the proprietor took very good care of the Americans who stayed there. My first night, I was settling in, as it was after midnight when the plane landed at Clark. I wanted so much to just go to sleep and start my visit in earnest the next day, but then there was a knock on the door, and oine of the bellhops asked me if I wanted a girl. I was stilla shy very virginal guy back then, so politely turned him down. Looking back I think I should have taken him up on it, not for the possible intimacy, but because most of the guys who had a girlfriend were protected from the riffraff that hung out around the hotel, looking for a gullible American traveling by himself. I found myself hit up constantly by men who wanted to take me on a "Guided Tour" of Angeles City, but I had already been warned to avoid these types becase while they would take a foreigner like me on a good guided tour and show me all the places to take good pictures, and the bars that had girls, etc, at the end of the day the poor GI would find that he owes $600 or so for their time. But they scrupulously avoided the guys who were accompanied by a gorgeous Filipina. I was also warned, though, to watch out for the girls too, because they all want to get married to a GI. So I wasn't sure who to trust unless it was a Tour Guide working for a reputable Tour Company . I ended up spending most of my time in Manila going on as many tours as I could, including Corregidor, and just enjoying myself solo. I'm really glad I got to go to Corregidor, though, because I took numerous pictures of the old gun emplacements, later on, they would take first prize in a US Army photo contest.

David. It's sad but the Philippines has slowly degraded. In the 80's strangers pinoys and pinays would say " Hey Joe" frequently. But in the 90's Filipinos stopped the friendly comment. Then after 2000 they quit all together saying Joe. Now people in Manila are just in one big rush. You would notice a drastic change since you haven't been their for so long. It was good and nice in the past meeting pinay but now it's turned into one big scam. Unless you have relatives or friends it is risky what goes on in the PI.

I’m really glad that I’m married to a Filipina and to have her and her family and my Filipino friends there for when we visited, that was very helpful. My experiences with them on our visit confirm everything you have to say each and every time you make a video about travelling there. They might not know everything about everywhere but I don’t think we could afford it even if they did. There’s just too much to do and see. Hopefully like you said, after the lockdown, if ever, we got to go back and experience some more. If you ever have a meet and greet for your fans I hope I am travelling there at that time to enjoy meeting you. All great tips. Two things I would add. On the currency, bring large denomination bills. I went with all twenties because I was use to Latin America, where smaller bills got better exchange rate. In the Philippines, you get better rates with larger bills, so hundreds are better. Second, bring your own sun screen. You can get an excessively large bottle in the US for half the price that a tiny tube costs in the Philippines.

This video should be at the top of your page Pea. The skin tax is a real thing. I once had to stop a Filipina that I was staying with from hitting a jeepney driver for driver for charging me 50 pesos for me and her. At that time (1985) that was only two US dollars but he should have only charged me 10 pesos for both of us. She was LIVID that he was charging me too much. I looked at it as that extra $1.50 would feed his family for a week so I was doing something charitable without being obvious.

This one thing saved my bacon more than once, especially in my early years there when I was the wild and crazy, most of the time drunk fool trying to live as if it was going to be my last day on earth, so go out with a bang. Living in small town America, I'd never even rode in one here. So, if you haven't covered it before, discussing taxi scams or arriving at the Manila airport would be great. When planning a trip, one of first things I do is googling the Manila Airport because the procedures for getting a taxi/Grab car just outside the doors at the airport can change.

Great advice Pea! I would add that before going to the Philippines I would suggest going online to some Filipino chat site and do some networking and make some Filipino friends of all types, genders and ages. If you feel you need a tour guide and your a male wanting to meet a lady to start a relationship with hire a male tour guide. That way you aren’t stuck in the situation the Pea described with a female tour guide. In addition if your what a Filipina or the Nanay’s feel is a catch they will bend over backwards to introduce you to a pretty Filipina from a good family and of good character. Second, never ask a Filipina a personal question about anything requiring a decision. Good luck getting a straight answer. Most Filipina’s will give you a passive aggressive response of “ It’s up to you” which means she expects you to guess and by god guess right and had better guess right or expect the evil miss Tampo to show up. It can drive you nuts. My advice is if you ask a Filipina a question like, where would you like to go for a date and she replies “I don’t know, it’s up to you”, is to do your best, take her someplace nice and pray like hell you guessed right and if you guessed wrong…don’t let it bother your sangfroid.

My two cents worth as a westerner who lived in the Philippines are make sure the taxi driver turns his meter on otherwise you will be asked for an outrageous fare at the end of your journey and a tip i learned about shopping - if you plan to buy anything expensive ask at where you're staying if they have any students staying who can help you shop - paying them to do the negotiations will save you more than what you pay them and help them out too

TIP: I have never been mugged, but I was once told: "should you ever be mugged, give them what they ask! once they leave just go in the opposite direction, no matter if your hotel is in that direction or not. just find a taxi tell the situation, and promise a big tip (and stand by it!) by having the taxi taking you back to your hotel, and get your cash and pay the driver"
@wayneholmes637

Yes but it doesn't always work. I rarely carry cash at all so if someone tries to mug me then there is a problem. They, thinking all whites are rich and have shed loads of cash on them, won't accept me saying no to their demands. As it isn't uncommon for muggers to kill the victim regardless, especially women and even children, then things can get nasty. Luckily for me I am a 190cm tall, 90kg heavy ex-soldier with years of training in Hapkido and Karate. They tend to be 160cm tall and at best 50kg with no kind of fighting experience at all outside of frightened people giving them stuff. So generally I am left alone, muggers without serious weapons won't go for a victim who might just beat them to a pulp. Crazy drug addicts are a different matter and need to be dealt with quickly if initial de-escalation had no effect at all.

@@wayneholmes637 great comment sir but i have to caution you. Even if you " beat them to a pulp" if they can find you you will most definitely face a problem. In the Phili if you beat someone, even if its for good reason. Youll be extorted for money to make the situation "go away". Just someone formally charging you with a crime mean you cant leave the Phili until the case is solved which could take months or even years. Your best bet is to be humble. Not to the point youll allow someone disrespect you but humble all the same. Never try solve problems with your fist. Be the grey man. As soon as a situation starts excuse yourself quickly and leave.
@wayneholmes637
@wayneholmes637 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ron-oe7hg yes I know. The white man being "rich" is guilty by default as he is the only one they ("they" meaning everyone involved who isn't you) can/will try to squeeze money out of you. Luckily the police are poorly trained, unmotivated and by western standards utterly pathetic. You just need to make the most of that fact. If things were caught on camera then they have hard time blaming you but that is rare. If it isn't caught on camera and there are no witnesses around then deal with the situation appropriately i.e. do what the criminals usually successfully do and make sure the mugger/druggie won't ever try to take you to court. Sounds harsh but life is cheap in asia. Maybe Pea should make a video warning those that don't know already how risky defending yourself in asian countries is, especially the poorer and more corrupt ones.

Question: Where does one keep the cash (up to $10k) they might bring in, if not in a bank account?
@KutWrite
@KutWrite 3 жыл бұрын
...I'm wondering how to get it out of the US. The TSA assumes anything over $5k (and maybe less) is for drugs and confiscates it. People have even had expensive rings taken on the spot.

There's no reason to travel there with that much cash. I'd recommend bringing between $1,000 to $2,000 in 100s, and inform your bank & credit card company of your travel plans. Plan to be in a city to use an ATM before your cash runs out. I travel with a belt that has a hidden zippered pocket in which I can carry my extra large bills. Don't trust hotel safes for keeping cash - hotel staff know the master code to open them. Bring two credit cards and keep them separate in case you lose one. Secure your pants pockets and backpack pockets with safety pins to discourage sneaky fingers (you can use nail polish to paint the safety pins the same color as the fabric to make them blend in better).

@@KutWrite You are referring to TSA being “Thieves staying active” right? I rank them down at the bottom of society right beside Lawyers. Both groups are licensed to steal in which you have no recourse if you become a victim of either. Airline companies have decided to get in on the act too. I won’t be surprised if they don’t calculate the amount of air you breathe during any flight and charge you by the liters you consume during the flight. If there was any other way to travel to/from Asia, I would never set foot on an airplane again.

Hi Miss Pea Ask for directions from a Fipilono, lol, lol. Miss Pea , I think that Filipinos , really look like Thai people, I can usually tell the Thais apart from other Asian neighbors, but Filipionos really look like Thai people , and as you have been telling us about the family, shopping, interaction with each other, and even this , "Ask for directions from a Fipilono", in Thailand that is also the same thing with directions, ( I do ask several Thai people , and I hope that the majority can give me the right directions) . O do know that the Thai people came from China, but you are like brothers and sisters. really very nice. Poor wife had a very bad accident, a year and 1/2 ago, and she can no longer travel at all. We walk through our lovely city, Munich Germany, and even then only 30-45 min is her maximum,, it was a very bad accident and she is 83 Germany is not big, only a little larger than New Mexico Here is a visit video of Germany, please enjoy kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZpyJqbGBpqqWnJs.html May all living creatures be happy and free from suffering regards Michael Carmichael

Wow! This video really was full of useful info. My friend has extended an invitation to visit her fathers home in Leyte when the health restrictions are lifted. I’m thinking instead of packing clothing I’ll just load up on Charmin TP and open a undercover Sari Sari store. I’ll buy clothing that’s suited for that area from the street vendors.

Great video as usual, facts! Having been many times, my added 2 cents are: 1. There is an enormous distrust. 2. You are only a walking ATM. 3. False accusations will be said behind your back. 4. You will be scammed when possible. 5. Female attention isn't about love only financial security for an extended family. 6. You will never be good enough, constantly judged and monkey branched on when someone better comes along. 7. Don't let your cognitive dissonance delude you into thinking you've found love because you can find some female attention; meaning never visa petition, wear a raincoat, etc. Peace.

@Turnip strange all i ever found in the Philippines very helpful people and kind as well, as far as women scamming you sounds like maybe finding wrong girls in the wrong places, but you can find that anywhere you go, i met my wife in cebu over 10 years ago she lent me pesos i was broke, so you cant judge everyone the same. married with 2 daughters back in scotland now, but i could go there tomorrow and find plenty of honest and genuine people. would trust the people there as much as anywhere in the world, and yes i lived there as well once.

Carry an antiseptic with you. Put it in your cargo pants along with your toilet paper, phone, ID, small flashlight, masks, pesos, condoms, KY jelly, sunglasses, ect, ect. Might as well get a fanny pack.

Got my ticket for April. Hope its open to foreginers by then. For those new to the Philippines, know and understand basic pharses in tagalog especially when riding in jeepneys, tricycles, or taxis. Watch out for kids asking for money also.

Pea i think you are convincing me to go ... i thought i can get to know a Pinay online, and then meet her. I found that was a big waste of time! The last one i chatted to for three days for hours each day, then she told me she is looking for a sugar daddy 😶😶 Miss ... I'm looking for a wife!
