Fixed broad heads, elk and mule deer. 512 grain arrow, 277fps , 70 yd pin. At 65 yds the arrow is 8.1inches high , at 75 its 9 inches low. The halfway point at35 yds which is the highest point your arrow will be is 28inches above my bow arm which is at 52 inches (6’ 4”). Knowing your arrow flight must be at the top along with #1 accuracy. That was a mouth full but it gives me a “flight plan “ if given time (big words from a RR engineer) . That ten yd space is something I’ve been using for yrs. One more item, 425 grain arrow is at 24 inches at 35 and a 14 inch spread at 70.

The problem is all his math in the middle is flawed. There is not a standard drop rate at yardage due to lighter arrows bleeding off speed at range far quicker than a heavier arrow. The heavier arrow will not drop as much as you think by doing napkin math. You have to actually try it. Plus factoring in a live animal, and there unpredictable movement. Unless you are shooting a 900 fps arrow you will never beat an animals reaction with speed. The difference between 300 and 220 fps arriving at target are fractions of a second (go back to start of my statement about bleed off) not enough to matter. Better off making it quite. I could keep going but i won't. Thanks for a good video and continuing the discussion.
@AlphaBowhunting
@AlphaBowhunting 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. These examples are from customers we have built sight tapes for. Obviously there are many moving parts to the process. The topics we covered are simply a small portion of the equation. I disagree with the 220 fps to 300 fps argument when in context with the topics of our video which were judging yardage as well as an animal moving by a few yards of the distance we aim for. If you miss low or high by 6 to 8 inches because of a yardage estimation mistake, you are screwed. What we are trying to help others understand is that by building a forgiving arrow that works for the game you are hunting, with the style of hunting you will follow in the terrain you will be hunting. Again, there is no perfect arrow build, just favorites of each shooter.
@sgtcoach3140
@sgtcoach3140 3 жыл бұрын
@@AlphaBowhunting Going back to the drop it won't be 6 to 8 inches difference at 40 yards. By the paper math using numbers that don't change you are right butt that is the flaw, too many moving factors (ie. Moving animal, bleed off of speed over distance ect.) Also, if your arrow gets there and only gets 4 inches of penetration what was the point? Now we factor in shot selection. Hahahaha gets crazy hahahaha. But there are a lot of heavy arrow misconceptions that are simply untrue unless you physically try them and see. Thanks for your hard work, i hope you don't find my comments rude in response.

@@sgtcoach3140 no worries, I enjoy hearing different perspectives. My example of a potential 7 or 8 inch miss also included average group size of the shooter adding in the human error element. I very much enjoyed this video and you hit the nail on the head!! There is no perfect arrow build but I believe each person has a perfect “window” of speed and weight. If you look at the best in the world there seems to be a common range they ALL seem to be in. A window of 270-295 FPS and arrow weight of 430-540 grains. In those windows seems to be were elite set ups are. If you have a shorter draw length or lower poundage you’ll be closer to the 430 grains and 270 FPS but still in that window. If you have a long draw length you’ll be near the other end of the spectrum with a 500 + grain arrow and 285+ speed but still in that window. I tend to find an average male draw length 26-31 and 65-80 pounds draw weight usually gets somewhere in that perfect window. That window appears to be an elite set up with a great mix of speed and arrow weight for penetration. People who are doing this high arrow weight or people going the other way with to light and speed will limit themselves in the field with the shots they can take.

Marin answer when people say speed doesn't matter and all they're concerned about is momentum or penetration however you want to word it.. speed is penetration, speed is momentum. I shoot mostly traditional and my goal is to shoot as fast a bow as I can with a 500 plus gr arrow.. guys argue with me all the time. They say that accuracy is all that matters I have friends who shoot 135 or 140 feet per second if that deer takes one step at 20 yd you're going to miss

Archers Advantage is well worth the $12/year. You can narrow down your arrow build, saving money in the long run. I have one bow and have built reliable arrows for hunting (kinetic energy/trajectory), 3D (speed) and most recently exploring a fat shaft build for off season indoor. Plus, you can print off accurate sight tapes.

Another great video! Arrow weight doesn't mean a whole lot until you factor in DL and DW. Since arrows are so expensive, if you guys had to do one arrow build based on speed, what would you aim for...280?
@bmills231
@bmills231 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on DL and DW. A 26" draw length pulling 60# shouldn't have the same speed expectations as a 28,29,30" DL. Arrow build would be way too light in my opinion. That said, anything over 28" draw 270-280 fps will likely be the most efficient arrow based on total weight, speed and kinetic energy, my opinion.

As far as micro diameter and drag when it's going through an animal broadheads don't punch a clean hole and the arrow shaft is passing through without touching anything there's drag no matter what whether it's going through the air or touching flesh and it is touching the whole way through so I believe it aids in that portion of penetration as well

@bmills231
@bmills231 3 жыл бұрын
This doesn't make sense. Can you explain it, just in case I'm reading it wrong? Generally people refer to grains per pound, as in 7 or 8 grains (arrow weight) per pound of draw weight. Example 7 grains per pound on a 70lb bow would be 490 grains total arrow weight. You list grains per inch, arrow length and then mention for every 10lbs of draw weight.. I can't see how any of those things correlate in to a starting point for a setup. Curious if I read it wrong or if there's something I'm just unfamiliar with.

I think that sounds like a pretty good setup, very similar to what I hunted with last year. If you are considering picking up a touch more speed you may consider the 4mm Axis that just came out, they are a bit lighter GPI or you could look at a different brand with a lighter GPI. Either way, your build fits comfortably in that middle ground of good speed and good arrow weight ratio.

Whatever arrow style you shoot and you can maintain 325FPS+, then you can shoot WHATEVER you want. I've had a slow bow and had to resort to a 500+ grain arrow just for penetration, its 2021, shoot anything at 320+FPS, at what you want and you WILL pass through, I do it with hogs all the time. My old bow would NOT do that past thirty yards. Hell, if your draw weight is short, just buy an ATA Mamba, they cost the same as most other flagship bows and you can most defiantly shoot a 550 grain arrow at 320+ all day with a 27inch draw. Just my two cents. I used to own a slow bow and would argue arrow weight bc I knew deep down my bow would even shoot a 350 grain arrow over 290. Now I have a speed bow and my logic has been proven WAY wrong. Go watch Waddells you about this subject.
