What is Melasma
Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that causes brown or gray patches to appear on the skin, primarily on the face. As a result, people with darker skin tones are more likely to develop melasma, as they have more melanocytes than people with lighter skin.
Symptoms of Melasma
The symptoms of melasma are going to look different depending on a person’s skin tone. But In general, melasma causes patches of dark skin on high points of the face. And Melasma on dark skin appears as dark brown or grey-brown patches. These patches often appear in a symmetric pattern on both sides of the face, mainly appearing on the cheeks, nose, forehead, upper lip, and chin.
How does Melasma form?
It occurs when melanocytes, which produce the pigment you see on your skin, when they produce too much pigmentation in the skin, the result is dark patches. People with black or brown skin have more melanocytes. This means that they are more likely to develop melasma than people with lighter complexions.
Melasma treatment creams
1.) Hydroquinone. If your currently on a regimen of hydroquinone, which works by blocking melanin production, keep following your dermatologists instructions until the melasma clears up. The most common melasma therapies include the 2% hydroquinone (HQ) creams, and Clinical studies do show us that creams containing 2% HQ can be effective in lightening the skin and are less irritating than higher concentrations used for melasma.
2.) Kojic acid. Kojic acid, Inhibits an enzyme necessary in the production of melanin, helping to fade dark spots and discoloration. It also delivers some antioxidant protection and you’ll likely start to see results within two weeks.
3.) Azelaic acid. Azelaic acid works to improve melasma in two ways. First, it encourages cell turnover to exfoliate the skin and promote new, healthy skin growth. Second, azelaic acid also has antioxidant properties that help remove free radicals that can contribute to dull skin for a naturally brighter complexion

I’ve suffered from melasma since I was 16. Melasma was something I thought was genetic and learned to live with it just fine. I’ve also suffered from iron deficiency anemia since my teens. Although I was prescribed iron supplements I never took them. I’m bad about taking pills. 5 yrs ago I started doing chemical peels and microdermabrasion they didn’t help at all and just kept getting worse. By 39 my face was invaded with melasma. Over the last 2 years I tried taking care of my skin by avoiding the sun and using a moisturizer I noticed some improvement a spot here and there gone but that’s it over a 2 year period. About 2 months ago I started to take my prescribed iron pills about 50-75% of the time. Well let me tell you 30 days after starting the pills I happened to take a close look in the mirror and noticed about 50% of melasma from checks and mustache is gone and it’s about 30-50% lighter there is also random spots breaking up the melasma. I’m definetly on to something. My diet is the same for last 5yrs, I drink 5 glasses of water, sun exposure is absolutely minimal, I don’t exercise. The only change is that I started to take iron supplements. Please go to doctor and do a complete lab work and find deficiencies. Maybe treating deficiencies and going to a dermatologist and using skin lighteners. I hope I helped someone.

Due to hypothyroidism I get my complete blood test done regularly, every micronutrient deficiency is checked and taken care of. Am careful about sun and heat exposure, also not into junk food and sugary delights, yet my melasma is increasing by the day. It is invading faster these days. I am exasperated seriously. My HB is 13 btw.

I wish my dermatologist had prescribed my compound medicine or I had seen this information sooner. My dermatologist is one of the top doctors in her field in my area. She initially prescribed tretinoin at the lowest concentration and when it didn’t work she increased it. As you may know, this medication is not cheap! When it didn’t work she prescribed a compound of hydroquinone, tretinoin, kojic acid, niacinamide, and fluocinolone. I saw visible results within a week. Moreover, it was cheaper than just getting the tretinoin alone! What a waste of a couple of hundred dollars when she should have prescribed the compound from the beginning. Still trying to wrap my head around that! Anyways, thanks for your video!

When the sun start to shine again, i start to be worried because it was very large patchs on my face. I start a treatment with vitamin C last month. After 1 month of treatment, my skin has clearly improved, my tone is more uniform, my dark patchs are almost gone. I will continue for at least three month before going to use Dermamelan.

Dear doctor I am a 68 year old male. I am a wheat complex skin type person but now my face and forehead is having heavy pigmentation patches and forehead area is almost dark in colour and since my head is bald , the black colour is slowly spreading in to head other areas. I want to take treatment and procedures to reduce the skin colour to a presentable level. I am staying in Calicut . Waiting for your reply

Thanks for the question, it’s ideal to use them one at a time first. Then you can slowly integrate them into a morning and night time routine.

Hi, Dr. Aspires! I’m a new subscriber and I love how thorough this video was. Doctor, will taking apple cider vinegar supplements flares up your melasma? Thank you. 🙏🏻
@ArsalanAspires
@ArsalanAspires Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! There is no direct link between apple cider vinegar supplements and eczema flare ups. With that said, people have different eczema triggers, and what helps one person may not help you. Although ACV will not balance the overactive immune system that causes eczema, some theorize it may help. Hope that helps!

Nutritionist here: Yes there is a link. Apple Cider Vinegar contains histamine which triggers eczema and allergic skin issues.

But I think it doesn’t link to melasma.

I didn’t get this on my cheek until the mask mandate. I stayed inside recently for two weeks and it started to disappear. Once it was back to my daily routine’s and had to wear a mask, it has darkened again.

They don't work sustainably. Pigmentation will come back once you stop applying the creams. They do not cure but just control, and you've to keep applying the creams which is taxing and extremely devastating. Therefore, instead of depending on all these creams for your pigmentation, I suggest you cleanse your body through proper diet and regular exercise. Proper Diet and excercise is the cure for pigmentation.

@@cocokippen7137 I think you should not apply sunscreen when you've hyper pigmentation already. Sunscreen does worse to pigmentation, that's my experience. Therefore, I've stopped using sunscreen now and it's much better without that. Just moisturising with aloe Vera gel

@@AG-nn8lp Never lose hope..consult a dermatologist as there are lot of causes for melasma..they will help you with it..also include 1. Vitamin c 2. Any tyrosinase inhibitor (azelaic acid, arbutin, hydroquinone, kojic..etc) 3. Retinoid in your routine..start gradually and give it few months to see results.. Unfortunately we cannot treat melasma with single ingredient, you gotta combine two or more for better results Never ever skip your sunscreen (SPF 50) mainly and reapply every 2 hrs once..
