Szymon Szor At the time Higuain was a squad player that was true in 2013 I think only in 07/08 and 08/09 Higuain was starting fairly regularly as soon as Pellegrini came in and bought Benema and CR7 Higuain time as a regular starter was over.

@@adammercer6004 Higuain was injury prone. Mourinho also preferred Higuain and once said "If you go hunting and you haven’t got a dog, if you have a cat, you take the cat. You can’t go on your own. And that’s a bit like what we have here. We have a forward, Benzema and we play him but if we don’t have Higuaín, we have a problem". Higuain leaving was more political, typical madrid. @Mantorras Montquilla, Arsenal definitely missed out, signing a 20+ goal a season striker for 45M is on point. Look at his numbers till his 2nd Juve season. Career average of 0.5 goals per game at the moment

As a Arsenal fan our transfer business under Wenger , the board and our negotiator Dick Law was abysmal ..._good job we haven't got them anymore why we've signed Aubameyang , Lacazette and Pepe in recent years getting rid of Wenger and Dick Law aswell as most of the backroom staff was a improvement massively especially regarding transfer activity .

Wenger legacy for me is very ambiguous because his real rise and fall coincides with David Dein, as soon as Dein was gone Wenger struggled so was Dein really the one who should be praised not Wenger? I also wonder why no one has criticized the lack of world class Arsenal youth products given how long Wenger was there and the fact that Arsenal are in London and have an enormous catchment of youth, also when the new crop of young French stars was coming through why wasn’t he in on the ground floor? Pogba joined Utd academy instead of his, Mbappe looked at Chelsea instead of his ect. I am just really surprised no one really critiques his Arsenal tenure properly.

The relationship actually reminds me a bit more of Clough and Taylor except Wenger had the eye but Dein knew how to manage him and push deals through. Arsenal started to slide after the invincibles, it's true, but they were very unlucky in 2008. To me, the Eduardo injury was the real turning point for arsenal as they were well on course for the title that year (which is crazy when you look at utd's squad that season, but quite true). They had an excellent side centred around fabregas and could have built on it had they won the league, but they all started leaving after that and seemed unable to properly replace the ones that left (and that was well after Dein).

Both should be given praise during the early years and it was just a partnership that worked in harmony, bit like shearer and sutton for blackburn in the 90s. When Dein went it was just Wenger operating with the new board and backroom staff but he was trained to be a businessman so was very careful in deals. He didn't do badly for the first part of Emirates era as he had his hands tied behind his back and once the debt for the Emirates was paid off, he didn't adapt but it was because he was trained to be a businessman over a long period of time. The problem was that the new board were stingy and were also incompetent so they allowed players to run down their contracts and pretty much lost control of the club so Wenger carried on in a businessman like fashion. As for the youth, he did give a lot of chances for youth such as 2007 league cup and had strong youth prospects coming through which were used throughout his tenure.. Problem is transitioning from youth team to first team is a massive step up and lots of potential doesn't necessarily mean that players will be world class, hence why a lot of top youth prospects fail at big clubs. Look at Ravel Morrison or Ballotelli. Pogba grew at Juventus not United, and there haven't been many prospects recently that have started at top clubs and have become world class. Youth finding is mainly due to scouts but they can only scout players with potential, they can't just scout world class players so I don't think you can really blame Wenger in that regard.

The Suarez bid is infamous due to the media spinning the narrative. Arsenal's understanding of the issue is broken down into 2 parts. 1) Wenger has come out and said that Suarez wanted to join Arsenal. 2) Bids over 40mil meant that Liverpool merely had to inform Suarez that another club was interested. This is to formally open proceedings. Liverpool's reaction? 1) What are they smoking over there? 2) Stevie G knowing that Suarez was his only hope of actually winning an EPL title. So, he practically begged Suarez to stay. Didn't work out in the end lol. Liverpool's REAL reaction 1) 40mil was the real release clause. Liverpool just refused to sell. Just go google it.

I'm sure Law was just bullshitting Real with the squad player comment, but why didn't they pay the fee for an amazing finisher if they were prepared to pay a similar price for Suarez? Yes, Suarez was the better player, but buyers tend to pay a bit more than what a player's worth.

Well, it was so frustrating when we miss out on Lemar and just chopped out the deal with Man City for Alexis Sanchez of which we almost got £60 million. In the end following, the swap deal was dust and done.

To be fair some of the failed attempts were escapes. Also, from what I understand, we were never gonna get Suarez anyway. I think Arsenal expected Suarez to push for a move after the initial bid but StevieG convinced him to wait out for Barcelona, which was the correct strategy for him imo. Our dailying lost us Griezmann but saved us from Balotelli. You win some you lose some I guesss.

I'd really love to see that Arsenal Squad and the Set of Players that they were linked too, if they had those players then it would've been anothet Invincible Team, but unfortunately none of that happened.

Need a few more windows to be certain but the new regime of Edu, Sanllehi and co seem more adept at pulling off good deals than Wenger+Law/Gazidis/Dein. Especially in the modern transfer market. They've already done better at finding lesser known gems, and dont dither around but get the deals most needed.

Eavy Eavy it wasn’t a release clause. Look up the interview from the then-head of transfers of arsenal in 2019. The guy that was involved in the deal literally says that it wasn’t a release clause and that suarez was actually stupid for letting such a pointless clause be integrated in his contract.

Looking at the players we pulled out from, I thought I was the only one thinking we dodged some bullets. Even if we had proposed a 50mil+ for Suarez, Liverpool wouldn't listened to our offers and their owner said the same.

There was nothing wrong with bidding £40M+1 for Suarez. If his release clause was £40M wouldn't the same people be mocking us for wasting money if we'd offered £45M or £50M? It just turns out that release clauses aren't worth the paper they're printed on
