Art student here! I would recommend art school if you know you’re not gonna follow through with your plans and need “strict” guidance to ensure you’ll do better. I never practiced anatomy till high school but art school has definitely helped me achieve that. If you don’t have the money for school or just don’t want to go, just look at videos of figure drawings or websites that let you use models as guidance.

I agree with this. I finally decided to go the art school route because I have trouble sticking to something without some kind of external pressure. I wanted to get better at art and make a career of it, but I just don't have the kind of internal motivation necessary to get it done. Art school has given me deadlines and specific things to work on, and it's been really helpful to stay on task. I'm improving in ways that I know I wouldn't have been able to on my own. All that said, even if you do decide on art school you don't have to go to the fanciest, most expensive college. Find a less expensive school and just commit to doing your best! You get out of it what you put into it, I think.

Speaking of the realism advice: Drawing anime _can_ help you improve your anatomy, lighting, etc. since they are not only required in realism. I studied by using reference. The simplier artstyles are very good as a starting point for obvious reasons. You are naturally going to have some progress, which allows you to try something harder. Still doesn't have to be realism. Thx for the video, you made some good points 💖
@juice3287

personal annoyance: someone close to me was one of those people who told me "draw every day" look, i get what they mean, if you work at something daily you get better. key word, WORK. you cant tell someone "play the drums every day!" and expect them to be Whiplash levels of quality because they do it every day. when you say draw every day, that implies the person could draw a poop emoji and they'll improve. i've seen artists who draw daily or just very often yet they don't improve as they never request critique, try to practice their fundamentals etc etc. with the realism thing its super overwhelming? i've improved without knowing how to realistically draw something. Analyse how it looks realistically and understand the realistic proportions and practice them, you don't need to know hyper realism to be able to draw a fun cartoon or anime pic etc.

One advice I really started to dislike is "just practice". I know this advice comes from a good place, it's people trying to be encouraging and telling young artists that they can become great at their work on their own. But it still can come of as condescending, since you're kinda implying that the artist isn't already practicing. It's also too wage in my opinion. Practice won't help much if you don't know how to practice correctly. I've seen artists put out a lot of content over years and barely improve while others improved rapidly in just a year.

as much as one should enjoy what you're drawing, drawing often is still, imo, practice. I see it the same as exercise; if I don't draw for a week, I get rusty or 'unfit'. Even if some elements are off, you won't be able to correct it if you don't see what's wrong with it which, again, usually comes with frequent drawing. It's more about training your eye, as drawing ''good'' is about capturing a vision with *clarity* - that is, drawing as close to what you envision. I personally recommend life drawing lessons or drawing any still-life/photos of whatever it is you wish to improve on. You don't need art school for this. Yes, it can be boring at times, but they truly do help better your understanding of the subject matter being studied. I also recommend drawing short comics or sketching thumbnails of sequential images to help sharpen your understanding of whatever desired subjects which will coincidentally sharpen your clarity.

I really love your “angry grandpa” rambles! You made good points! I especially agree with you on “you have to go art school” and draw everyday” I haven’t been to art school but everyone I’ve known who has says that they’d much rather just take some courses on skill share or pay for some one on one lessons since they could learn generally the same thing easier! As for “draw everyday” I recently had to unlearn this one ^^ I always felt like I wasn’t improving fast enough or working hard enough so I would constantly draw even if I didn’t want to and it gave me a /huge/ burnout it’s lasted for about 2 months and I’m only now getting out of it but on a happier note the pallet you used is SO GOOD!! They’re really eye pleasing and djdjdh I love your art and your videos and I hope your taking care of yourself! I can’t wait for your next videos! Also some art schools are bad, or force you to change your art style. I agree totally with all your points. I'm glad I found this channel. It's fun listening to you ramble about the struggles of the artist. I myself am an animator who just began my professional journey into self-sustaining animation and it's fun to imagine myself as a full-blown artist. I can sometimes draw, but I'm more known for my humor than my actual skills at making art. Regardless, keep on complaining about them kids with baggy pants and loud music. They keep them pants baggy to hide their boomboxes in their slacks, and I think that's terrible.

I’ve always thought art instruction that emphasizes breaking the human form down into planes, is an almost stylized method of instruction... but it’s arguably the best way to learn anatomy. Also, if you’re referencing the work of an artist who produces stylised pieces, if they themselves have a reliable knowledge of anatomy, then that will shine through

from the perspective of someone who went to art school: it’s so, so dependent on the person that i won’t advise someone i don’t know on whether or not they should go. personally, i struggle with self motivating, so being given assignments helped me rapidly improve in a way i just couldn’t otherwise (not to mention the social and emotional benefits i received by getting out of the area i was raised in and living/working with other artists). i guess i wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re 100% sure it’ll suit you and your learning style.

I don’t practice by drawing realism anatomy but draw a dolk anatomy. It’s a manga anime style ball join doll. So the anatomy is similar to real human but it closer to anime anatomy instead. You can try this trick too.

Oof, that first one is why I intentionally avoided studying realism and "the basics" for a long time as a young 11-12 year old first hearing that advice, as a kind of stubborn "well fuck that now I'm NOT doing it", and honestly I think it can work just as well to just practise regularly on the side while also drawing your usual cartoony/anime/stylized style, gradually working what you've learned into your usual art, instead of completely stopping drawing any kind of stylization until you've nailed realism.

To the point of the cost of art school-transferring is also an option! It can still cost a lot at the end of the day, but you can pretty much half the price of it if you go to community college to get your generalized courses out of the way. I hesitated with whether art school was for me or not and at the end of the day the cost of all four years was totally not worth it, BUT the cost of two years, spread out over a longer period-is way more manageable.

Honestly, I hate the "Never do work for free" or "Don't work for exposure" arguments. Some people work purely for free and getting their work recognized is more than enough. Not every artist wants to make art into a career. Some people want to draw things for their friends or even for random strangers just to practice and don't want to charge. They want the practice or the attention and that's all. The expectation that all artists are fixing to even make a cent off their work is presumptuous and devalues to work of artists of choose not to charge for their services. It also increases competition for artists who do want to make money off their work and, from personal experience, I can tell you that constantly hearing that made me less eager to create work for others or even myself. Creating work for others is my favorite part of art, and I don't see why I can't get that joy without being expected to charge.

as someone who has rapidly progressed in art since the last year, yeah not a single bit of the advice that you covered helped me. im nowhere near where i want to be, but a bit of advice i can offer is don't overwork yourself, you don't need to constantly be improving. take some time to draw a pretty pinterest girl or a stupid cat doodle, it doesn't make you any less of an artist. you can draw what you want while still striving to improve. you dont need to be perfect at art to draw stupid shit.

It's only to attend colleges/university and its because they're not government funded, iirc. Public schools that are k-12 are government funded (i.e. tax funded) and school is mandatory until a certain age (can't remember which age), so those more or less have to be free. College is not mandatory or tax funded, hence it not being free.

Art school is worthless unless you want something very specific where you absolutely need it like Disney. I'm an artist in art school only because A job I want says I need it and it's not even for the job it's for the visa to be in the country. I went to the cheapest school and got a scholarship and pretty much did art school for free. I hate it so much, it's very unemployable.
@glasperle77

I'm always against fundamentals when it comes to art, Also had fight with art teachers and art academies-professors because I simply don't agree. You don't need fundamental understanding. People use fancy words and physics but often their art is horrible xD explain this to me ! For example: I once had discussion with someone explained the fundamental understanding of bouncing light. I also do bouncing light. I do it even since I was pre-teen. And not because I learned it, or understand physics. Because I follow my gut-feeling. I think "Hm this looks good" so I will repeat it , same counts for environment and backgrounds. People talk hours about values but their outcome is not better as your outcome when you don't think about any value but you only do this and that so it turns out like it's in your head. So the worst art advice to me is people saying about fundamentals, or "try to learn anatomy" if you tried for like 12 years and you suck so you focus on more important things like storytelling in your art xD I remember I had always A+ in art class. Until I disagreed with the ways of the art teacher and what they wanted which was similar to the art academy here. Later in university it was even worse. I will NEVER forget....since only my people from class knew about how popular I was back then on deviantart and knew about my arts (you know these people who can't draw so they like everything you do even if it's bad) but the professor didn't because I don't tell them. We had art class and he put amazon boxes in middle and we should draw the cubes. We should draw the cubes in a certain way plus we should hold the pen on the very edge (furthest from tip). And I draw for like 25 years I know how I can draw things BEST, including cubes. So I secretly drew it my way (holding pen close to tip and drew it without fundamental knowledge my way and it turned out ok) but then he noticed I do it my way so he ranted and came along, stood next to me. everyone watching and he forced me to use HIS way. Yeah I tried and it didn't turn out good because a) if you as artist knowing that your way is more efficient, better in quality , easier and faster and b) you are used to some thing and the other is so new for you that you can't adapt-----He gave me the "advice" because he said "you for sure have never touched art before, i bet you are not a creative person you should consider trying to be creative. maybe art isn*t for you tho but you can look up some videos" xD we all shut up and didn't say anything. I just said "yeah maybe I cant do art"- and he never knew. I somewhat agree and disagree with your last point. I agree if it's really for exposure you should not force yourself. But on the other hand I can't say anything against since I draw each day so I can finish much before I die xD Another thing I heard (rarely on me but on others) there are people who prefer drawing guys and they had lots of guys ranting about "you know you should draw more girls?" like this and even tho I am not affected it made me very mad xD Like people telling you what to draw or what not. Also with the selling artwork thing is not only the fact people tell you when YOU are ready or good enough to sell it, but on the other hand they also write "You should go lower in price I don't think your artwork's quality is worth the price" (eespecially if you are already underpriced LOL) A very very bad thing I get very aggressive is specially for doing comics. I had a few "fans" who said as advice , I should write down my whole plot as text, and hand them out in public to the fans because they would have a right to know because they follow the comics. And if I ever decide to cancel drawing it they would have right to do so , since they now have the plot and they supported me all the time by reading my comic. That was the highest trash I ever heard in my life, not just copyright issue or intellectual property issue, but also the rudeness of these people who barely even left comments....
