The pads of paper at 5:06 aren't sketchbooks. They are for making art on a piece of paper that you want to tear out and have separated from the pad. (Perhaps to frame and hang on a wall, or gift to someone, or make into a greeting card, etc.) Sketchbooks are collections of pages that are tightly and permanently bound together in a book format, and are not meant to be torn out and separated. So you could probably still get some good use out of the pads you have left! 😊 I absolutely LOVE acrylic inks as well!! I've been adding fine details to my watercolor pieces with them, using a dip pen and quill nib or brush. The Daler Rowney FW inks are amazing, and so are Amsterdam acrylic inks. I also use calligraphy and india inks for when I want more transparent marks. One thing with the acrylic inks I found is that if you're not fond of a certain color, you can mix other acrylic ink colors in with it until you achieve the hue that you want. For example- I had bought a bottle of bright electric green ink from my local art shop because it was on sale for $2, and when I got it home I mixed some dark blue and a tiny bit of payne's grey acrylic ink with it and made a very dark and moody, muted turquoise color which I have used a ton of since. You can make pastel shades by adding white ink, or tone down very bright, acidic shades by adding a single drop or two of the color's compliment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience with all these art supplies! 🙏☺️

Thank you so much for your comment. It is a great idea to mix your inks, I may just try that🙂 I am just no fond of the 10 pages... I like to feel my money worth by having more pages (at least 30), whether it is a sketchbook that a pad.

Some of the things I've definitely avoided are oil paints and the paper pad and fan palette watercolors. I have no interest. And I bought one Paul Rubens supply and really thought it was overrated and haven't bought anything else by them. But I've found that I tend to watch videos about other supplies and end up with at least a small set of them even if I don't have a huge need! I am now to the point where I make myself wait a month before buying and if I still REALLY want the thing and can lay out a project where I can use it, I get it. I think of art supply purchases as "experiences". If I use something once, it's the equivalent of going out for the day, buying lunch and whatever. If I don't love the art supply, it's okay because I needed to experience it to find out, in the same mindset where I'd visit a restaurant or other venue to find out if I like it.

I love the concept of paying for the experience 💞 it makes so much sense. The only thing I bought from Paul Rubens are the Hayia oil pastels and I really like them.

Oil paints, I just can't even imagine using them, the painting process is time-consuming and I don't have the nerve for it.😅

good investments guache paint in tubes, either use it thick like oil n acrylic paint or v thin like watercolour. excellent gradiation, versatile paint.. watercolour paint in pans (not tubes), because if you dont use it much, it will last a lifetime, it cannot dry out like tubes of paint do after a few years, becuse it is already solid it wont degrade with age,, also excellent shade n tone range either use damp ( not wet) paintbrush / almost dry paintbrush for deep /dark opaque shades n tones or with wet paintbrush for more translucent pastel tones, excellent gradiation, also v mobile /transportable,. even cheap watercolour pans work well, ive been really impressed with watercolour pans I bought from aldi/lidl, but not so with other art products from aldi/lidl,, also childrens watercolour pans l 1 or 2 pound for 12 pans are rubbish, but a set of 12 pans for about five or 6 pounds work well., unlikely you will gain much from an expensive brand. watercolour pencils use them like normal pencils , excellent shade n tone range depending on hard or soft pressure from your hand/arm, add water n use like watercolour paint, again they will last a life time coz they wont dry out, excellent gradiation, dont get a really cheap brand, from the works, pound shop, B and M, etc, coz they wont work properly, they are too hard and plastic. mid price range brand are good such as WH smith, crafters companion, derwent, ohuhu, etc work well. unlikely you will gain much from an expensive brand such as garan dache. im from England im new here, i could be wrong but looks like you are from UK from the brands you are using, W H smith, the works. watercolour paper it is worth paying for it a set of childrens gel pens, even ones from the works are OK. a pack of childrens wax crayons. acrylic (paint) marker pens/ permanent markers pens, paint in a pen ,some might view these as a gimmick but I like the opacity, fun and experimentation from all the surfaces they can be applied to and work on, paper/card, stone, metal, wood, glass, etc, v versatile. mid price range such as from hobbycraft work well.,

Thank you for all your suggestions. I definitely need to experiment a bit more with gouache. I tend to use more mixed media paper then watercolour simply because of the nature of the work I do. Love every form that acrylics come in 😋

For the Peerless watercolor sheets, you might want to look into tutorials on how to turn them into a portable palette. I have seen people cut them into smaller pieces and then adhere them to a card to carry around. That way you have more colors in a smaller are!
@theartofetta
@theartofetta 7 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment. I did cut them and attach them to watercolour paper. It does make it easier to use, but still, I feel it's an extra step that I don't need to do considering all the options out there.

That's true. I feel like the format of the watercolor is a novelty. The vivia color sheet is also sheet watercolor, but they made it into a portable palette for you already@@theartofetta

Great video! I'll not be buying oil paints. The 6 to 12 month cure time stresses me out immensely, and I'm already a hot mess in general without the super long dry times. I'll stock to my watercolors and acrylics!

it does its job well, but only if you need it, and only if you use watercolour paints a lot, it has a really unpleasant strong stink, it is expensive, and a candle or white wax crayon does a similar job for a fraction of the cost.but masking fluid is more precise, although bleach can be precise.

I have practically everything on the market so I can't name a product I wouldn't buy in the first place... But liquid watercolours/watercolour inks are something I'm not that into, might buy some to refill my Ecolines if I ever get to use them up. Many 'won't buy' supplies for me are about specific product lines/brands I didn't like. I won't buy any of the Derwent XL series, because I don't see the point. Also, I don't like the Inktense. Won't buy Poscas either, unless they're heavily discounted (like -50% or more). But not the Mop'Rs, didn't like them at all. I won't buy a pencil ever again. Never use them and Scrawlrbox shoves them down our throats constantly. Probably won't be buying more alcohol markers, especially in sets. Most likely no pastel pencils either. Haven't used them in years. Won't buy a waterbrush either. I have loads and hate them, never use them. I doubt I'll buy a black fineliner in the coming years. Especially Scrawlrbox has made sure I'm drowning in them and again, never use them. Won't buy more Marabu products. :) Or Arteza colours. I'm on an art supply no-buy as well, the only exceptions being replacing stuff I use up, buying discontinued stuff or heavily discounted things (so basically in our local store they have one shelf with all the stock they're no longer carrying on clearance and that's the only place I'm allowed to shop from). I'm allowing sub boxes/mystery packs occasionally. On the flip side, I'd like to buy more Neocolor IIs since I've never had all the colours and there are a couple nice ones on the chart that didn't come in my sets over the years. But that's for 2025 most likely.

Thank you so much for your comment. I think this is a position I will put myself in next year (buy discounted products I want, etc) . I know? Won't need fineliner or pencils for a while really😂 I am still trying to decide if I should give a go to the neo. 2. I love my neocolor 1 and I know they feel quite different...let's see

my opinion ,items not to buy, oil paints, alcohol markers and pastels (the chalky pastels not the oil pastels), my opinions might be contraversial, despite having a BA hons degree in fine art and half an MA in graphic design ( had to leave uni course due to ill health) i have never liked nor got on with oil paints , dunno if they are cheaper now but 20 yes ago they were very expensive, no cheap brands n i just dont like the way they work, cant make them work for me,. alcohol marker pens i just cannot see why they are so popular, yes the colours are vibrant but the gradiation of colours is rubbish, you cannot blend from one colour to another in a satisfactory way, even with ohuhu alcohol markers,, compared to gradiation you get from paint (guache, acrylic, watercolour) and also coloured pencils, alcohol markers are not as versatile as paint nor watercolour pencils.
