@@sarafontanini7051 I have the feel like if not the director, maybe the writer or the producer do not understand or like *at all* the concept of evil manipulator antagonist... I mean, in The Arctic incident, if you're reading candidly, the fact Koboi is crazy as a ferret and Foaly wasn't just his complotist self is an actual surprise. And even by that point you get why people don't believe him and think "Fuck, the pony will need a lot of help to convince them."

What so strange is Disney use to respect the source material like Chronicles of Narnia and Bridge to Terabithia. Sure, there were little changes here & there, but they at least adapted the stories accurately. I can't say the same for Artemis Fowl.

@@YamiSpyroX YEP I haven't seen the first film, but I went to see the second one with a friend who wanted to. My logic was "well, I've read the books, this shouldn't be hard to pick up even if they changed a few things". Now, don't get me wrong... I'm not saying the films are BAD, but they're definitely not adaptations of the books, which is what I went in expecting to see.
@YamiSpyroX
@YamiSpyroX 3 жыл бұрын
@@HivefleetMagoladon I would say to go back and watch the first movie for all things considered it's still an rather good movie. It's still darker and grittier than most kids films, and they did unlike 'Hidden World' acknowledge that dragons are still dangerous wild creatures regardless of tamability. Toothless while often cute still had an sense of pride and wildness that made him seem future king material, which is not his book self at all, but it made him more believable than what he ends up being. To be honest I don't think I'd give this franchise as much grief as I do, if they didn't bury the source so much and milk it for all it's worth. Fact: If you read the 1st art-book it clearly shows that they at first intended to make an truer adaptation 'Back in 2004' but for whatever reason it was deemed too 'Kiddie'. Seeing all of that awesome unused book-like concepts including, The Dragon Nestery, Old Wrinkly, and OG Fishlegs made me really sad!
@emilyevans7858
@emilyevans7858 3 жыл бұрын
@@HivefleetMagoladon My way of looking at it is sometimes you get “adaptations” (Lord of the Rings) and sometimes you get “inspired by”. I find How to Train Your Dragon an “inspired by” done well, you have a number of the characters you fell in love with from the books but the story, though almost unrecognisable from the original, is done well, themes and messages have carried over and the plot makes sense. As a result you can tell the film makers love and respect the source material, and as a viewer I can enjoy it as its own separate entity. The Artemis Fowl film on the other hand, ho boy, the characters and casting are all wrong they went for a diverse cast which is good but when the books described a Eurasian Butler and an olive skinned Holly, yeah, that was already built in and they ignored it(I always imaged Halle Berry as Holly when reading the books)(got to love Dame Judi but not as Root). The plot is a hodgepodge of unoriginal cliches that don’t even make sense and bare no resemblance to any of the books. It definitely feels like someone just went potty, looked at what was left and said “This book is popular, if we shove that title on this mess the existing fans will by it.” Yeah no.

Harry Potter franchise knew it couldn't compete movie V Book so instead of change it, it stuck as close to it as it could. Where people tolerated the first Jackson movie slightly is that for the most part it stuck to the book where it could but the second DID NOT. Funnily enough, there ARE deleted scenes that are from the book - Artemis torturing a fairy-addict to obtain her magic book (his introductory scene from the book) and Artemis getting the gold he wanted. The film mixed set up of the first book (kidnapping Holly and fairies trying to rescue her from his house) with the plot of the second book, which was about Artemis teaming up with Holly to save his father. You are right on a moral stance but Artemis was still a protagonist. A protagonist and a good guy are not synonymous with each other. They tend to overlap since people want to make their protagonists good but what a protagonist is at heart is a character the reader sees the eyes of the world through the observer not the moral center. And all things considered this story is at its core a report documenting the affairs of Artemis so it makes sense that the story is about him with holly being a key character based on how her life became so entwined around Artemis’s.

He uses that wealth to discover and extort a foreign race of magical beings out of their own vast wealth, in order to buy a wish to heal his mother who went nuts after Artemis Sr. died. The majority of this book, yes, takes place at Artemis' home while the fairies attempt to get their gold back by essentially laying siege to the estate. @@tnecniw It's not only that, imho the first 2 were the best books. eternity Code feels like it was intended to be the end... Especially with taking Butler out of hte main cast. Or if he was intended to be replaced with Juliet during the continuation of the series, that didn't really play out. And then 4 came out and killed Root. Massive waste in my opinion. He and butler had great chemistry. It's imho not really the issue that Artemis became a better person, but more that the series, after Eternity Code, kinda didn't have a real way in front of it and was just floundering along. I persoanlly also dislike such reveals as "oh humanity did all that stuff only because Race X gave tech"... and that was made in the last Book... Imho Root should'vebeen killed off in no sooner than the third to last book of the Series. And imho Artemis and Co. should'Ve had more adventures together underground. There’s also his attire. In the books he always wears a suit and when a mission where he has to pretend to be a regular teenager involves him wearing regular teenage attire one of his first vocalised thoughts on the way back to the hotel is that he can’t wait to get changed. The movie changes his whole motivation and downplays his criminal genius aspect. In the book he wants fairy gold to replenish the family fortune, and works out how to find a fairy, get a hold of their Book, decode it and work out the rules they play by all on his own intelligence. The books even give some of this feeling to the reader in that there’s a code running through them. Once you know it it’s a basic substitutes cipher but you still work for it. Like most YA books from this era, it wasn't just a knock off Harry Potter. Artemis was supposed to be the villain. He was pretty much a child Moriarty. Percy Jackson was supposed to be a Greek hero myth in a modern setting. He fought a chimera in the Arch, found out that a record company is actually a front for the underworld, and fought Ares to the "death". Unfortunately, Disney only understands that these series had similar audiences to Harry Potter, so they try to make it as similar as possible to attract more people without understanding why the series were loved to begin with.

So growing up I read all of the books and even as an adult I read them. They are good solid books and a lot of fun. The concept of having an sort of evil kid genius, with a hulking man named Butler as his assistant is brilliant and done in a way you rarely see. Over the course of the books Artemis learns his bad ways have consequenses and as he matures from a 12 year old to almost an adult over the course of multiple books, he also learns to do stuff not only for himself, but for others too. Along the way we meet strong characters who all grow. Many starting as foes, while slowly becoming allies and even friends. We have an klepto dwarf Munch, an elf soldier Holly, Centaur technician and many more. Focussing on Artemis himself, he is cold, calm, collected and calculated. As I said he starts off as an villain. He has a henchman named Butler, who is his caretaker, muscle, assassin, soldier in the field. Artemis literally doesn't care about the physical stuff, he has Butler for all that shit. It is even so bad that at one time he had to climb a ladder and he was exhausted. This is one of my favourite duos, since they trust each other and care about each other. This movie butchered everything. They claim that Artemis and his dad have a deep connection. It even shows Artemis training with his dad. A dad to whom he rarely spoke with as he calls him formal Father. He dad dissapears through an accident and was kidnapped by Russians. His whole family are criminals and his dad was a very famous one. BUT NOOO!!. We at Disney make him actually a protector of the secrets of this world. What kind of fucking bullshit is that. Not only that this all has to be explained by Butler to Artemis. Artemis is the fucking evil mastermind. He already wears suits, because that makes him look more adult en he has to explain stuff everyone, because he is the fucking genius, who thinks about the big picture and has the big plan. Than they fuck up the story even more. His dad is kidnapped by Opal who is an villain you will meet at a later book. Than he fucking teams up with the elf. The same elf he kidnaps in book one just to get gold from the elves. There is no alliance, no friendship or protector crap. They are enemies. During the whole first book he wages war against the Elves just to steal their gold. I am sick and tired of the butchering of stories to make it more generic, instead of actually try to read the story and from it make a great movie.

DOn't try and make Artemis good, don't make him some naive everyman who doesn't beleive in magic (Book artemis actually figured out magic was real on his own), don't have him and holly become friends, and don't introduce a character who's supposed to be Opal Koboi (the sole recurring villain of the series, who is COMPLETELY different in the books than in the film) just to have some big grand villain. And DON'T tie Artemis FowL Sr to everything, there's a reason his rescue is saved for the second book.

I think they cut it because he's definitely the bad guy in that scene. He gives the old woman fairy holy water and then she burns from the inside before he cures her at the last second after he's scanned the evidence she gives him. I don't think they wanted him to come off as evil. He's meant to be an evil genius but also it's Disney.

In fairness, that is one of the few things still accurate to the book. In the book series Dwarves tunnel by unhinging their jaws and literally eating their way through the dirt. Among other weird evolutionary things they have to help with tunneling are a sort of ability to feel vibrations through the dirt to know whats around them when they're tunneling, and a digestive system fast enough to keep up with all of that dirt they eat tunneling. That is to say, dwarf tunnels are self sealing. Contrary to what you think, that last bit comes in handy way more than you'd think.

@@bbolin5626 i do think it's a good idea. He did the same for Avatar to understand why fans utterly hated the Last Airbender (and Cinema Sins did it for Dragonball). In my opinion it is even necessary to understand how much the Artemis Fowl movie fails as an adaption of a mash up of Books 1 and 2 + Unnecessary, Stupid new plot stuff. And in this short review, he even goes "And this was a book?!" He apparently thinks the movie is faithful to the Novels. Which it isn't!

I liked because it didn’t feel like a normal kids movie(same with A Series of Unfortuante Events). It was dark, had a lot of brutal death scenes for a kids movie, had some really god performances, especially David Straithain as Arthur Spiderwick. It felt like a kids horror movie, with faeries of all things. It makes me wish they made a sequel. I remember there being a second book series set in Florida, it’s been awhile sense I read them, but they could have had Jared essentially becoming the next Arthur Spiderwick and writing his own guide, it could have been awesome. Yet for some reason, I’m the only one who liked this movie. Why?
