Hi guys!! I'm so excited to share this video with you! A big thanks to Arteza for sending me their gouache and watercolor paper to try out and review!! I took this video as an opportunity to also share some tips about painting with gouache (that’s why the video is a bit long, I hope you don’t mind and that you will still enjoy!) Since I don’t often paint with opaque and thick gouache, I also learned something new about gouache while I was painting these illustrations for making this video, so I wanted to share some tips with you! And Arteza gouache allowed me to paint such colourful and nice illustrations without any struggles, even with thick gouache, so I really enjoyed using them! By the way, I’m practising calligraphy and creating illustrations for card design, so during this year you will see more of these illustrations from me! Also, sorry if the voice-over sounds odd in some parts, I had to record a second time some parts where I didn’t like the way I explained some things, but by doing so, unfortunately the sound is different (my voice is to blame). Recording again the whole thing again it would have taken me so much time and maybe it wouldn’t have turned out good, I also wanted to share the video asap! so I hope you understand! Thank you for watching

I don't find anything wrong with the audio Sandra? I thought your voice is so lovely and calming to me. I want to try arteza products but unfortunately they don't ship to Australia. I would love to able to find a bidget friendly gouache so I can practice without spending too much money on the artist gouache.

@Olivier Odorant if you don't hear anything wrong with the audio then I'm relived 😂 because the part where I showed and talked about the lightfastness of Arteza, the sound of my voice is a bit different because I had to record that part a second time, and few other parts in the video but then I guess I don't have to worry about too much :) I asked Arteza if they were planning to open stores in more countries, and they told me that they are planning to do it! so hopefully in the future they will ship to Australia too! What gouache brands you can buy in Australia? I'm curious to know! Here in Switzerland I can find a couple of Swiss gouache brands, but they're too expensive or the quality could be better😂 Yes I've thought abut opening a Patreon page but I think.. it's the not the right time for me yet. I still haven't figure out what content I could offer on Patreon but especially I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to be consistent if I would open a Patreon page, as I am right now. How can I say it in other words... although I try to stick to my weekly schedule, sometimes I have difficulties to keep up with the things I want to do for different reasons. I think when I will find a good a balance and I will be more organised, then I might open a Patreon page! But omg hearing that you would love to support me and learn from me, I'm so touched by your kind words! 😭 I'm flattered that you would love learn from me because I still have so much to learn and to improve in my art! But for now, I will keep making youtube videos and I will make more gouache tutorial for sure! Just watching my videos already helps me a lot!!

Sandra Ruberto thank you, your video was perfect, just what I needed! I'm new to gouache and have been agonising over which ones to buy. The "good" brands can be quite expensive especially some of/most of their reds and some blues, greens and yellows. $35 ish dollars (converted to Australian dollars for me,, so that makes them even more expensive) for one small tube of paint is very difficult for me to afford. The cheap ones though... well, they're... cheap and in the art worlds that usually means no where near as good as the good brands. I find Arteza selling a set of 60 colours in small tubes for $70 (plus $20 for postage so $90 for me) and was trying to find out whether they are any good. The reason being that for that range of colours the price, even for cheaper brands, is pretty good. So, I wanted to know why. I want to get back into art so desperately, I have a number of physical/mental health issues (that have forced me to live on a disability pension 😫) and it was suggested I try art therapy. However art therapy is VERY expensive so I figured I would simply buy some supplies and start drawing and painting for myself and family again. Then, if I get good enough, perhaps I might be able to make a little money on the side 😉 So, I will likely try and save up for the Arteza 60 set to practice (when it comes to art supplies, in the past I have always gone for the biggest and best range of colours, lol). However, would you mind telling me which brands you prefer of the professional paint brands? Also, how do gouache paints compare to "normal" acrylic paints in how they paint? I'm have mainly used watercolours in the past but want to try something new and more versatile Thank you for any assistance you (or any of your followers) can give me. I very much appreciate any help I can get 😁🙏

Just want to mention here that another channel ran a 3 month lightfastness test, and most of the red and pink colors from Arteza are not nearly as lightfast as they state on their packaging, as well as one of their yellows and mixed greens. So if the lightfastness is a concern, this is important information to know! (Which makes me sad, because I really like their color selection!)
@sandraruberto8806
@sandraruberto8806 5 жыл бұрын
omg really? thank you so much for sharing this useful information! Can you tell me the name of the channel who did the test? I would love to check the video's out! Since I couldn't find the lightfast rating on Arteza website, I wasn't 100% sure about their lightfastness, I was already worried that maybe I was completely wrong and I delivered wrong informations in the video, but then my guess was right that they don't have the highest lightfastness compared to professional high quality paint. But exactly if lightfastness is a concern, better to be aware. But otherwise for practice and as a starter set to try gouache, they're still great! It also makes me sad because I also like their color selection and they're so easy and enjoyable to use!!

@@sandraruberto8806 No worries! I've been agonizing over whether I should give these a try, or just go straight for a smaller set of Holbein gouache, and then I stumbled over this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKdplNuTntazaHU.html My perspective, as someone diving back into gouache after an 11 year break, is that if I happen to do a beautiful piece that I want to hang up, I don't want to worry about it fading. So if you're just scanning work, I don't think it will be a problem to use Arteza. Or if it's just going in a sketchbook for practice, I don't think it's a problem to use Arteza. In fact, I plan to use it for initial sketchbook studies and thumbnails. But for final work, I would definitely stick to one of the professional brands like Holbein, Schmincke, M. Graham, Winsor and Newton, Daler Rowney Designers, or Royal Talens Extra Fine.

This was so interesting! Thank you so much for such a thorough review! I think I'll try the Arteza and also keep saving up to try a few of the M Graham colors as well, eventually. But it sounds like I'll be able to do a lot of relevant learning with the Arteza colors and formula! :)

Thank you Christina! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I really think Arteza is a great option as a starter set, you get a nice wide selection of colors and decent quality paint for an affordable price, I'm sure you will have a better experience with gouache this time! and you will be able to practice well with gouache! Despite that Arteza paint tends to dry pretty fast (which it's a pity so just keep that in mind when you mix colors), I really enjoyed using Arteza gouache and I really mean it! Of course Arteza gouache is not as high quality as M Graham, you probably will have the best experience with M Graham gouache, but at the same time M Graham is more expensive than Arteza. So Arteza is a good option to start with gouache and eventually, if you enjoy using gouache as a medium, you can always replace the colors you like the most with M Graham gouache ;)

@@sandraruberto8806 I'm watching earlier of your videos I can tell the high quality professional paint gouache looks much higher pigment and more liquid like and rich the paper seems to absorb pigment more evenly. Like butter versus olive oil. The arteza is nice but sticks thick to the brush. Thank you for sharing. I'm curious to make the move into professional gouache paints next.
@sandraruberto8806

Yes exactly Arteza quality's is nice but not as high quality as some professional gouache brands, like for example Schmincke Horadam gouache, I would say also Winsor & Newton and probably also M.graham gouache which I haven't tried it yet but I heard great things about M.graham gouache! They are some of the best gouache quality for professional artists, but with Arteza you get good quality paint for an affordable price, which it's nice :) Each gouache paint is different depending on brand but among Arteza, Winsor and Newton, Schincke, Royal Talens that I tried so far, they're all different for certain aspects but they're good quality I have an enjoyable experience using all of them! So it really depends on the purpose you use gouache and choose the brand that fits better the way you work ^^ Thank you too for sharing your experience with Arteza! it's always interesting to know other people experiences about gouache! :D

OH NO! At 3:06 when you showed the lightfast rating stars I had not realized that this system was based on 5 stars. When I first saw the paints I assumed the 3 stars meant totally lightfast, and 1 was fugitive. I had not realized the scale goes higher. The pigment ingredient color codes seem pretty good for most of them, I'll have to swatch them for a lightfast test in the sun to find out for sure. I will say though that the price point for these paints is great. I can see them being useful for works you plan to make prints from and sell the original with a note reminding buyers not to store the piece in direct light from a window. Thank you so much for this thorough review :)

To be honest I'm not 100% sure about Arteza litghfastenss since I couldn't find their lightfast rating on their website...! usually the lightfastness of most brands goes from 1 to 5 stars such as Winsor & Newton or Schmincke gouache, but for example Royal Talens goes from 0 to 3 +. And again I'm not sure if 'plus' or 'star' symbols makes a difference, so I simply made my assumption based on other gouache brands! But either way I think Arteza lightfastness is not that bad and to be too concerned about, as long as you don't place your artworks to direct sunlight (same thing if you use gouache from any brands) it should be fine! and exactly, I agree with you that the price point for these paints is great, they're a great option a starter set because you get see the beauty of gouache without any struggles when painting with them! So for practice or for works you plan to make prints Areza gouache are fine, but exactly just to keep in mind about their lightfastness that is unsure if you sell original works ;) Thank you for watching and commenting!

Kimberly Crick Art the rating on these paints have only 3 stars/+ not 5 but dosent Matter anyway its totally unrealistic . You can find some lightfast test on KZfaq and different colors are very fugitive. Especially pinks but overall is still a good Paint for the price a lot of colors are totally fine to use . Keep in mind that winsor and Newton designer gouche is like 10 - 20 € each tube instead you can buy the full set of 60 colors from arteza for 30+ € It cant be the same stuff.But its still a very good Paint for pratice , reproduction etc... opacity , smoothness and so on are Pretty similar to w&n they Just cant guarantee that the paint Will not fade in direct sunlight . If you put the drawing under a UV protected glass in the Wall inside home It Will last the same but For selling maybe better to use the more expensive brand. Overall is fine to have all these colors to do test and sketching or even Little painting .

That was an interesting video! I'm still pretty new to gouache but I've had similar experiences with the Arteza gouache. Especially interesting is that you think it dries too fast. I had the same impression, but since I only have the Arteza paints there was no way of knowing! I've been considering a stay wet palette to make working with the paints easier! Probably the way to go since I want to finish these paints before buying more expensive gouache paints!

@@kf9058 Ah, that's really good to know Karli. I hoped that the stay wet palette would improve things. I guess I just have to live with the problem until I run out of the colours and replace them one by one. I'm kinda starting to figure out water control with them now, but the dryness is one of the reason why I got so frustrated with gouache at the beginning.
@kf9058
@kf9058 5 жыл бұрын
Lilly Schwartz I also am getting used to the water ratio. It's so frustrating sometimes because I'll get it a couple times and then others I won't. Or I'll mix a color and run out and then I have a difficult time mixing the same color again lol. The drying times definitely makes it difficult like she mentioned in the video because you have to keep adding water then that messes up your water ratio haha! I do enjoy having a stay wet palette regardless though because I can travel with it. So that makes it handy :-) I haven't tried my m Graham gouache in it yet.
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 5 жыл бұрын
@@kf9058 I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes I get a painting where it's just smooth sailing with water ratio and then with others I'm fighting every step of the way. Gouache can be so frustrating and random sometimes! I think I might get a stay wet palette anyway since I've been meaning to try out acrylic gouache and I'm a really slow painter. Even my watercolours dry on me in the palette 😆 Oh and I don't even try to remix a colour twice with gouache, because it dries down differently anyway. In real life objects don't really have a single colour anyway, there are always variations from light bouncing around. Might as well just pretend it's intentional 😂

Lilly Schwartz ooooh girl you think regular gouache drives you nuts? Let me tell you about acrylic gouache 😂😂😂 I was SO excited to try out my Holbein and honestly I really dislike them at the moment. I thought they were okay originally but decided to get m Graham's primary colors just to see the difference with gouaches. You can definitely tell the difference but as I've been practicing more I went back to arteza and it's growing on me. Seeing the way you painted with them has helped a lot. Obviously the professional ones are alot better but I agree with you, if you're not selling your original paintings theyre great to practice with. And Have a great color selection. I too also dislike how quickly they dry in the palette. It's super frustrating. Anyways, I love your videos and art. ❤️

I've been looking forward to watching this video for a while but I wanted to make sure you had my full attention as I knew you'd get into the details! :D I've seen the arteza's around but I've never really known whether they were worth a go, it's hard when they look good value to know whether your getting a cheap good set or an expensive bad set but your review did a really good job stating what was good about them but the limitations to consider too :) It sounds like they are good for more thicker applications than thin/opaque so I think I'll pick up a set soon and maybe layer with watercolours if I want to do a wash? I've really been enjoying seeing your cards come together btw, how 's it been going? Do you reckon you'll have them up on etsy soon? :)

ahaha don't worry you have my full attention :D Definitely, you never know how bad or good cheap products actually are until you try them. The price doesn't always define the quality, you can get good quality paint for an affordable price, it really depends on the brand itself! Generally, I think you just have to keep in mind that cheaper products might not the best standard and they're cheaper for a reason, if you get what I mean xD Yeah Arteza have a good coverage and they perform well, I would say they're good to use both thin and thick! definitely you can use them with watercolours too! If you're going to buy the (knowing that you're an illustrator like me :)) just be aware of the lightfastness, after I uploaded this video I'm still using Arteza gouache, they might not be as pigmented and high quality as the other brands I use but despite that they're still good! I hope you will like them as much as I do :) My cards are going well :D Yesterday I finally ordered them! I still have few things to buy before they will be ready on my shop, not sure exactly when though. Between the 8th and 11th March there is a fair that takes places each year in my town and I will have a stand selling my art! So I'm also getting ready for that, so probably I'm going to sell the cards at the fair first and then add all my new creations on my shop! :D What about you? how is it going for your portfolio and projects? ^^
@JasmineToddIllustration
@JasmineToddIllustration 5 жыл бұрын
@@sandraruberto8806 Sound's like they might be best for scans/prints rather than originals then :D It's like you say you get what you pay for, and the quality varies within that parameter. Either way it's always good to hear an actual artist's view's on a product rather than just relying on the reviews online, you gave a lot of information I know I wanted to hear especially when it came to the paper. It's really hard to find good paper without buying it first and seeing how it performs so I really appreciated that you tested it out :) Well done on completing the cards!! I'm really excited to see how they turn out! The fair sounds like a lot of fun too, you'll have to take lots of photo's of your shop and set-up :D You sound like your firing on all 4 cylinders atm I really hope that it all goes well as I'm sure it will! :) Portfolio and projects are going alright, I've had a few commissions which has been a new (but nice) challenge! I've always been hesitant to take them on but they've gone well so I might try and find a way of adding them to the etsy as custom listings? Not really sure how but I'll try and find a way :D With these new paints though I might just have to start a new gouache painted series instead haha! :P

I'm not sure about either of them but I been using Royal and Langnickle and a white from M.Graham. getting a better quality white will totally upgrade the entire set

I was asking myself the same question! during these days I was comparing Royal Talens and Arteza gouache but it's actually difficult! I honestly enjoy them equally, although to me…I think the quality of Royal talens gouache is still a bit better than Arteza. Although Arteza gouache is very easy and enjoyable to use, I personally find the formula and paint consistency of RT a bit better in quality than Arteza. Since on Arteza website I couldn't find the lightfast rating, I'm not sure how the colors will last over a long period of time. So RT is more suitable for a professional use and if you care about lightfastness, then RT would be a safer choice. I really like the colors selection of Arteza though, in fact in terms of pigment, I prefer some Arteza colors over some RT colors! I also feel like that if you buy the 24 colors set of Arteza is still cheaper than getting a small set or 24 individual colors of RT gouache. Both of them would be a good purchase! so I think it all depends on what you’re going to do. If you want to try gouache and do practice, then Arteza would be the perfect choice! you get a nice selection of colors too!But if you want to use gouache more professionally, like selling originals, then I would recommend RT. It’s very difficult to make a comparison between brands, but I hope this helps! :)

So I guess I just suck at Gouache, because Arteza is exactly what I bought to try Gouache T_T

Is it your first time using gouache? because don't worry when I first used gouache I also was bad at it! when you first try any new medium it takes a little bit of time and practice to get familiar with it :)

I'm worried about lightfastness with this brand. I've seen a review showing that they aren't as lightfast as they claim which makes me concerned about the brand itself. Aside from this property, if I currently use W&N gouache, do you think these would just be disappointing or good to add to the collection?

You have to be careful with most gouache, especially when it says "designers" gouache, as the colors are made to be complete options for vibrancy and not stable for lightfastness. I have the basic primary Winsor and Newton set and was shocked that the primary magenta in this set was not lightfast, so all the colors I mixed faded :( I had to go look at each tube's ingredient list to find out which pigments were the most stable.

Perhaps try a smaller tube of a color that you will use, and only buy more if you decide it's up to your standards. Better than investing in an entire set.

Thank you Kimberly and P3 for your suggestions. Perhaps I'll try a few open stock from Holbein and MG instead of the Arteza set, and I'll have to be more careful with W&N now (or any brand) for sure...I didn't realize that my primary red was only a "B" for permanence. How awful that your magenta mixes faded!

I'm also a bit unsure about the lightfastness of Arteza gouache since I couldn't find their lightfastness rating on the website. Usually the lightfastness from most brands goes from 1 to 5 stars, but for example Royal talens lightfastness goes from 0 to 3 +. Arteza lightfastness might be as Royal talens which 3+ is the best, but I can't say for sure so I made my assumption based on other gouache brands. But either way, I think as long as you don't expose your paintings to direct sunlight, Arteza gouache colors should have a rather good permanence. I use W&N gouache and enjoy them a lot! but if lightfastness is important to you, then maybe I would suggest you to get the colors with the highest lightfastenss so you're sure they're permanent for artist's use! and as @P3rformula suggested, I also would recommend you to get a small tube of a color you will use, so you can see if you like W&N gouache or not! which by the way on W&N website you can find all the informations you need about their gouache colors! And if lightfastness is a concern for you, probably if I were you, I wouldn't risk on buying Arteza gouache since we're not 100% sure about their resistant to light exposure. I think Arteza is a great option as a starter set for who want to try gouache, but if you want to sell original gouache artworks, then W&N would be a safer choice, in my opinion at least! @Kimberly Crick Art wow I didn't know the magenta of W&N wasn't lightfast! I don't have magenta but I have different colors with different lightfast rating, but so far I haven't experienced color fading, maybe because I keep my originals in a dark place, but I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to you :( thank your for sharing your experience!
