The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

Very little deterred Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh, who, often on horseback, traveled the world, killed tigers, and became what one reporter called, “The most remarkable man who has ever occupied a seat in the House of Commons." His life was a testament to the indomitable human spirit, a life that deserves to be remembered.

My favorite part of this is how such a disabled person had the insight and charity to have compassion on those suffering during the Irish famine, when so many able bodied persons of means turned away because it wasn't their problem.

Indeed all that was needed was compassion from the British government and Irish land owners/ landlords, and the effects of the 1846 to 1848 Irish famine could of been drastically reduced. Sigh!

Not the same but my brother who now has gone on the journey we all will take some day, was from a small child, wheelchair bound from muscular dystrophy. Not once did I hear him complain about his condition. And no matter how bad my day was, his being worse, not once did he point out his suffering. A man of great fortitude, perseverance and humility. @@billd.6847 harsh discipline for sure, different time and era. He was an indulged adolescent and pushing victorian societal taboos and " bringing the family into disrepute". His mother banished him but never cut him off financially till later on when he was in India. Did he fall apart? No he adapted made his own money and still thrived. If his older brothers hadn't of died , would he had ever returned to Ireland? A woman placed an ad in the personals for; "A man who would not beat her, would not walk out on her, and provide her with sexual gratification". The next day her doorbell rang and when she opened it saw a man with no arms or legs. "I'm here in answer to your personal ad", he said, "I have neither arms to beat you nor legs to walk out on you". "And what of the third requirement?" she asked. "How do you think I rang your door bell." he replied.

fortunately society's outlook on such things has changed, much for the better. But sadly, many today who do have the means AND the ability fail to accomplish much in life. Inspirational, humbling story of not letting the impossible stand in your way! Kavanaugh was lucky to be born into a family with wealth and influence. Had he been born poor in Ireland in the early 19th century, we would probably not have survived But still. it makes you think of yourself as rich and remarkable for having arns and legs. If Kavanaugh could do all that, with no arms and no legs - then you or I can do whatever we set our minds to! No matter what stands in our way. Thanks for a remarkable and uplifting story, Lance. A tale about a little, but great man. It is as Napoleon said: "You don't have to be big man to make a big difference!"

This brings to mind a lovely young lady of my acquaintance who was able to accomplish a great deal despite being born without limbs; she died 10 years ago this month at a young age, but is fondly remembered. I'm also reminded of an apocryphal story about a man who was born as only a head; he survived in that condition for some years, but somehow managed to eventually grow arms and legs, and even learned to walk. Unfortunately, while crossing the street one day, he was run over and killed. The moral of the story is: Quit while you're a head.
