Location: Pietrasanta, Italy. Marble & Art Workshops. This is an out-take from the docu story "Through The Eyes Of The Sculptor" on PBS. The director is asked by many..Why do these master artists / artigiani where the funny paper hat? So she thought she'd show you. Notice when they are sawing to rough out a female sculpture the dust shoots straight in their faces and they are not concerned. The marble dust blows into their faces they walk into it. The hats stay fixed on their heads. They to not blink - they do not wipe it away. Marble is 99% calcium carbonate. It is good for the skin and makes it soft. It does not hurt by breathing it in. When she shot them making the paper hat she first prepared. Notice they let her feel their soft skin and rubbed dust on face. The paper hats are a tradition. They were made years ago by the masons to keep the dust from falling into their eyes while working.
