Today I am going to show you how to swap out the idler arm on the Artillery Sidewinder X1 extruder idler arm with an all metal one. The whole reason for doing this is because the stock idler arm is poorly molded and cracks very easily.

For anyone who tries this and the gears stop moving. MAKE SURE the bearing from the first idler arm is removed! Otherwise when you tighten the side plate it will squeeze the small gear and cause it to get caught and stop moving.

Thanks for the hints on the cables and for your help. I just got my second X1 and the arm was broken, in 2 places, when I opened the box. Ordered replacement part, Amazon, and had it the next day. Now to put the rest of the machine together and see what else might be wrong. Yes, I am having them, China, send another arm and also have a 2nd metal arm kit coming too.

Not all the bolts holding the hot-end together are the same length SO if you're taking the bolts out be careful of which bolt went where. My OEM idler broke and (because of COVID-19?) all replacements are 'out of stock' and had to order the one you recommended from Ali Express. But 45-60 day delivery from China was NOT GONNA keep me down. I found a Titan idler from a place in Staten Island that was 'almost' the same. Spent 2 days drilling, filing, and gluing to get it to work. Can't wait for the aluminum one so this is a non-issue from now on.

Doesn’t it wiggle left right like that? I had to add a washer. Also my alu arm had a flat bearing instead of a hollow one. I took one from a broken arm instead, does the trick. But then again, I’ve been battling with this X1 for weeks and barely feel it runs now. Gl!!

I just left the flat bearing because I noticed the filament doesn’t seem to want to run down the middle of the bearing with the new arm. Maybe the original bearing you switched in is causing some resistance? Unrelated: does the ptfe tube fit snugly in your new arm? I might have to hot glue mine because it sits pretty loose in the hole

You did one fail, that i also did. I am still trying to get my x1 ready to work. So, you removed the old idler Arm, but you missed the bearing of the old idler. So it is still on the rod of the Motor. The New idler brings his new bearing, so its double. I also did and was not able to get the New one smooth back in place. The Motor was blocked and so on. Removing the old bearing is hard shit work. Now my idler Arm is touching the wheel. It is a mess.

If you order the version off amazon it comes with a shorter spring which is too short to work in the sidewinder x1 - if you simply use the old spring then it works fine. (Or at least that's what happened with the part I ordered - yours could be just fine)

@RiposteThis

When I'm re-tightening the screws, the gear that turns to pull the filament through binds up, it wont turn. Does the shorter screw go in the bottom right hole? How tight do they need to be? It seems like the bottom right one only catches by a couple threads before it's too tight.

@@ianm523 so my main problem was at first, the bearing from the plastic idler stays on the post, so when I put on the new one I didn't see that. And then I also have a problem with the bearing falling out of the metal one because there is a bit of a gap, so I put a small crush washer in there to space it out from the gearing thing.

I'm not sure if this is related but I had to replace the all-in-one extruder on my X1 and it seems to be leaning to the right and out of alignment on first use or not in the right spot going forward and back. So now the filament gets pulled behind the intake and back towards the arm. I was curious if anyone had the same issue or if I'm supposed to do something when replacing it.

The bearing that presses against the filament is shaped differently on the new arm you installed versus the original arm u removed. there's no controversy about this, just fan boys that will jump to defend their favorite brand or whatever. they just don't get that we want the company to change crappy parts so everyone can have a better product. instead they will try to blame it on you and say you shouldn't touch the arm but to change filament using the touch screen, yeah...

Add a bead of thermal paste (any cheap ones used for CPU heat sinks) between the heat sink and the extruder's plate.

I don't really understand why. The extruder is plastic so it is a horrible heat conductor if they were trying to make it a heatsink.

I did this upgrade after watching your video but now I'm having an issue with getting it to pull filament. I had to loosen up the screws on the backplate, specifically the ones over the big gear and the pressure knob aka the top 2 just to get it to pull filament. The problem is that the only way it pulls filament is if the screws are so loose that the one over the gear falls out mid-print. I tested it by loosening the screws and then using the load filament feature in order to get the gears to rotate and pull in the filament. I adjusted the two top screws and the pressure knob while it was going so I could see how tight I could make them without the gear getting stuck, but it's no use. The screw over the gear is so loose that it always falls out mid-print. Please help.

@IlJokerTheStranj
@IlJokerTheStranj 4 жыл бұрын
@@blackjacko Having the same exact issue. I do not know what to do. The only way I can get the gear to pull filament is to keep the screw that holds it in loose. But I have to keep it so loose that the screw just ends up falling out mid prints, otherwise the gear is stuck. I had tried tightening it while the extruder is extruding to see what the tightest I could make it was before it stopped the gear. I did this adjustment with both screws and the pressure knob on the back, but it's no use. The screws have to remain loose just to get the gear to rotate. Is this an issue specific to the 2020 version. I just got this printer 8 days ago.
