absolutely what I was looking for as I have a similar setup in my house with a Worcester combi boiler plus a hot water tank and a WIRED thermostat. So now I know I need to decommission the old WIRED thermostat and use the Tado WIRELESS one, and also install the TADO WIRELESS receiver to replace my Drayton controller ‘Lifestyle LP822’ that controls the hot water tank temp and central heating system temp. Thank you!

Great video. Few points I’ve had the Tado system installed for 2 years now. I have thermostat in hallway and radiator Tado trv on all radiators. In lounge is only room with 2 radiators and both have a Tado smart trv. I also have Tado Air con controllers in 2 rooms and have inter-grated Tado with HomeKit. Batteries in trv last well over 1 year, Tado email you and all tells you when going flat so you get plenty of time to change them. Just 2 batteries required. If you have 2 trv in same room they auto sync together so when you adjust one radiator both adjust. If you have a Tado trv in same room as a wall thermostat they sync so again when adjust temp on wall mounted stat the radiator will adjust. System has protection for boiler in place to stop boiler turning on and off to quickly with a delay built in. App allows you to set schedules for each room almost infinite on off times allowed. Geo fence means you can have it auto turn off when leave or arrive home. Open windows turn off system - you set for how long. You can by wall mounted controls that can control air conditioning units that also seamlessly sync with your heating. Tado fully works with Apple HomeKit so you can ask Siri to turn on off rooms even increase or decrease temps. Siri can even control your air con. You can set automations with HomeKit that control Tado. I’ve never had a problem with Tado working with HomeKit. Tado will auto monitor your boiler and detect any faults or performance issues. The app has lots of features like outside and indoor air quality, humidity and more. You can get reports on energy consumption and even how your consumption compares to other users in your areas. I’ve saved around £150 per year with this system. If consider getting Tado you should definitely get the Radiator trvs installed along side the starter kit for maximum benefit and control. Some features require an annual subscription of £25 aprox which is well worth it. The app is excellent and easy to use. Multiple users can download the app and use the same system eg other household members. When installing you can select non professional and the app will ask you some simple questions eg boiler make and thermostat make. You then take a picture of your boiler on the app and then the app will give you personalised installation instructions for your system with step by step pictures. Adding to the system later on is easy and the technical support if needed is their for you. Everything is good quality and easy to instal. I’ve previously had the Nest thermostat but the features Tado offer and app function is far superior.

I have a tado system and so does my mum. The best part about it is the fact you can change the trvs giving you room control. The batteries don’t always last 12 months for me maybe 10 months. Also the temperature at the trv is not always indicative of the rest of the room. However, this can be offset or you can get a separate thermostat to place in the middle of the room, although this does add additional cost. Sometimes the trvs don’t completely close off the radiator so you might get some heating coming through on some radiators but it is less than you would without it. I wouldn’t change the system for anything else but it’s not quite perfect yet.

I have the Tado system installed and it does save a fortune in Gas used. However I have not found any purpose for the room sensor. It is just a digital readout. The thermostatic valves are your room sensor. I would also point out that if you are planning to install thermostat rad controllers, it is important to leave one or two radiators open. I use the towel rails as the open circuits. This prevents the system closing off the flow around the primary heating circuit and burning out the circulating pump.
@leosedf

A differential pressure valve will save you from having a radiator open all time and will save you more money. You can also specify which sensor you want to use for the room, either the trv or the wireless sensor.

Tado recommend Panasonic eneloop rechargeable batteries. These have been found not to give a false battery low alarm that some other rechargeables have been known to do. I did read that the latest version of the trv had overcome that flaw but I haven't seen that in person to verify.

This video is a perfect example of why the Tado system is not as straightforward to either buy or install compared to the Drayton Wiser system. It looks modern and slick, but so messy trying to work out what you need to buy and so many people have been caught out buying the wrong kit like yourselves. Even the website doesn't help you out any better. I was originally going to buy the Tado system, but after getting confused about what is the right kit to buy and reading about so many people having connection issues in larger houses with the TRVs, I went for the Drayton Wiser system. So much simpler to buy and install (Combi kit, HW + 1 CH Zone, or HW + 2 CH zones), no internet bridge needed and new hub simply clicks onto the existing std wiring harness of the old programmer saving the need for any re-wiring. Wired room thermostat needs to be bridged at either the thermostat end or at the wiring centre end (after removing or disconnecting the thermostat wiring). Any connection issues can be resolved by adding the smart plugs to extend the mesh network to the farther points of your property, but I didn't need this. Also the smart radiator valves are where the cost mounts up and Tado's are more expensive than Wiser's. Think it would be really useful to you you produce a video comparing the two systems now that you have installed both systems now to see how they compare for installation and daily use.

I have the entire tado devices controling heat. But the best part is that it can control my heating via BUS connection. So it can request ex. 20% heating and stop from overshooting temps. Really amazing product. Only issue is the smart open window feature sucks. If a open window is detected it starts heating after a certain period of time. NOT when you close the window, worst part is that you can not use a window sensor to ensure heating does not start until you close the window.

There’s also a different version for boilers with existing wireless thermostats too .. not just for systems with cyclinders. As well as the thermostat, that kit comes with a wireless receiver that is wired into the boiler. The thermostat can then be placed wherever you want, wire free. If you have a Hive or a Nest you’ll know what I mean.

Ian I came across this discussion. Ideally the room thermostat should be located in a cool room, usually the last room to warm up. That way the other rooms will be warm enough, (but not overheated because of their TRV’s) before the room thermostat switches the entire heating system off. Locate it elsewhere and it will turn off all of the heating before the rest of the house is warm enough. The room thermostat should be in a room that is not effected by other sources of heat such as an open fire, cooking equipment, or sunlight etc. It should not be near a radiator, hidden in a corner or behind furniture. The radiator in the room with the thermostat installed should not have a TRV fitted. Otherwise the TRV may interfere with the correct operation of the room thermostat. Based on the above, the hall may often be the most suitable location. A thermostat located in the hall, should be set so that the hall doesn't heat up too quickly. For example a thermostat in the hall could be set to 19 C and because it is the last room to warm up, the bedrooms TRV's will start to shut the bedroom rads down at 18 C, the lounge & dining room will get to 21 C and the kitchen 19 C, all before the Hall reaches 19 C and shuts the entire heating system down. The issue then is if, say the lounge TRVs demand heating, and the thermostat in the hall has shut the system down, what happens next?
@jsouto77
@jsouto77 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct for most part but the thermostat in the hallway (coldest part) wants to be set the temperature you want ie. 20-21 C. Being the the is the coldest part, it will allow the warmer rooms to reach temperature before it shuts off. You then spend some time adjusting TRV's (if manual) as to what temperatures you want in those rooms. As for your last question, this system can be setup so that each thermostat can call for heat hence overriding each other including the main one.

Oh dear, Jordan. I dont think you knew these at all. First of all, there are only two types of starter kit. One is wired if you have an existing wired thermostat (like on this installation) and the other is a wireless if you dont have an existing wired thermostat or want to change placement hence nothing to do with the type of boiler. Also hence you had the correct one to start with just bridge upstairs (switch to always on). If you wanted to control the hot water from within Tado, then you could of just bought the extension as an add-on but do bare in mind that this is not needed for combi boilers since the demand is controlled by the tap. Also in this instance where you have a hot water tank, the recommendation is to always leave it on for efficiency and the only time you would probably want to turn it off would be if you left the house unoccupied for very long periods ie. weeks.

Jordan: Can I use the tado wifi radiator valves without any tado smart wall temperature sensors or boiler controller. I already have a wifi boiler programmer accessible because my boiler is in the loft? A big plus for me would be the ability to individually schedule on and off time for each individual radiator, naturally my existing boiler timer would be set to 'constantly on' at a convenient temperature i.e. as it is now.

As a tado user things to be aware of: a) 10 room/25 device limit - not great for larger houses b) the TRVs seem to massively overread when installed vertically as they are too close to the radiator. You can adjust with a temperature offset but then they underread when heating is off. They really need to release an inexpensive wireless thermostat to counter this (or better programming to identify the overread when on). The smart wireless thermostats at ~£60 is ridiculous for a temperature sensor. c) You seemed to install the wireless sensor and the TRV as two separate bedroom 1s? You can add them both in the same room and set the wireless sensor as the room controller. Generally a bit of a flawed system unfortunately as has a lot of promise.
@hmallett

Agree with your second point 100%. I have one TRV horizontal and the rest vertical. The vertical ones open and close all the time. The horizontal one does a better job of regulating the room temperature.

Had the Tado smart TRV system for a number of years now, and while it's quite a good idea, I've found the implementation to be a bit buggy and more annoyingly the rad valves don't mesh + the reciever unit range is very limited (at least in a 30s brick built property) and there is no mechanism to add an additional receiver. When a TRV drops off the network and is still calling for heat, the boiler continues to run and waste gas (usually through the night!) - because it can no longer tell the current temp or if heat it still required - but due to the limited radio implementation there is no way to resolve the issue. All tado suggest is to move the reciever somewhere central (which is not necessarily practical since it needs to be wired to the router and have a usb power supply!). Battery life is also not great in my experience. Also had difficulty getting adaptors to hold the TRVs securely to the rads, with them sometimes popping off the radiators that don't have threaded valves. I'd probably look at another system if I had the choice again - hive have smart valves now. (Although I have no idea if that would be any better). Tado need to add an ability for the TRVs to mesh to range extend, improve the range of the gateway or support adding repeater gateways. Until then the system will never be reliable in all properties.

Normally the CH is configured with one none thermostatic valve. This means if the thermostat calls for heat at least one rad is open. With the tado you can have all rads on thermostatic valves. Tado will manage the interlocking making sure at least one rad is open before calling for heat (basically like a UFH manifold).

Nice job. Not too tough an install, as long as you get the old manual thermostat wiring the normally open and common bridged. So one question: Why have a room thermostat, if the radiators have thermostats? Room thermostats seem redundant, if all radiators are independent.
@inthapipeline
@inthapipeline 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve had the Tado system for around two years. Technically, yes, the room thermostats are essentially redundant. However, they can and do serve some purpose; because the smart valves contain the thermostats AT the radiators, they often detect the temperature as higher than it is in the rest of the room. This can be accounted for in the app by setting a temperature offset. But a better way is to have a thermostat, head/body height, with the valves linked to this. This way the temperature is more accurately measured. I’ve not bothered in most of my rooms but I did do this in my toddler’s bedroom with the thermostat placed quite low at around the height that he sleeps.

@rodgerq

With rooms with more than one rad, you add the Trvs to each rad then choose one in the app to be the measuring device for the room. Not ideal in a big room really but that's why they do the wireless tenp sensors as well. And yes, the system can control the temperature separately in each room that you have the Trvs fitted.

FYI you don’t need the wireless thermostat in a room if you’ve got the smart radiator valve as it had a thermostat built in
@anahatamelodeon
@anahatamelodeon 2 жыл бұрын
The trouble with TRVs on the radiator is that they don't measure the temperature of the room at the best place. They didn't make it clear what happens when you have both, but hopefully if there's a wireless sensor in the room that takes precedence, and if there isn't, the radiator's own TRV takes control.

Hi, I was going to install the Tado smart thermostat on my Vaillant Ecotec 831 boiler however I spoke with an engineer who said while it can be done the Ecotec boilers it will not run as efficiently as they would using their own controllers. This is due to vaillant having their own Ebus chip and third party controllers can only control the boiler to be on or off rather than gradual heat control, this wasn't always the case with the previos vr65 which I think were opentherm but since the vr66 this seems to not work aswell with third party. Because of this I decided to only purchase the Tado radiator thermostats which come with the bridge in order to run those as an extra while keeping my Vaillant controller. Please can you or anyone else confirm this to be true?
@michealkarumba7362
@michealkarumba7362 Жыл бұрын
Yes that is correct. Vaillant use their own communication language call eBus. But Vaillant have their own controller which is very good. You'd need the vSmart controller. It also uses local weather station data to anticipate changes in heat requirements. More effective if you happen to be close to your local weather station. A third party controller such as the Tado will still work, its just that it will act as an on/off switch rather than modulate the boiler output. It's a shame Vaillant don't support opentherm to give more options, but the Ecotec's are great boilers and the vSmart is a great controller

Tado is good but from an installer perspective it's limited on property size. Tend to find the actuators get stuck or in summer have jammed the pins down (no different than honeywell or other "smart TRVs" in that regard) which normally ends up with a plumbing call out. The TRV's aren't essential though and provide limited benefit over a traditional wax stat TRV considering most will be set for life to their respective use case and the over all smart control governing the house will have more impact on bills. As a side note that open vented combination cylinder (expansion and fill tank directly above hot water cylinder in the same unit) being changed out to a pressurized system would likely save equal or more energy depending on usage.

The efficiency of the system is entirely capped by how low your boiler can modulate. If a single smart TRV calls for heat it's unlikely to be enough demand for your boiler to not cycle and obviously nothing is changing the flow temperature of the system.
@rodgerq
@rodgerq Жыл бұрын
Tado can communicate in all the main digital languages like opentherm etc, it just requires wiring into the boiler differently than just your standard on-off switched live wiring. There's a pro installer instruction manual on their website explaining the wiring for the main boiler manufacturers and how to setup the thermostat in order for it to be able to modulate the boiler. That's what makes tado stand out from the other smart thermostat systems.

Lee can't be that cosy in the front room because he has stairs in there which will lead to heat going upstairs! Also I've found out turning off radiators in unused rooms the boiler still uses the same amount of energy if it's heating 1 radiator or 10 radiators. It makes sense in a way however yes the boiler will come on and switch off accordingly a bit quicker than normal depending on 1 fact: don't turn off the radiator where the thermostat is else it will think everywhere is cold. Another good tip is to close all your doors where the thermostat is located so the reading will reach what you set it at rather than heating the whole house/flat

@@totalsnooker TRV's don't tend to stick through lack of use, more often than not it's due to people leaving them set down in summer and the pins jamming. Sadly something still not passed on to most end users. There's also downsides to Tado/Honeywell and other smart stats being the actuators are equally able to fail due to loss of signal, the pins in the valve body jamming, batteries depending on use case scenario (often the first 6 months/winter) when people have them new and are endlessly playing with them. Education is far more impactful than replacing mechanical controls with smart tech.

@richardpawlowski4540 2 жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstand how these radiator valves work. Unlike mechanical TRVs which can only respond to changes in temperature opening and closing as required but they cannot switch the heating on, that requires you to override any programming. These valves have heating on demand, on our similar Hive system I only need to tell Alexa to heat up the room I am using and the system will simply heat that room that is a real boon for those working from home perhaps spending most of the day in a home office no wasted heat and a saving on the gas bill.
@barrieshepherd7694
@barrieshepherd7694 2 жыл бұрын
@@richardpawlowski4540 It's a moot point as to whether the saving on gas is real or imaginary. If you arrange a typical UK heating system so that a single radiator can override a timer control and 'demand' heat the system still has to heat up the whole heating distribution system and that will cause other radiators to draw heat unless the system has closed them down. You are still heating all the feed pipes in the system. Extrapolate this and you get to a situation where your office is cosy, the pipe work is cosy but the rest of the house has cooled to chilly - then when you want to go cook dinner or watch TV you have to add a lot of heat to get those rooms up to temperature. What Chris (above) was proposing was run the heating to keep the whole house 'temperate' (although I disagree with his 21C I'd go for 17/18) and let normal thermostatic valves adjust/balance each room temperature to your desired offset (e.g. cooler in bedrooms warmer in bathrooms). Then you can increase the single stat to bring the temperature up /down as you wish - if you need you can go turn off individual rooms. While this does not have the street cred of IOT turning things on and off from afar it is a lot cheaper than filling the house with IOT controls and controlling your heating and hot water via some external server. As I started, it is a moot point as various 'experts' subscribe to each view point - one school of thought adds that having heating completely off causes condensation which then requires even more energy to raise temperatures. I suspect that, in a final analysis, the construction of the property, the way the heating is installed and the level of insulation all make the equations complex hence the lack of an absolute recommendations. I run my heating for comfort, not absolute degrees - on a twice per day timer, with the general stat at 18C and rad stats set for the heat level I want in each room. If it suddenly gets chilly I just lift the general stat temperature and/or override the timer. I've looked at smart solutions but, for the size & layout of my 3 bed bungalow, I cannot see any benefit in 'investing' in IOT solutions - much as the geek in me wants to!. But each to his own:-)
@richardpawlowski4540
@richardpawlowski4540 2 жыл бұрын
Barrie I admit that some parts of the piping will have to get hot but I do not think to the extent you are saying. At night our system goes to anti frost setting I have often boosted the bedroom alone if I am doing some late night reading and with the exception of the bathroom which is the official bypass all other radiators stay cold and there is no heating in the pipe stubs to them. When a radiator valve is closed all the water in the pipe work from where it branches off the main pipes is not circulating so only heating by convection can occur which from my experience is very little. Back in the old days when most houses only had a back boiler and a hot water tank upstairs known as a gravity feed system the heat rising caused a circulation to heat the tank but at best you could perhaps hang a couple of radiators off such a system before you had to start pumping water around a system.
