I had a few hours this morning to help Barret on his deck project so we mounted the posts for the handrail. I think I am ready to give in and get some help from Paco on the decking which is next :)

Imagine a world where the internet do not limit the minds of the poeples. Imagine handrails that are different! Imagine you are not a sheep. Imagine that you have your own personality and there are no limits. Imagine a world where crappy treated 4x4's do not exist :) Imagine yourself building a deck and not walking lock step with pretty youtube influencers :) Now, you are prepared for life :)

I've had decks damaged due to water intrusion thru the nail and or screws thru the decking. Now I put a piece of butyl tape across the joist top to protect them. Has been working for me.

So I have been doing decks since 1983 , and we used to make the notch . Because the guy I was working with showed me that was the way he did it. And he was a great carpenter. But that does not mean that is the only way to do it. Im pretty sure You are not allowed to notch the post now . I always used carrage bolts with washers. I like what and how you did everything . The deck looks nice and the rim joist looks straight! . Nice job!!

I started in 1978 and have built them many ways and have settled on a few ways :) My methods to some degree the way materials have evolved. I noticed over the years that notching the posts works ok when you first build it but not so much after they have set in the sun for a few years and cracked and warped and split in half where it was notched from the use of the handrail. Also, if a better wood is used like Ipe or Cumaru which is more stable, you can get by better with notching. Thanks!

I used 6x6 posts and notched them. I like notching them. But you don't need to notch if you're using 4x4 post because it doesn't leave enough meat to carry the weight

I plan on using your post mounting on my low existing deck but would like to use a through -the-post 1/8" cable railing system but am concern about "throwing the railing outside the deck" as Trevor B. replied. Would you have experience, recommends or code advice?
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony 2 жыл бұрын
You could use a bottom and top rail in conjunction with your cable rails. I probably would not use this method if I were using cables only. Part of why this system works is that the 2x2's all come down and screw into the header joist/band/box sill and add strength. I am not confident the lateral capability of the rail would be satisfactory using cables only. You could mount the posts on the inside of the band/header joist and this would resist more outward lateral load. I usually add a bracket system to the posts if I am using cable rails.

Great job..do you not double band the outer rims?
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony 2 жыл бұрын
No need if the joists are sitting on a beam like these are and the band is not supporting any joists. If the joists were only connected to the band/rim joists only and it was supporting the joist between the posts, I would but this is why I like the beam underneath the joists. It gives a cantilever look and also simplifies the band. Thanks!

Hello, how thick of screws would you recommend for handrails like this? 3/8" 1/2" 5/8" ?

When you drilled holes for the lag bolts, did you drill all the way through or to a depth slightly shorter than the bolt? Thanks for a great video.
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony Жыл бұрын
We drilled just through the 4x4 so it threaded into the band of the floor framing. This was to keep the 4x4 from splitting which especially treated pine will do after the sun hits it.

Why no blocking between the joists?
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony Жыл бұрын
The way this deck is built, it is not needed. The combination of 2" x 10" at 16" o/c, the 5/4" decking and the cantilever on the ends that helps counter act the center moment, it's built like a tank already :) We use bridging (or blocking as you said) on subfloor systems for interior floors because we use sheet goods like advantech and it causes the floor to have more of a bounce than the 5/4" decking we used on the deck. Plus, I have been building them this way for 44 years and have had not troubles :)

Question.. Are you using lag bolts instead of Carriage bolts... I've had a bad experience with railing posts and lag bolts.
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony 2 жыл бұрын
If installed properly they work great. If you just try to drive them in without predrilling, they can split out the wood. But I started in 1978 and have used thousands of lag bolts. Code requires them in some cases.
@gr33dyglutton
@gr33dyglutton 4 жыл бұрын
The reason for notching the posts would be if you're putting your posts on the inside of the rim board. It brings the rail out, gaining deck space. Some people prefer to put the posts inside the framing for the cleaner look.

@kevinjones340

@@ArtisanTony does it really need an angle or is that just for “decor”? I have a small deck that I need to replace the rails and the guy who built the deck cut some corners back in 2007 and I wasn’t here when he did it and he used the footings as the rails also so this is my quick fix to replace the rails that we hate…. Thanks
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony Жыл бұрын
@@kevinjones340 No, you are correct is is only to ease the edge a little so it is personal preference. Sometimes it's better not to if you don't have enough room to run two bolts through.

Does ‘not‘ notching the posts throw the railing to the outside of the deck?

Nationwide the building code specs 1/2 diameter bolts through the guardrail posts, then fastened to a metal cleat. That plans for max side loading but most deck posts won't ever see that kind of load.
@ArtisanTony
@ArtisanTony 3 жыл бұрын
The building specs load requirements such as 200 lbs lateral load. This rail easily meets gode amd passed inspection.
