8 years since you've posted this.. and just as relevant, so much so that after watching NUMEROUS videos.. today is the day I get my deck with those inner posts and picture frame style border done just like you've done! The time you spent going over even the smallest things saves people time AND money! Thank you!

In my opinion these are the best deck videos on KZfaq right here folks. At least for us beginners and DIY’s that aren’t completely set in our ways and willing to learn a thing or two.

1. He is using galvanized hardware with pressure treated wood could be very bad. He did not state why it is ok or why it could be bad. 2. Ledgers are better sitting on the posts not bolted/lagged into the side. Ok not OMG. Edit: I still gave him a thumbs up for many other reasons.

We built our home 22 years ago, today I started taking the original decking down, found a few bad joist, mold and a little rotten wood so its all coming down. Total rebuild at todays prices. I say all of that to say this, I worked construction for decades, broke my back and started over at 40 years old. In my opinion, this guy demonstrates great quality work, he’s simply showing people how “HE” builds a deck, not how “everyone” should build a deck. TOP quality work. Awesome job.

Love all your videos Shannon! You always manage to point out something I did not know, be it from wiring or deck building. I had it wrong in the way you lay the deck boards down are Center of the growth up rather than down.I thought it was reverse of what you pointed out. This season I am building onto our existing deck, to expand it and step up to also expand to the above ground pool height, to pool we had installed half way through last summer. I am so glad you gave that tip. Thank you Shannon, keep them coming!

Woohoo, I made the thumbs up total go from 5.2k to 5.3k... Thanks so much for posting these vids Shannon. I have watched a dozen of them already and always learn so much for many my reno projects. In this video, the only things I'd add, and will add to my deck project, is a product called blue skin. It's a type of vinyl sticky tar like tape that has great weather protection and works great behind the ledger board and tops of joists. The ledger board is crucial because if not protected properly can rot the base of your house. I'd prefer to double or even triple protect that area with blue skin and the drip edging.
